The Descendants of Isaac Sr. Betts

Generation No. 1

1. ISAAC SR8 BETTS (BENJAMIN7, THOMAS 36, THOMAS 25, THOMAS 14, JOHN3 BETTES, ALEXANDER2, ROBERT1) was born March 15, 1784 in Wallace Nova Scotia, and died 1849 in Glenwood P.E.I notice of death in archives Ch'town P E I. He married JOICE OR MARTHA ?.

Notes for ISAAC SR BETTS:

Isaac was born in Wallace Nova Scotia son of Benjamin Betts and Elizabeth Cameron. In 1820 he moved his family to 9 Mile Creek lot 65 P.E.I .He leased a farm there in 1832 from Edmund Fanning's wife. A side note, there was a add in the local paper that offered a reward of 20 Shillings for the apprehension of the person who came into his field at night and cut the tail off his oxen. Then in approximately 1838 he sold the lease to his son Joseph and moved the rest of his family to West Point P.E.I. Were he settled in what is now called Glenwood His son Silas Leased a property in the area And Isaac Built a Sawmill Silas sold his property to Humphrey Gorrell in 1859 and bought 3 other properties near by. Isaac died in 1849 (His obit in the paper said he left a wife and 10 children). This is the only information we have of his children other than what we know personally and other descendants doing family history). Then Daniel D. Betts his son worked the mill until 1863 when he sold it to Amos Macwilliams, a ship builder from lot 7. Another descendant of Isaac still works one of the original farms in 2005.

A descendant of Isaac, Ralph Betts and now his daughter Kelly, stills runs a saw mill near by .

There is a story of how the old mill came to be on the Pierre Jacques river in P E I. The story goes that the Betts were heading to Quebec from either Wallace N S. or lot 65 P E I. when they were ship wreaked of Mossy point P E I. that's in Prince county near West point they had a mill for cutting lumber on board that they were going to operate in Quebec, it was decided that they would set it up on the river near by instead. the Betts mentioned in the story was Tilman Betts Jacob Betts and Tyrel Betts. I have only heard Tilman and Tyre Betts mentioned in our American ancestors. Jacob would be Isaac's brother I know that Isaac was the mill operator in 1841. This story was told to his family and others by Alexander Morrison.

Notes for JOICE OR MARTHA ?:

We do not know for sure if this was Isaac's wife's name. Larry Ford found a marriage certificate for a Jesse Betts in New Brunswick and he gave his father and mother's name as Isaac and Joyce from P.E.I. There was a Jessie Betts as witness at a wedding of Isaac's daughter Harriett to Jacob Pollard but that was a ladies spelling of the name Jesse the news paper may have got it wrong. Many of the female grandchildren had the name Martha and Joseph and Isaac had a 8 Ton sail boat named Martha. The Jessie at the wedding could have been Joseph's daughter.

In it Jesse gave his mother and father's name as Isaac and Joyce Betts of P.E.I on that application. There was also a Jessie Betts {ladies spelling} witness to the wedding of Isaac's daughter Harriett in 1847 The news paper could have misspelled the name. Notes for ELMER CORBET BETTS:

Elmer was one of the original members who started the O'Leary farmer's cooperative. He also collected the eggs from the farmers and delivered them to the CO-OP each week, he only had a grade 6 education but he could add figures in his head as fast as you could give them to him, this likely came from counting all those eggs. Elmer farmed using horses all his life. He treated the horses very good, he would walk behind them while doing all the plowing and harrowing. The horses could have pulled him easily because he used 3 horses a lot. When he was injured in a fall from a loaded sleigh in the winter of 1951 breaking his leg, my mother and I (His son Alburne) took over running the farm the best we could, I was 15 then and not really prepared to farm . By spring it became apparent my father's leg would be a long time healing, he actually ended up going to his daughter Muriel in Boston and the specialist made a walking brace that he used for over a year.

The first thing I did in the spring was make a riding cart to fit on the harrows so I would not have to walk behind the horses. By the time I was 17, I new I wasn't cut out to be a farmer. If we had a car and tractor I may have stayed. I decided to go to Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown and learn the brick laying trade. My father was a very good farmer, when I took over feeding the 100 hens they were laying over 90 eggs a day in a month they were down to 60. I just could not talk to them like my father could and he did talk to them, they would start make different sounds as soon as he entered the pen. In the 1920 to the 1940's our father would haul mud and shells from the bay and spread it on the land for fertilizer. He also got lobster bodies from the canning factory. It grew great crops if you didn't mind the smell. Our father was sixty when he got his first car, a few months later he and our mother drove from Digby Neck Nova Scotia to Sidney NS then to Prince Edward Island. I don't know how he made it. I always tried to drive when I was with him

David Betts on P E I

David could have been born in Miramichi N. B. while Benjamin was still fighting his suite against the States. The family finally settled in Wallace N.S. on a land grant. In 1820 David and Issac went to P.E.I. and David worked at different jobs. In 1829 David was working as a policeman and an article in the local paper informed people he was giving evidence in the trial of Toban and Doyle. (Case: Lamb Patrick and Pier) MURDER OF THE BLACKEST DYE. Later in life he is recorded in a diary of building a fireplace and chimney for his brother-in-law in Bedeque, P. E. I. In 1839 he bought a farm in St. Eleanors P. E. I. and sold it to his son William in 1855. There is a record of David been baptized in 1854 at the age of 73. His wife Susanna died in 1856 and is buried in St. John's cemetery in St Eleanors. It would appear David moved to Shediac after his wife died and is buried in the Church of England cemetery there.

David married Susanna Darby in 1823 their children were
