The following is a text Peter wrote for the 200th anniversary year of the arrival of the "Polly" to PEI. It is followed by the lineage.

Wednesday, March 05, 2003

This is the story of why and how I became interested in John Gillies, "Polly Pioneer", of Flat River PEI.

I had been researching my ancestry for the past 20 odd years and in the year 2001 my wife and I crossed the ocean to research the paternal side of my family in Scotland, (Gillis, Gillies), and the maternal side in England. We took and overnight coach from London to Inverness where we hired a car and drove to Kishorn in the Parish of Applecross, Ross shire. There we inquired at the local store, owned by John Cowell, of the name Gillis, to see if anyone by that name still resided in the area. We were referred to two people, one was across the road at the Post Office, which, ironically, was located on part of the Sanachan farm from which my ancestor, Donald Gillies, immigrated to Cape Breton in August of 1820. There was some dispute over which of the buildings there had actually been the "big house" of Sanachan.

The Postmistress, Mrs. MacBeath, could not help us, though her late husband had researched many of the locals, but kindly allowed us to go through many of his papers. We then went to visit Mrs. Helen Murchaison, nee MacKenzie, in a little village called Achintraid, south of Kishorn by about 2 km. This lovely lady invited us in for tea and then took us to an old cemetery in Kishorn, which was located on another farm called Court Hill, where the ruins of the large mansion stood. There were 9 stones in this cemetery with Gillies' buried beneath them, according to Helen, most of these had lived in Plockton after being evicted from Russel. Helen then went with us across to the opposite side of the Kishorn River estuary where she pointed out where the various farms were located: Russel, where we sat, Court Hill, Lac Na Copaig, then Tornapress and Rassal, across and up the river. Helen related many stories of local lore, which were very interesting. She only knew of two Gillies' in Applecross and one of these was only a summer resident.

We carried on to Applecross where we visited the local church established ca. 600, dedicated by Saint Maelrubha. There we found several more Gillies stones, 24 in total. The church was very old and not used on a daily basis any longer. When we left there we drove around the village of Applecross where we went to a local store and Post Office to get directions to Angus Gillies' home. He was the only Gillies residing in Applecross. A young lady in the store, Geanette MacRae, said if I followed her she would take us right to his place as she lived across the road from him. When we got there Geanette invited us in to meet her mother. We chatted with them for an hour or so and then were directed to go across the way to Ewan and Mary MacKenzie's as Ewan was well versed in the local genealogy. Here we learned Angus was not home but was in Inverness for a minor operation, so we did not see him but Ewan told us there were twin sisters who had been Gillies', one lived in Loch Carron. We stayed overnight at a B&B, Ceol na Mara, in Camusteel, with John and Elizabeth MacBeath and the next morning we followed the road to it's end in Toscaig then went back to Kishorn. It was too early in the day to look up Janet MacKay, one of the twins. After we left Kishorn we stopped in Loch Carron, checked the cemetery there, then went to visit Jean MacKenzie, the other twin. We had a nice chat and she gave me a book, "Gillies Of Partick", on the life of Rev. Kenneth Gillies from Applecross. He served the church of Partick in Glasgow for 52 years. The book gives his genealogy and was written by his grandson, Kenneth A. Gillies. We returned to Inverness via Morar where I tried to get in touch with Dr. Alexander Gillies, the summer resident of Culduie, in Applecross. He was the son of the Rev. Gillies in the book. I wasn't able to get in touch with him until after I returned home to Canada but after several telephone calls and correspondence we came to the conclusion that we were of the same family. It was he who told me the story that his grandfather's brother, John, had gone to America on the ship "Polly". This story had been handed down through the generations and was related to him by a cousin, Roddy MacIntosh, the grandson of Duncan, John's brother.

Once I had this information from Dr. Gillies I went to the Internet to try to find out about the ship "Polly". I found the "Polly" was one of three ships that brought "Selkirk Settlers" to the Belfast area of PEI in 1803. There was no other mention of voyages for this ship to Canada. I found a partial reconstruction of the passenger list from this same article and there was mention of John Gillies, Flat River, in an article in the early 1900's, which stated that his grandfather, John, came in 1803 on the "Polly". My next step was to find out if there were any Gillies/Gillis families left in the Flat River area of PEI as there was none listed in the PEI directory for the town. I looked for any in nearby villages and called John Alexander Gillis, whom I thought would be the nearest location, in Belle River. His wife Christy answered and said her husband's family was from Flat River and they had lived there until recently. I made a trip over to PEI to visit and gather more information. I was referred to Ernest McLeod who was a local genealogist married to Edna Nicholson, widow of Dr. John Martin Gillis, of the family of John (the immigrant from the "Polly"). Ernie was very helpful and gave me lots of information to work on. I should have gathered more of his work while he was still there to interpret all he had done. I did make other trips back to his place and called as well but unfortunately, Ernie passed away recently and his knowledge, that wasn't already organized in his computer, has gone with him. I disagreed on one assumption of Ernie's and that was that I believe John Gillis, married to Catherine Morrison, was the son of John, "Polly" pioneer and not the son of Murdoch, pioneer of Point Prim as Ernie believed. Ernie's view was that there was no evidence one way or the other because there was such a mix up with all of the many John Gillis'. The "Belfast Book" lists John Gillis, John's son, married to Catherine Morrison with 7 children. This John, as the eldest son, had been situated on 40 acres of his father, John's, original 100 acre parcel. If he was Murdoch's son why was he not on part of Murdoch's 135 acres? He is not mentioned in John pioneer's will of 1857 because he would have had his "inheritance" as the 40 acre parcel he was already on. The will stipulates that the remaining 60 acres was to go to "my youngest son, John" who was to look after his mother. This also makes up the 100 acre original piece of land. I believe there were two sons named John in this family. It does not seem strange to me because there were two Donald's in my grandfather's family and also two Donald's in my grandfather's first cousin's family. I have seen the same in several other families. From a list compiled in 1903 by Malcolm A. MacQueen, John Gillis of Flat River arrived in 1803 with a wife, one son and one daughter. I assume the son was this same John, born ca 1801. John, pioneer, and Murdoch, pioneer were both from Applecross in Scotland according to family tradition. If this is true, going back to Applecross in the year 1797 in a list compiled by John MacKenzie, 7th Laird of Applecross, of men between 15 and 60 years of age in the whole parish, there are 12 Gillies'. Of these, Duncan of South Glen, Alexander and Donald of Tornapress are known to be the sons of John and Kirsty MacIntosh. If this John was still alive at that time, the only John (Mc)Gillis was mentioned as being in Toskag (Toscaig) with his son John, an apprentice carpenter. These could be the father and brother of the above Duncan, Alexander and Donald. Is this John the one who came on the "Polly"? There is a Murdoch (Mc)Gillis with son John in Miltown in the same list. If this Murdoch were the same one that came to Point Prim by 1803 his son John would be at least 21 yrs. of age then. He would be much too old to be the John married to Catherine Morrison as this John was born 1801 and died on 03 Jan 1886.

In a letter to the editor of The Examiner, 15 May 1879, about the Belfast Church and burial ground, it says the first three graves dug, in the order that they were placed, were Angus MacEachern, John Gillis, and Mary MacRae. A stone for Mary says April 1826 so this John Gillis mentioned would have died ca 1825. Who was he? In discussions with Eric Gillis of Dartmouth, NS, he agreed that there is a gap in Murdoch's genealogy from which he (Eric) descends. Murdoch died in 1830, age 88, native of Rossshire, Scotland, supposedly married twice and the children that are supposedly his were John, born 1807, Murdoch, 1811, Jessie, 1819 and John Donald, Ann, Mary and Margaret for whom I have no birthdates. This would make him very old having these children, possible, but also more possible that there is a generation missing and these children are his grandchildren. Were they perhaps children of the John who was buried in Belfast in ca 1825? He would have been ca. 50 years of age if he were the same John, son of Murdoch in the 1897 Applecross list. Without some dates for his two marriages, or baptisms for these children, who their mothers were etc., I am skeptical that this data has merit. Therefore I give the following as this family tree and believe the fourth son of John and Christy MacIntosh, Donald, is my great-great-grandfather. If anyone knows of any information adding to or disputing this theory I would be happy to hear from them as I could also be mistaken with such a lack of hard records.
