1. JAMES¹ GASS was born on 21 Feb 1790 in Kirkcudbright Scotland. He died in 1848 in Prince Edward Island Canada. He married (1) MARTHA MARGARET W COPELAND, daughter of Alexander (projected) Copland and Agnes (Projected) Bryce on 12 Aug 1821. She was born on 29 Jun 1797 in Crossmichael, Kirkcudbright, Scotland. She died in 1848 in but Not in 1841 Census. He married (2) MARTHA BLAIN on 15/12/1806 in Troqueer Kirkcudbright. She was born in 1790 in Kirkcudbright Scotland.

Notes for James Gass:

In the 1841 census of PEI, section 31, James is noted as having been born in 1810 and, at that time having 3 daughters and 3 sons under 16 and 1 son over 16. All children were born in PEI with Ann being the first in 1821. Ann's birth may be the reason they stopped in PEI rather than going to Nova Scotia as much of the other Gass families did. They were married in 1821 at the Margate United Church but letters to the church noted that there were no records of that period as ministers came and went much like circuit riders. NOTE: James & young family are the only Gass's listed on PEI as of 1841 There is no one in this county by the name of Gass in the 1821 census

Grammy Gass was living in a trailer on Peace Court in Brewer for much of my memory. The rest of the family lived next door in the old house. She was a sweetie but didn't take any guff, especially fr o m her rowdy crowd of a family. I remember that she drank her tea in a bowl

Notes for James William Gass:

WE were never close. He worked many, many years at Fafnir Bearing Co and much of that on the

3-11 shift so was seldom around when I was awake much of the week. He was a drinker, smoker and rambler b u t the paycheck always was in the bank for 30+ years Dad worked over 30 years at Fafnirs and helped many Maine friends and relatives resettle and find work in Connecticut.

Notes for Gwendolyn Bertha Hazelton:

Mom. I remember her working something clerical at Sear's when I was first in school and for many years doing the same or bookkeeping for Guida's dairy. While at Sears, had to be early 1950's, I remember s h e was one of the first woment to wear pants suits. She was always religious and got more so as she aged. A wonderful woman, always gentle. Stuck with the family through thick and thin and there wa s p lenty of both My sister legally outflanked me in caring for her in her elder years and then left her essentially alone in a nursing home for a decade. I only knew she died when a monthly letter to her was returned marked 'deceased'. Mom was a quiet, intelligent, long-suffering, religious woman who always tried to make the best she could from what appeared to be her lot in life. I see she had few friends outside of family and no enemies that I ever heard of.

Obituary: She was born in Bangor, Maine, and had been employed at Guida Siebert Dairy for 25 years. She was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, New Britain.

She is survived by a daughter, Lois Haberski of Uncasville; a son, Christopher Wright of Canada; many grandchildren, including Leon Haberski; and many great-grandchildren, including Jason Haberski. Her husband, James William Gass, died previously.

Services will be Monday at 7 p.m. at Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home, 411 S. Main St., New Britain. Burial will be private in Rose Hill Memorial Park, Rocky Hill. Calling hours are Monday from 5 p.m. until the time of the service.

Notes for Christopher Garrett Wright:

Christopher had a varied life, from Puritan New England to Interior Alaska and beyond. Born as Richard Brian Gass, he voluntarily and purposefully changed his name to Christopher Garret Wright. After 4 years in the Navy as an aircrewman on P2V and P3B, anti-submarine aircraft, he wandered a bit in the roaring years of the mid 1960's. Starting as a loner biker, he had one of those life changing experiences in attending the famed Woodstock Festival in 1969. He got shanghied into helping out in the medical tent and went on to almost 30 years of Mental Health Counseling - almost always on the edges of society - from the streets of Connecticut to the hills of Oregon and the very backwoods of interior Alaska. Along the way he wrote three books, had small businesses (private counseling, computer repair/instruction, gift shops, community centers), wrote grants and administered Native villages. His high points included participation with two fine children and three fine spouses. He was last heard from in Copper Center, Alaska, wondering and being grateful daily on how he ended up with 11 lovely acres on the Klutina River in a land with very little law and a whole bunch of salmon - and finally finding the perfect woman/partner/friend/lover.
