Descendants of James Hodgson

1. James Hodgson born circa 1729, Occupation: Yeoman, married (1) Hannah Beatty/Batty?, (daughter of Richard Beatty/Batty and ________) died 13 Jul 1779, Yorkshire, ENGLAND, married (2) Sarah ________, died after 1818, Liv. Fangfoss, E.R.Y., ENG. James died 8 Mar 1818, Fangfoss, E.R.Y., ENG. I have been unable to find out where James came from. He seems to have arrived in Fangfoss as a widower with a grown family. It was a surprise to find Sarah, his wife, mentioned in his will. There was no mention of her in the family bible or family stories.

Hannah: In this area of Yorkshire the Beatty name is almost non-existant. There are several Batty names. Beatty is a Scottish name.

Children by Hannah Beatty/Batty?:

i John Hodgson Occupation: Farmer, died after 1818, Liv. Fangfoss, E.R.Y., ENG. Mentioned in his father's will of 1818. In 1851 census there is a John Hodgson, widower, aged 76 [b. circa 1775] born in Whitwell, YKS, living with Richard Beal [Bro/o Mary Beal] in Painsthorpe.

Hannah died Lived, Fangfoss, E.R.Y., ENG.

William: All references to William Rispin in the parish records refer to him as a Farmer in Fangfoss. On the 1851 census he is living with his daughter Alice and is listed as an Ag. Lab. This is quite a come-down socially and financially. Why? Where are his sons and why isn't he living with one of them if he is unable to work a farm - which is quite possible at age 77.

i Thomas Rispin born 1833, Fangfoss, E.R.Y., ENG, bapt. 1 Sep 1833, Fangfoss, E.R.Y., ENG.

9. William Rispin born 5 Apr 1803, Fangfoss, E.R.Y., ENG, bapt. 15 Apr 1803, Fangfoss, E.R.Y., ENG, and Mary Varley.

Mary: While searching the Fangfoss parish records for references to Hodgsons and relatives I found Mary Varley having an illegitimate son, Jesse, by William Rispin in 1828 and assumed that this was William Jr. However, a problem has arisen! In the 1851 census for Fangfoss, William Rispin is living, a widower aged 77, an Ag Lab born in Fangfoss. This fits parish information about William Sr. He was the head of a household containing his married daughter, Alice Pattrick, aged 30, and her children Ellen and George. Back to the parish records because I must have missed her - still didn't find her christening there nor on the IGI. Next I tried this from another angle. Checked the IGI for her marriage - nothing! Back to the census to search further afield for her husband who may be living somewhere other than Fangfoss. Found a Thomas Patterick working as a shepherd in Painsthorp. He was aged 31, born in Friday Thorpe. Back to the IGI for his marriage and there it is -- to Alice VARLEY!!! on 29 June 1844 in Fangfoss. This date fits the children's ages. Now, to check the parish records for Alice Varley's christening and there she is! christened in Fangfoss on 21 Dec 1820, the daughter of Mary Varley -- no father listed. Mary also has three more children christened without benefit of a father (not counting Jesse). So, the questions are as follows: 1) Is William Jr. or William Sr. the father of Jesse? 2) Is William Sr. the father of Alice or is it a census mistake and he is the grandfather? A more reasonable premise due to ages involved. 3) If the first and fourth children of five have the same father, do the others? 4) If so why didn't he claim them? William Jr. would have been underage at the time of Alice's birth but not for the others.
