Descendants of Daniel Delaney, Sr and Unknown Wife

Descendants of Daniel Delaney, Sr

Of Lot 20

This document is a compilation of information gathered to date with the help of numerous relatives.

Special thanks must go to my sister Beverley Berney, Michael Meggison, Norm Delaney and other newly found cousins for their contributions. Some information included in the previous document has been edited in an effort to keep the size of this document to a minimum . Additional information is available upon request. As with all family trees, this is an evolving document and subject to errors and omissions.

Generation No. 1

1. Daniel2 Delaney, Sr (Unknown1) was born Abt. 1760 in probably Ireland, and died Abt. 1831 in probably Lot 20, PEI. He married <Unnamed> Abt. 1780. She was born Abt. 1760 in Ireland?, and died Bef. October 20, 1821 in presumably PEI.

Notes for Daniel Delaney, Sr:

Daniel and his family are the earliest documented Delaney's on PEI. They were recorded in Lot 20 in the 1798 Census of PEI. It is unknown exactly when Daniel may have arrived or where in Ireland he came from. His family has been somewhat of a mystery. Did Daniel and his wife arrive together or was she already a resident? Were any of the older children born elsewhere or were they all born on PEI?

1798 Census Lot 20, PEI

The census recorded Daniel Delaney as the head of a household of 8 individuals, 1 male & 1 female between 16 and 60 years of age (Daniel and presumably his unknown wife) and 3 males & 3 females less than age 16 years old (presumably his children). If Ann was older than 21 when she married, it's possible she could be the female in the 16-60 range and Daniel's wife is already deceased by 1798. This would then leave us with another unknown female under 16.

The other unaccounted for male and female under 16 have yet to be identified. They could be children of Daniel or possibly servants living with the family. There is no way of knowing.

Although not proven conclusively, it can be assumed from the information gathered, that Daniel was the father of John, Ann, Susanah & Daniel, Jr Delaney for the following reasons:

1) There is no other Delaney family recorded in PEI this early.

2) Susanah was specifically mentioned in Daniel, Sr's will as being his daughter.

3) Both William Layton Delaney and Catherine Delaney (John Delaney & Sarah Murphy's children) stated in the 1891 census that both their parents were born in PEI.

Dates of birth for Daniel and his unknown wife are strictly an approximation based on year of daughter Ann's first marriage. Assuming Ann was at least age 20 when she first married in 1803, her birthdate would be c1783. Assuming again, that Daniel and his wife were at least 20/21 when they married, their birth dates can be approximated in the c1760's time frame. Of the known children's names, Ann would appear to be the eldest.

Land conveyance - 3 November, 1803 in Lot 20, PEI - Penelope Bassett (Liber 15, folio 14)

Daniel leased 100 acres from Penelope Bassett, daughter and heir to the late Capt. Thomas Bassett, the owner of Lot 20. Daniel was able to sign his name and he signed the land lease as 'Daniel Dealeaney'.

The lease recorded him as of Lot 20, indicating he was already a resident (confirmed by 1798 census information).

The 100 acre lease was for 999 years at a rent of 10 pennies an acre/year increasing by 1 penny a year until the rate was 1 shilling (12 pennies). The rent could be paid either in cash or farm produce, at the discretion of the owner's agent.

The land was situated commencing at a stake fixed on the south side of Couzins (Cousins) Pond then running due south 83 ch 50 links, eastern boundary with Wm Young, then due east 12 ch, then due north to the said pond, then along the source of the pond.

The lease was signed only between Daniel and Penelope Bassett. Daniel's wife is not mentioned. She may have been deceased by this time.

Land conveyance - 9 August, 1816 in Lot 20, PEI - Robert William Cundall and Penelope his wife

(Liber 26, folio 105) Lease 128

Another lease is recorded dated August 9, 1816 and registered on September 22, 1819.

This lease is for 50 acres and was for only 200 years. The index to the leases recorded Daniel as Daniel senior and the land conveyance recorded him as Daniel Delaney, the elder.

A note attached to this lease indicated Daniel Delaney senior had already paid 6 pounds, 16 shillings, 7? pence for rent up to 1st July 1806 and that 19 pounds, 18 shillings, 9 pence was due 1st May 1820.

This 50 acre parcel was situated commencing at a stake on the south side of Cousins Pond, leading from the Gulf of St Lawrence to the Princetown Road in the west, boundary line of lands occupied by Charles Doyle the along said road westerly to (?) 6 ch due east and west then running due south by parallel lines so as to include an area of 50 acres, all houses, buildings, woods, etc.

Charles Doyle witnessed the signing of this lease.

It is not entirely certain whether this was a revision of the original 1803 lease or a new 50 acre parcel of land. Penelope Bassett had gotten married to Robert William Cundall and as women could not hold property if they were married, Robert had all the tenants sign new leases with him.

It's physical description/location appears somewhat different than the original 100 acres and records show this 50 acres passed out of the family some time later when Jacob Duggan eventually got the lease (date unknown at this time). The fact that Daniel assigned 50 acres to John Delaney and sold another 50 acres to Charles Doyle (see conveyances noted below), one could assume that this was another property that Daniel had been renting.

Land Conveyance - 20 October 1821 in Lot 20, PEI - Daniel/Donald Delaney, senior of New London and John Delaney of 'Nineland' Farmer (RG16 Liber 30. folio 183-184)

This is an interesting document as Daniel clearly indicated he was assigning the eastern half of his 100 acre farm to John Delaney containing 50 acres + with all buildings, woods, underwoods and water for the remainder of the 999 yr lease held by Daniel. John was to pay Daniel 2 pounds and 2 shillings a year for each and every year Daniel lives. The conveyance was registered Sept 6, 1823.

Land Conveyance - 3 November 1821 in Lot 20, PEI - Daniel/Donald Delaney, senior of New London and Charles Doyle of the same place Farmer (RG 16, Liber 33, folio 590)

Two weeks later, Daniel conveyed the western half of his farm containing 50 acres + and bounding John Delaney's farm, to Charles Doyle, his son-in-law. This conveyance was registered June 14, 1827. One of the witnesses to this conveyance was John Delaney.

Charles was to pay Daniel the sum of 20 pounds Halifax Currency, to be paid in installments of 5 pounds per year commencing the first of the year 1822 and to continue yearly until paid. If not all paid before Daniel dies, Charles is to see Daniel is decently buried and all that remains of the payments is to be used for the care of Charles and his family.

In both assignments, Daniel, Sr. was noted to be of New London, so he may have moved there.

Daniel may not have been in good health at this time as he makes note of payment as long as he lives in both the assignment to John and the sale to Charles Doyle and in the case of the sale to Charles Doyle, he would only have to live four years to see payment in full.

We can assume that Daniel's wife is not living by this time as there is no mention of Charles or John having to look after her or provide her with a decent burial.

Daniel was again noted 10 January 1825 in Lot 20 at the time he made his will (transcribed below).

It is interesting to note that Daniel did not make provision for any of his children and no other grandchildren were mentioned other than the children of his daughter Susanna Doyle.

The date Daniel's will is shown as having been 'proven' is December 12, 1879. It would appear that the will was either left for a number of years before being 'proven' as it appears Daniel probably died sometime around 1831/32 or that the date recorded is incorrect.

Cunard Rent Books for Lots 20 and 21

Daniel Delaney paid rent from 1822-1831, sometimes in cash, sometimes in goods eg. cow, ox, tobacco, indigo, oats and sometimes in labour such as digging a cellar. Nothing was located for him after 1831.

No death or burial record has been located for either Daniel or his wife. When they died, they may have been buried in the old cemetery in Park Corner (on the Doyle property). There is a record of a Roman Catholic chapel having been on this site in 1828.

Children of Daniel Delaney and <Unnamed> are:

2 i. Female3 Delaney, born Bet. 1782 - 1798; died Unknown.

Notes for Female Delaney:

Nothing is known about this third female listed in the 1798 census.

3 ii. Male Delaney, born Bet. 1782 - 1798; died Unknown.

Notes for Male Delaney:

Nothing is known about this third male listed in the 1798 census.

4 iii. Ann Delaney, born Abt. 1783; died Bef. 1845 in PEI. She married (1) William Myers/ Meyer(s) December 06, 1803 in PEI; born Unknown; died Bef. May 24, 1818. She married (2) Michael (Michel Mullone) Malone May 24, 1818 in St Augustine's Roman Catholic Church, Rustico, PEI; born Abt. 1774 in Ireland?; died Aft. 1850 in PEI.

Notes for Ann Delaney:

Date of birth approximate based on date of first marriage.

Notes for William Myers/ Meyer(s):

We know that William was in Lot 20 before August 1816 as he had leased land adjacent to the land Charles Doyle leased 9 August 1816.

It appears William may have been deceased by this date as Charles' land description states in part 'south of the east boundary of lands heretofore leased to William Myers and now Richard Ellsworth'

No burial record or further information has been located for William.

It does not appear William and Ann had any children. No baptisms have been located in any parish records.

Marriage Notes for Ann Delaney and William Meyer(s):

Reference PAPEI, RG 19, Series 3, Subseries1, Vol 1.

Married by license.

Notes for Michael (Michel Mullone) Malone:

St Augustine's Parish Records records Michel or Michael as 'domiciled' on the Island, son of 'Michel Mullone' and Marguerite Green(?) He was of the age of majority.

Witnesses were Urbain Galant, Charles Galant and others. Priest was Beaubien.

Microfilm records are in French, hence the name is probably Michael Malone. Michael was more than likely of Irish descent.

From The Top of The Hill - The History of an Island Community Irishtown - Burlington

Michael Malone is shown residing a short distance down the road from John Delaney.

Page 13 - Section of the Westerm Moiety of Township 20 - H J Cundall, 1850

Michael Malone is again shown in the 1850 on the same property, as is John Delaney.

Page 7 - Michael is again mentioned. In 1841 he was renting 50 acres from the Cunard estate and in 1845 his account had fallen into arrears with the notation 'This man, 71 years old, surrendered his lease, he being allowed to remain rent free for the rest of his life'.

Page 180 - It is indicated that Michael Malone, born c1774, was allowed to live out his remaining days without paying rent to Cunard on his 50 acres.

This is undoubtedly the same person. His wife Ann has not been mentioned. It is presumed that she was deceased by the time Michael encountered difficulties with his lease in 1845 and there were no children of this union to carry on the lease.

Marriage Notes for Ann Delaney and Michael Malone:

Marriage recorded in St Augustine's Parish Records has 'Anne Daleany' from PEI and was the widow of William 'Myers'.

+ 5 iv. Daniel Delaney, Jr, born Abt. 1787 in PEI?; died Bef. October 25, 1843 in PEI.

+ 6 v. John Delaney, born Abt. 1795 in Lot 20 , PEI; died Abt. 1847.

+ 7 vi. Susanah Delaney, born Abt. 1796 in PEI; died Bef. 1861 in probably Park Corner, PEI.

Generation No. 2

5. Daniel3 Delaney, Jr (Daniel2, Unknown1) was born Abt. 1787 in PEI?, and died Bef. October 25, 1843 in PEI. He married Ann Branahan Abt. 1808 in PEI. She was born Abt. 1790 in probably Ireland, and died Aft. January 26, 1848 in PEI.

Notes for Daniel Delaney, Jr:

Daniel's date of birth is estimated from approximate date of marriage (assuming an age of at least 21 at time of marriage).

Land Conveyance: 9 August, 1816 in Lot 20, PEI - Robert W Cundall (Liber 26, folio 126)

Daniel Delaney, younger, Lot 20, farmer leased 66 acres more or less, commencing from a stake fixed on the shore of the Gulf of St Lawrence, at the north point in extremity(?) of the east side a boundary line of lands in the occupation of John Donely from the south along said line 112ch until the line strikes the north side of Cousins pond, leading to the Princetown Road from there following the road sufficient distance east to include 6 ch due east, the running north to the shore, then along the shore.

Charles Doyle was a witness to the signing of the lease.

Daniel is noted in St Mary's Parish records as being deceased at the time of the marriage of his daughter Elizabeth Ann to John Brennan on Oct 25, 1843.

No burial record has been located for either Daniel or his wife. It is possible, they too may have been buried in the old cemetery in Park Corner.

Notes for Ann Branahan:

Ann's date of birth is estimated from approximate date of marriage (assuming an age of at least 18 at time of marriage).

No further information has been uncovered regarding Ann or her parents/siblings and no birth, death or burial records have been located. Could this name be another form of the surname 'Brennan?

Marriage Notes for Daniel Delaney and Ann Branahan:

Estimated date based on birth of first child.

Children of Daniel Delaney and Ann Branahan are:

+ 8 i. John4 Delaney, born Abt. 1809 in probably Lot 20, PEI; died March 12, 1878 in North Tryon, PEI.

+ 9 ii. Catherine Delaney, born Abt. 1814 in probably PEI; died May 23, 1852 in PEI.

10 iii. Mary Anne Delaney, born April 26, 1818 in PEI; died Unknown.

Notes for Mary Anne Delaney:

Mary Anne was located in the parish records of St Jean de Baptiste (Malpeque). Baptism recorded her as being the daughter of Donald Delany and Ann .........

Since the names 'Donald' and Daniel' are interchangeable, she is presumed to be a daughter of Daniel Delaney, Jr and Ann Branahan.

Godfather James McIntyre and Godmother Jeanne Colonn.

More About Mary Anne Delaney:

Baptism: September 27, 1818, St Jean de Baptiste Church Records (Malpeque) PEI

+ 11 iv. Elizabeth Ann Delaney, born Abt. 1821 in Springfield, PEI; died July 01, 1876 in PEI.

+ 12 v. Bartholomew Delaney, born Abt. 1821 in PEI; died April 08, 1894 in Saint John Co, New Brunswick.

+ 13 vi. Julianne Delaney, born Abt. 1832 in PEI; died Bef. February 10, 1862 in PEI.

+ 14 vii. Helen Delaney, born Abt. 1833 in PEI; died Bef. 1865 in probably Summerside, PEI.

6. John3 Delaney (Daniel2, Unknown1) was born Abt. 1795 in Lot 20, PEI, and died Abt. 1847. He married Sarah Murphy Abt. 1821 in PEI, daughter of James Murphy and Catherine Adams. She was born Bet. 1795 - 1797 in New London, PEI, and died March 20, 1887 in Irishtown, PEI.

Notes for John Delaney:

Since there is/was no 'Nineland' PEI, it is assumed this was name given to John's farm.

Land conveyance - 11 Nov 1828 in Lot 20, PEI - John Cambridge (liber 62, folio 165) Lease 18

John Delaney leased 50 acres for 999 years. The lease was countersigned by his wife Sarah

(with an X). The property is described as being on the north side of Dunn's Rd - 102 chains north, east 5 chains then south to the road.

It's interesting to note that John signed the lease 'John Dealeaney', the exact same spelling that Daniel Delaney used when signing his early lease.

This lease was later assigned to his son William L Delaney on March 26, 1863, by John's wife Sarah, as John had died. Terms of the assignment of the lease were that William had to sow 4 bushels of oats, 1 bushel of wheat, 1 bushel of barley and 4 bushels of potatoes for his mother Sarah's sole use for her natural life or for as long as she wanted. The lease was registered on January 12, 1864.

William was still residing on the property in the 1880 Meacham's Atlas.

John Delaney is shown as residing on the property described in the above mentioned 1828 lease.

Page 184 - States that the old Delaney farm dates back to about 1841 and that John Delaney, a blacksmith from Northern Ireland, leased the land from the Cundall estate.

This information regarding John is not accurate, as we now know.

Cunard Rent Books for Lots 20 and 21

John Delaney was found to have paid rent of 2 Pounds, 15 each year from 1841-1847. 'Widow' Delaney then paid rent from 1847-1863, when the lease was transferred to her son William Delaney.

19 v. Jonathan Delaney, born June 27, 1831 in New London, PEI; died Bef. December 05, 1833 in PEI.

Notes for Jonathan Delaney:

We have been unable to trace anything further about Jonathan. No burial record located to date.

It's possible he died young as next child born in 1833 was named John again.

Notes for John Delaney:

No further information has been located on this John Delaney.

It's interesting to note that on one of the passenger lists for the ship 'Prince Edward' which sailed to New Zealand in 1859, there is one John Delaney.

Could he have set sail for New Zealand?

More About John Delaney:

21 vii. Mary Ann Delaney, born June 21, 1836 in Irishtown, PEI; died Aft. February 1873 in possibly Summerside, PEI. She married James Dunnin(g) August 11, 1857 in probably New London, PEI; born Abt. 1835 in New London, PEI; died Aft. February 1873 in possibly Summerside, PEI.

Notes for Mary Ann Delaney:

Mary Ann and her husband James ‘Dunnin’ relinquished all title to the 50 acres of land her mother Sarah signed over to Mary Ann's brother William Delaney in a statement dated at Summerside in February, 1873. Both Mary Ann and James signed the document with an 'X'.

More About Mary Ann Delaney:

Baptism: July 17, 1836, By Rev. Wiggins, St. Mark's Anglican Church, Kensington, PEI. Book 2 Page 30

Notes for James Dunnin(g):

Date of birth approximate.

1798 Census Lot 20, PEI

There is a James 'Dunn' family located living in Lot 20. There is one male and one female age 16-60, presumably James and his wife. There are 6 males under age 16 and 1 female under 16.

It's possible James is a descendant of this James Dunn. A number of families can be found in the same area with various spellings of Dunn/Dunnin/Dunning, but their connection is unknown at this time.

To date, no death/burial records have been located and no baptismal records have been located for any children. The family has not been positively identified in any census records to date.

Could James be another son of Daniel Dunning and Mary Ann Vincent?

We do know both James and Mary Ann were still alive in February 1873 and possibly residing in Summerside (see notes under Mary Ann).

Marriage Notes for Mary Delaney and James Dunnin(g):

Married by license by Rev Wm Meek - Book 6, pge 72/73. Both James and Mary Ann were of New London, PEI when they received their license on Aug 8, 1857.

Bondsman John Dunnin (noted July 2004, PEI Archives)

+ 22 viii. Henry Charles Delaney, born 1840 in Kensington, PEI; died Unknown.

7. Susanah3 Delaney (Daniel2, Unknown1) was born Abt. 1796 in PEI, and died Bef. 1861 in probably Park Corner, PEI. She married Charles Doyle Abt. 1815 in PEI. He was born Abt. 1794 in Ireland, and died Abt. 1864 in Park Corner, PEI.

Notes for Susanah Delaney:

PEI Land Conveyance, Liber 26, Folio 135

She was noted in the lease signed 9 August 1816 between the Cundalls and her husband Charles Doyle.

She is again noted in Lot 20 on 10th January 1825, in PEI when Daniel, Sr's will was written.

Susanah was married with at least 3 children by the time her father Daniel's will was written in January, 1825.

Date of birth is approximate based on date of land lease and approximate date of birth of first child.

It can be presumed that Susanah is deceased by 1861 as no female over 60 was residing with Charles and family when the census was taken.

Notes for Charles Doyle:

1798 Census for PEI

No Doyle families were listed in the census, so it may be assumed that Charles arrived from Ireland* sometime between 1798 and August 1816 when he was granted his first land lease.

* Charles' son James indicated in the 1881 census that his father was born in Ireland.

St Mary's Roman Catholic Church Parish Records

Charles Doyle is recorded numerous times in parish records as a witness to burials and sponsor at baptisms.

Information on Charles and Susanah's descendants is largely from St Mary's Parish Records. His date of birth is approximate based on date of land lease and approximate date of birth of first child.

Land conveyance - 9 Aug 1816 - Penelope Bassett & Robert W Cundall

Charles leased 150 acres of land bounded by lands leased by William Meyer (Ann Delaney's husband) and Daniel Delaney, Jr. Witness to the lease was William Cousins.

Land Conveyance - 3 November 1821 in Lot 20, PEI - Daniel/Donald Delaney, senior of New London and Charles Doyle of the same place Farmer (RG 16, Liber 33, folio 590)

Daniel conveyed the western half of his farm containing 50 acres + and bounding John Delaney's farm, to Charles Doyle, his son-in-law.

We can assume that Daniel's wife is not living by this time, as there is no mention of Charles or John having to look after her or provide her with a decent burial.

Charles is noted in Daniel Delaney, Sr's will dated 10 Jan 1825 as being married to Daniel's daughter Susanah. Three daughters are listed in the will. Presumably, their other children were born after Daniel's will was written.

1861 Census for Lot 20, PEI (Page9)

Charles Doyle is residing in Lot 20 in 1861. He is a Roman Catholic farmer, head of a household of 7, consisting of 1 male and 1 female 21-45, 1 male and 1 female 5-16, 1 male and 1 female under 5 and 1 male over 60.

It can be concluded that Charles is the male over 60 and that the other residents are his son James, James' wife Ann and their 4 children as James is shown as still residing in this location in 1880.

Master Name Index - PEI

Charles Doyle is listed as the Postmaster in Park Corner in Hutchinson's PEI Directory 1864.

Pre 1875 PEI Postmasters Database - Island Register

Charles is shown as the Postmaster in Park Corner from 1859 to 1864. His son James appears to have taken over the duties as of 1865. Charles is probably deceased by this time.

PEI Island Repeal Association, August 15, 1844 (Transcript on Island Register - 1843/1844 Repeal Lists).

Charles Doyle was re-appointed a District Warden for New London.

No burial record has been located for either Charles or his wife Susanah.

It is possible they too, may be buried in the old cemetery in Park Corner. It appears that the land for the cemetery may have been donated by the Doyles (Christine Gorman June/2001).

From a list of property owners in the French River and Park Corner History, the property James Doyle was residing on in 1880 was subsequently owned by George Cousins in 1928 and then Donald Cousins in 1973. The book notes that the old cemetery is located on Donald Cousins farm.

The location of the cemetery at the end of the Irishtown Road (on the present-day 'Cousinsvale' farm), would appear to have been on the Doyle property in the early 1800's.

By 1901, no Doyle families are found in Lot 20.

Children of Susanah Delaney and Charles Doyle are:

+ 23 i. Mary4 Doyle, born Abt. 1816 in probably Park Corner, PEI; died Bef. 1881.

+ 24 ii. Sarah Doyle, born Abt. 1824 in probably Park Corner, PEI; died Bef. 1881.

25 iii. Margaret Doyle, born Bef. 1825 in probably in Park Corner, PEI; died Bef. 1881.

Notes for Margaret Doyle:

Margaret is noted in grandfather Daniel Delaney's will dated January 10, 1825.

Margaret Doyle is recorded in St Mary's Indian River Parish Records numerous times as a witness at weddings and sponsor at baptisms:

June 23, 1850 - sponsor at baptism of sister Sarah's son, Thomas Lawless

July 20, 1853 - sponsor at baptism of sister Mary's daughter, Mary Ann Knowlan

Nov 3, 1853 - witness at wedding of cousin Helen Delaney and Thomas Connick

Nov 14, 1854 - witness at wedding of cousin Bartholomew Delaney and Mary Woods

Feb 14, 1855 - sponsor at baptism of brother James Doyle's daughter Susanah

Generation No. 3

8. John4 Delaney (Daniel3, Daniel2, Unknown1) was born Abt. 1809 in probably Lot 20, PEI, and died March 12, 1878 in North Tryon, PEI. He married Mary Quigley January 28, 1846 in St Mary's Church, Indian River, PEI, daughter of Michael Quigley and Mary Clark. She was born December 12, 1822 in Tryon, PEI, and died Aft. 1901.

Notes for John Delaney:

Thanks to Beverley and Miriam Neill for all their work on this branch of the family.

This family is described in the book 'Remember Yesterday Vol II', pge 87. There are several known errors although the birth date of c1809 would appear to be correct.

Master Name Index at PEI Archives

Beverley Berney found an entry here regarding John Delaney's death announcement in the Summerside Journal, dated 25 Jul 1878. John died at North Tryon, PEI on March 12 1878 at age 69 years.

We do know John was not born in Ireland. Parish Records from the St Mary's Roman Catholic Church Parish records, Indian River, PEI (LDS Film 0862436) state the John Delaney who married Mary Quigley was the 'son of age of Donald Delaney deceased and Ann Brenahan of this parish'. Mary Quigley was the 'daughter of age of Michael Quigley and Mary Clark of Seven Mile Bay Parish' .

From these records, we know John and Mary were married on PEI, with the marriage recorded at St Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Indian River and that the marriage took place on 26 Jan 1846.

Baptisms of their first three children were also found in St Mary's Parish Records. The PEI Archives Baptism index shows that at least two later children were born at Tryon Rd and one baptism was recorded at Bedeque United Church, indicating they had some point also changed religion from Roman Catholic to Protestant.

A will for a John Delaney, Lot 28, Mt Tryon, farmer, written February 13, 1878 mentions wife Mary, sons William and John (who is under age 21) and daughter Barbara. Significantly, one of the executors was named Quigley. William was to receive 30 acres (representing the northern half of the property). Mary was to receive the southern half and all stock, implements, etc. except 2 sheep and 1 cow reserved the daughter Barbara. Mary's portion was to pass to William on her death. John was to receive the sum of $65 on attainment of age 21.

1861 Census Lot 28, PEI

John Delaney, RC, Farmer, is head of a household of 8, all born on PEI. There are 1 male and 1 female age 21-45, 1 female and 3 males aged 5-16 and 2 females under 5, which correlate to the known baptisms. John's age in this census does not agree with age in death notice.

1881 Census Lot 28, PEI

Mary Delaney is widowed, Irish, age 58, born in PEI and Methodist. Family residing at home includes William (24), Sarah E (23), Barbara (21), John (17) and Bessie Delaney born Apr at age 0. Bessie is more than likely the daughter of Barbara as Sarah is not residing with the family at this time.

1891 Census Lot 28, PEI

Son William Delaney is now the head of a household, which includes his widowed mother Mary (68), sisters Barbara (31) and Julia (28) and brother J C (John Clarke) (25). Also in the household are 2 neices, Bessie M (10) and Flora J (6). All were born in PEI. Additionally, William indicates both his parents were born in PEI and their religion is again stated as Methodist.

According to 'Remember Yesterday', John and Mary are both buried in Tryon People's Cemetery, but there is no stone for either of them. There are stones for son Michael's family.

Notes for Catherine Delaney:

Catherine and her family have been included here, attached to Daniel, Jr's family, for information purposes only at this time. She was discovered in the St Mary's Parish records. She lived in the same area and at the same time as several other Delaney relations. It is therefore conceivable that she is a descendant of Daniel Delaney, Sr, possibly a daughter of either Daniel, Jr or the unidentified male listed in the 1798 census.

St Mary's Roman Catholic Church Parish records

Catherine died just days after giving birth to her daughter Catherine. She was about 38 years old. Present at her burial were Simon Nowlan (husband of Mary Doyle) and James McDonald. The presence of Mary Doyle's husband Simon at her burial is a possible indication that she is somehow related to our Delaney family.

A baptism record has not been located.

Notes for Edward McAlduff:

The following is an interesting excerpt regarding Edward was received from Michael Meggison.

‘Edward inherited from his father the land where he lived all his life. According to his father's will, he was left 'thirty acres of land or thereabouts be the same more or less being part of the farm now held by me.

That is to say all that portion of such farm lying on the west side of the road from Alberton Cross to the Wharf now in his occupation...with the dwelling house and buildings thereon. Also the Northern Moiety or half part of the remainder of the said farm on the East side of the road such Moiety to be measured and staked out immedialely after my decease.'

When Edward died in 1879, a major controversy erupted upon his death. His widow, Margaret Brennan McAlduff, brought to PEI Probate Judge Charles Young a petition signed 9 August 1880. The petition claimed that Edward McAlduff gave his third son, Neil, his Last will and Testament. Upon Edward's death, she claimed, Neil either lost or destroyed the will in an attempt to gain control of his father's estate. The trouble was apparently smoothed out by 1881, because Neil and his step-mother are enumerated in the same household. He supposedly fled the island in the mid-1880's.

Notes for James Henry Delaney:

PEI Archived – Delaney File

According to notes on the family of John Delaney & Sarah Murphy in the Delaney family file, James & Sarah settled in New Brunswick in 1858.

Thanks to that intrepid sleuth, new found cousin Norm (just call him Sherlock) Delaney, he was able to confirm this information and add to our missing link!

He also was able to find James, Sarah & their family in the 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 census for Weldford Parish, Kent Co, New Brunswick.

The following is an excerpt from information on his web site.

'In 1858, James Henry, Sarah and their four children: John, Sarah, James Henry Jr. and Eliza Jane moved from O'Leary, PEI to Kingston (now Rexton) on the east coast of New Brunswick. It was here that George was born in 1861.

In approximately 1863, they moved 7 miles further inland to the small lumbering community of West Branch where James Delaney bought a piece of land from a prominent West Branch resident, Terrance Curran. (founder of St. Johns Methodist/United Church).

James and Sarah farmed this land until July, 1903, when it was sold. By then the children were gone. Oldest son, John moved to Sackville, Sarah and James Jr. had died young, Eliza and George moved to Wallingford, Connecticut and Albert moved to the community next door in Main River'.

It was around this time (1904-1905) that James' wife, Sarah (at the approximate age of 80) died of burns when she accidently fell into the fireplace. A distraught James was soon to follow the earlier trek of two of his children to Connecticut where he lived out the rest of his life.

Sarah is apparently buried in the cemetery at St. John's church, although no marker has been located.

Burial: In Memorium Cemetery, Wallingford, Connecticut

Notes for Sara Ann Isabel Holmes Brown:

Oral history says that Sara's father, Hutty Brown, was an Admiral in the Queens (British) Navy and he was awarded a jeweled scarab for his bravery in India. He had given it to his daughter Sarah as a gift, but it disappeared after her death.

22. Henry Charles4 Delaney (John3, Daniel2, Unknown1) was born 1840 in Kensington, PEI, and died Unknown. He married Elizabeth Palmer December 30, 1857 in PEI. She was born Unknown, and died Unknown.

Notes for Henry Charles Delaney:

Henry so far is a mystery. It's still uncertain as to whether or not he is definitely a child of John and Sarah, but material received from Francine Enwright via Elizabeth Delaney and information in the Delaney file at the PEI Archives indicates that he is another son of John and Sarah Delaney.

An LDS IGI birth record was also submitted for Henry by an unknown member of the LDS Church showing parents as John Delaney and Sarah Murphy.

The date of birth is also questionable based on the date of his marriage. If Henry was born in 1840 and he married in 1857, he would only be about 17 years old. Most males did not marry this young.

No birth/baptism/death record has been located. There is no trace of the family in the census records.

Notes for Elizabeth Palmer:

Nothing further is known at this time about this Elizabeth Palmer or if she has any connection to our other Palmer relations.

23. Mary4 Doyle (Susanah3 Delaney, Daniel2, Unknown1) was born Abt. 1816 in probably Park Corner, PEI, and died Bef. 1881. She married Simon Nowlan Bef. 1836 in PEI. He was born Abt. 1814, and died Bef. 1881.

Notes for Mary Doyle:

Mary is noted in grandfather Daniel Delaney's will dated January 10, 1825.

It is presumed that the Mary Doyle married to Simon Nowlan located in St Mary's Indian River Parish Records is the same person.

Mary sponsored the baptism of Sarah Doyle and James Lawless' son Charles. The baptism of Mary and Simon's son James was sponsored by Charles and Susanah Doyle (her parents) and the baptism of her daughter Mary Ann was sponsored by Bartholomew Delaney (her 1st cousin) and Margaret Doyle (her sister).

26. Catherine4 Doyle (Susanah3 Delaney, Daniel2, Unknown1) was born Aft. February 1825 in probably Park Corner, PEI, and died Bef. 1881. She married Martin Connick Bef. 1856. He was born Unknown in probably Ireland, and died Bef. 1881.

Notes for Catherine Doyle:

Catherine was found in St Mary's Parish Records. She is probably a child of Charles Doyle and Susanah Delaney as they are the only Doyle's located in this area.

Notes for Martin Connick:

There is some question as to what relation Martin is to the other Connick families on PEI.

In an e-mail from Carol Connick Feb/2002, I received the following information:

'The Catherine Doyle who married Martin Connick that you show as #20 in your genealogy are listed under Descendants of Martin Connick (1821) on the www.connicks.com site. They were married in Nelson, Miramichi, NB Nov. 27, 1844 and all of the Connicks from that area are descended from them.

In 1998 when we had the first Connick Family Reunion about 20 of them came to Kensington to the reunion.'

Information received from Barry Connick Dec/2002, suggests that Martin may be the brother of Thomas Connick, who married Helen Delaney. We know from St Mary's Parish records, that Thomas was the son of Matthew Connick and Bridget Brennan. They also had a son Martin, but their son Martin (1838-1920) married a Sarah Elizabeth Murphy and had no children (History of Spring Valley).

1881 Census Nelson, Northumberland, New Brunswick, Canada

A Martin 'Connic' (65), Irish Roman Catholic, Farmer, born in Ireland is residing with his wife 'Cathrine' (57), Irish Roman Catholic, born in New Brunswick. The family consists of John (33), Mathew (22), Annie (18) and Thomas (16). All were born in New Brunswick. Also living with the family is a Patrick Creamer, age 1mth.

This family appears to match Carol Connick's information, except everyone in the family, with the exception of Martin, states they were born in New Brunswick.

Since 2 of the children that we know of for sure were baptized in Indian River, PEI, the New Brunswick connection is questionable at this time.

Children of Catherine Doyle and Martin Connick are:

Notes for James Doyle:

James was located in St Mary's Parish Records.

Based on the following information, it can be determined that he is almost definitely the son of Charles Doyle and Susanah Delaney.

James' two daughters Susanah and Sarah both required dispensations in the third degree of consanguinity before marrying their second cousins, John Thomas Brennan and James Brennan respectively, both sons of Elizabeth Ann Delaney. James would therefore be a 1st cousin to Elizabeth Ann Delaney and a grandson of Daniel Delaney, Sr.

1861 Census for Lot 20, PEI (Page9) - Source Reference: William Glen, CG

Charles Doyle is residing in Lot 20. He is a Roman Catholic farmer, head of a household of 7 - 1 male and 1 female 21-45, 1 male and 1 female 5-16, 1 male and 1 female under 5 and 1 male over 60.

It is presumed Charles is the male over 60 and the other residents are his son James, daughter-in-law Ann and their children, as they are still residing there in 1880 and 1881.

1880 Meacham's Atlas

James Doyle is residing on 100 acres of land located south of Cousin's Pond and situated between 2 parcels of land then owned by James Cousins. This property is located in the same area as the 50 acre parcel of land Daniel Delaney sold to Charles Doyle in Nov 1821.

1881 Census Lot 20 Queens Co, PEI

Based on Ann's age, Clara Elizabeth is most probably a grandchild. It's uncertain who her parents are. She has been listed here as a child for information purposes.

1891 Census Lot 20 Queens Co, PEI

James is again found in the 1891 Census for Lot 20 with wife Ann (61), sons Charles (26), William (22) and Leonard (15). James indicates his father was born in Ireland and his mother in PEI. There is no mention of Sarah, Margaret or Clara Elizabeth.

84. Jonathan5 Delaney (William Layton4, John3, Daniel2, Unknown1) was born May 19, 1848 in Irishtown, PEI, and died February 17, 1933 in French River, PEI. He married Jane Amelia MacKenzie December 21, 1881 in PEI, daughter of George MacKenzie and Hannah MacKay. She was born December 09, 1848 in French River, PEI, and died December 17, 1932 in French River, PEI.

Notes for Jonathan Delaney:

Jonathan left Irishtown in the early 1880's and moved to French River. He subsequently built a house (c1881) on land which at that time was part of Colin MacKenzie's 113 acre property. It's uncertain as to whether the land on which the house was built was to have been a wedding present from Colin to his sister Jane as the title to the property was never deeded to either Jane or Jonathan. Colin's brother George appears to have inherited the property after Colin's death in 1910 as George is shown as the owner of this same 113 acres in the 1928 Atlas (reproduced in French River and Park Corner History).

Jonathan resided here until his death in 1933 and neither the land nor the house were included as part of his estate.

Jonathan's son William resided on the property his entire life until his death in 1954. Title to the property was apparently still in the MacKenzie name at the time of William's death. His son Eric eventually received title to the property and subsequently sold it to Gertrude Lamont. She was listed as the owner in 1973. The property is currently owned by Gertrude's son Wilbur Lamont. He kept the house open as as a tourist attraction for a number of years (until 2003) as 'Anne's House of Dreams' (from the Lucy Maud Montgomery books).

The stairs leading from the second floor up to the attic were salvaged from the wreck of the 'Marco Polo' which sank off Cavendish in 1873.

A baptism record has not been located for Jonathan, however it is a known fact that he is the son of William Delaney and MaryAnn Warren for several reasons:

1) Oral family history as related by his grandson Eric Delaney

2) A framed Family Tree showing the family of William Delaney and Mary Ann Warren in the attic at the French River house -- viewed by Beverley Delaney and June Delaney in Sept/71 and again by Beverley about 1976. The current whereabouts of this document is unknown. According to Wilbur Lamont (2002), it was last thought to be in the possession of Jean Howatt, who is now deceased. She apparently was attempting to transcribe the information as the writing in the document was becoming very faint.

3) Jonathan's second son was named William Layton after his own father.

Ships and Seafarers of Atlantic Canada CD

Published by Maritime History Archive, Memorial University of Newfoundland

John Delaney of French River PEI is listed as the owner of a 2-masted schooner named the 'R. Beatrice' in 1903.

Jonathan died intestate in 1933. Estate Administration was granted to his son William on 14 March 1933. Curiously, the court records were under the name of 'Joseph Delaney'. His eldest son, John MacKenzie Delaney and his wife Ida, by then living in Calgary Alberta, signed over interest in Jonathan's estate to William, using his father's correct name of Jonathan.

It is a mystery as to why the court documents use the name Joseph.

PEI Vital Statistics have been unable to locate a death certificate under the name of Jonathan or Joseph.

The Charlottetown Daily Examiner, September 2, 1904 - Harvest Excursions, 1904:

From all indications, John spent some time in High River, Alberta before finally settling in Calgary, Alberta and becoming a successful businessman.
