The Descendants of Phillips Callbeck, Ann Coffin, and Catherine Morris

Note:This file, as with all family files on the Register, is a work in progress. As such, there may be errors and omissions. Always use these files as a guide only, and check all information yourself. Phillips G-G-G Grandson, Lorne C. Callbeck was one of the Island's best known Historians, and penned many fine histories. I will not quote from his books, as they are still under copyright, but I highly recommend that you read them, whether interested only in the Callbeck family, or in P.E.I. History in general. His book, "My Island, My People" , and "An Island Refuge", Abegweit Branch, UEL Association, are excellent resources for information for this, one of the Island's most prominent families.

1. Phillips Callbeck born ___ 1743, Occupation: Attorney Gen., PEI., married (1) Anne Coffin, born ___ 1752, (daughter of Nathaniel Coffin Jr. and Elizabeth Barnes) died Oct 15 1826, Bath, Somerset, England., Interred: Abbey Church, Bath, Somerset, England., and fathered a child by Catharine Morris, of Halifax, who died Jan 25 1814. Phillips died Feb 28 1790, Charlottetown, PEI., Interred: Elm Avenue Cemetery, Charlottetown, PEI. Phillips was appointed Attorney-General of the Island of St. John in 1770. Later, in 1771, he was also appointed Surrogate-General of Probate, then in 1774, president of His Majesty's Council. In 1775, the Island capitol was pillaged by American Privateers, and Phillips, and Surveyor General Thomas Wright, along with the seal of Prince Edwards Island were carried off to General Washington's Headquarters. They were released, and both men, minus the seal, arrived home some months later. Phillips served as Commander for the St. John Volunteers in the Revolutionary War. See the Muster Roll, St. John Volunteers, 12 June, 1784. He held 20,000 acres in Lot 35, Bedford Bay, "from his Majesty for ever", according to this document.
