27. Phebe Strang36, born 1801 in Bedeque, PEI; died 1881 in Price Settlement, N.B.. She was the daughter of 54. Jesse Strang and 55. Sarah Adelia Wright.

Notes for William Redmond Price:

William grew up on a pioneer farm participating in the unrelenting labor of land clearing and planting wheat and potatoes among the tree stumps. Only ten or twelve acres were cleared at first. Oxen were used and simple hand tools such as a sickle for cutting grain and a flail made of two sticks tied together used for threshing. Trout from the Dunk River, salmon when in season, and oysters from the Bay along with strawberries, raspberries, and cranberries nearby were plentiful. A one or possibly two room cabin made of rough hewn logs would have been the first home. By 1830, a large frame house was built. Today, enlarged, it is a handsome house in Lower Bedeque, Prince Edward Island, Canada, the center of a productive farm owned by Stuart Affleck.

The practice of religion would have been difficult for William and his family in those early years. Prince Edward Island was an outpost of the British Empire with a population in 1803 of about 7,000 souls scattered throughout the island. As a British colony, Prince Edward Island had only one official established church, the Church of England. However, with the passage of the "Enabling Act" by the Island Legislature between 1783 and 1785, "free exercise of Papish, Quaker, and Methodist faiths was possible. Nevertheless, the scattered settlements had to wait for infrequent missionary visits fron Nova Scotia for preaching and baptisms. Non-Anglican marriages continued to be illegal until 1832. Those who preferred not to conform to the Church of England could obtain a license and be married by a Justice of the Peace.

Most of the settlers around the shores of Bedeque Bay were Presbyterian with the exception of a sprinkling of Quakers and Anglicans and two Roman Catholic families. In the summer of 1794, Dr. James McGregor, a famous Presbyterian minister of Pictou, Nova Scotia, preached the first sermon in Bedeque. On his second visit he baptized sixty children at Princetown on the north shore. Jesse Strang, a Loyalist from New York, who later became Williams father-in-law, donated land for the first Presbyterian Meeting House built in Bedeque around 1800. It was located on the site of the present North Bedeque Cemetery.

Methodism began to rival Presbyterians and by 1818, Jesse Strang converted to Methodism as did other residents. In the 1841 Prince Edward Island Census, Williams father, Richard Price, and three of William's brothers, Richard, James, and Michael, are listed as Methodists. William's first five children, born on Prince Edward Island, were baptized by Methodistministers. William's mother, born in Ireland, was no doubt a Roman Catholic by birth, but it seems that Catholicism had no lasting influence on her family.

Schooling was also a hit or miss affair for William. There was no strong attempt to provide government supported schools for the Island until in 1825, "an act for the encouragement of Education in the different Counties and Districts in this island" was passed by the Provincial Legislature. During the previous twenty-five years there was talk of doing something to provide education. One bill, which did receive some serious attention, proposed building and supporting schools by taxing "Rum and other distilled spiritous Liquors an additional sum of two pence per gallon over and above the present tenpence per gallon, the sum of one penny half penny on every pound of leaf tobacco and two pence on every pound of manufactured tobacco or snuf". This bill was defeated.

Some communities did try to provide space for a teacher in which to hold classes. It is thought that there was a school in Bedeque as early as 1800. John Baker Schurman, born in Bedeque, states in his memoirs that he went to school in 1809 or 1810, and by 1814 or 1815 there was a school in Central Bedeque which children attended from the various districts of Bedeque. The quality of teaching varied greatly and teachers often left after a year. Teachers received payment from students according to the number of subjects taken.

Encouragement for William to learn to read and write could have come from his father, who, although he signed the Indenture of 1786 from Governor Patterson with his mark, he clearly wrote his name on his Will in 1840. Evidence that William did learn to write is his signature on a Petition to the Provincial Government of New Brunswick in 1852 to purchase land.

The first official record for William found so far is in the Shipping Registers. Small boats were the best means of transportation to Charlotetown or to the mainland, and many farmers built their own. Bedeque became one of the important centers for the Island's ship building industry. William and his older brother George were partners with a 64th share each in a vessel called the "Nelson" built in Bedeque in 1817. The Nelson was 34' long, 10' wide with two masts and had a gross weight of 15 tons. It would have been used for carrying surplus farm products and some passengers to Newcastle on the Mirimachi River, the great business and shipping center on the northeast coast of New Brunswick.

Notes for RICHARD PRICE:

[Pricefam.FTW]

Richard joined the British Army at the age of 15 on 23 December, 1780. He served under Cornwallas and was captured at the Battle of Cowpens, South Carolina. Richard was discharged in Charlestown, South Carolina.

Richard went to Shelburne, Nova Scotia and as an unmarried Private disbanded from His Majesty's 7th Regiment of Foot he was granted one hundred acres of land on the Island of St. John.

Richard arrived on St. John on 26 July, 1784 and took up farming land on Lot number 25 on the north side of the Dunk River at the head of Bedeque Bay. On 1 May, 1792 he leased from Anthony Gordon and Robert Gordon, absentee landlords, through their agent Thomas Wright, one hundred acres in Lower Bedeque, Lot number 26, for a thousand years. For the "Rents, Covenants and Agreements" Richard promised to pay "Twopence Sterling the first year, Fourpence for the second year and Sixpence for the third year and for every year thereafter..." A memorandum added to the document states that "in consideration of the present scarcity of cash or current coin throughout the Island of St. John that the several rents may be paid in Merchantable Wheat or Flour in lieu thereof and during the first twelve years of the term..."

On 8 November, 1797 Richard sold his property on Lot number 25 to his neighbor David Murray for Ten Pounds Halifax Currency.

Louis XIV of France in 1720 by proclamation notified Protestant refugees who escaped, leaving their estates and properties in France could apply in person to have such estates and properties returned to them. In his dead father's place, Gabriel was sent by his mother to make a claim. Gabriel left from New York to England under the patronage of Mr. Simpson, family friend and hoping for further aid from his uncle Hubert and friends in England and on to France. He was successful to some extent receiving a considerable amount but not the full value of the estates. Gabriel returned to his uncle in England and forwarded a sum, trifling in comparison to what was expected. Gabriel remained in England where he had a son, and later married a second time. He did not keep in touch with the family in America.
