The Descendants of William Lowe Sr. and Newell Fox

First Generation

1. William LOWE Sr. [746], son of Martha LOWE [2885], was born in 1781 in ENG, UK, died on 21 Dec 1840 in L23, PE, CAN aged 59, and was buried on 23 Dec 1840 in Charlottetown, PE, CAN.

Death Notes: Rustico

Burial Notes: Old Protestant Burying Ground

General Notes: William Lowe Sr. (a.k.a. William Low) story by Jean Lowe

In December of 1829, William and Newell were living in Aylsham, Norfolk. Their son, Samuel, who lived in Bungay, Suffolk, walked through deep snow to visit them as was indicated in a letter. William and Newell Lowe, and children at home were planning to emigrate to British North America the following summer. They left England for the New World shortly after. Whitsuntide (May 30) 1830 was the last time Samuel saw his father. Sailing with them was their 19-year old son, William Jr., and their three youngest daughters: Sarah, Emily, and Lydiann who was eleven years old. There were other settlers from Norfolk and Suffolk on that ship to new land and promise. Among them was Martha, daughter of William and Newell, with her husband, Robert Stratton Smith, and their two children.

After arrival on Prince Edward Island, William Sr., by making his mark, entered into a lease with D.S. Rennie for land as follows:

"COMMENCING at a stake fixed on the East side of the road leading from Charlotte Town to New Glasgow at the northern boundary of land leased to Richard Murphy thence running north sixty four degrees east to the Division line between Lots in Townships twenty three and twenty-four, thence North along said line to the southern Boundary of Land leased to Adolphus King south sixty four degrees West to the said Road, thence along said Road to the place of beginning having a front of seven chains on said Road containing by estimation twenty-six acres, more or less, together with all Buildings, Woods, Underwoods, Ways, Waters, Watercourses, Profits Commodities and Appurtenances."

Twenty-six acres of land was sufficient for him and his family as William Sr., who had been a builder himself, had suffered some event or malady which made it impossible for him to continue in the trade. (1841 census, Wm Sr. lists his occupation as Taylor) Samuel, in a letter to William Jr., reminisces about when their father used to join with his sons in the game of cricket, but "he is somewhat altered since then."

William Sr. and his family found pioneer life strenuous and demanding but they persevered and when William Sr. died on 21 Dec 1840, he had 26 acres in good order, a great deal ready for the plough, plenty of horned cattle, and an abundance of wood for the carpenter/builder trade. (Samuel, in a letter to William Jr., copies a letter written by Martha to her Aunt Beeson after her father's death in 1840, intended for him and which he finally receives in 1869.)

After William Sr. died, Martha, on her mother's behalf, because William did not have a will, wrote to her husband's aunt to locate Samuel to let him know of the death and ask him to come to PEI to take over his father's property and assets. William Jr. would get his father's tools of the trade. Unfortunately, Samuel did not receive word of the death until 1869 and the land was given to Sarah and her new husband, John Peck. Newell, William Sr.'s widow, entered into an agreement with John Peck on July 5, 1841 in which she gave up all her right, title, and interest to the farm to John Peck on condition that he pay the arrears of rent due, that she would have the right to reside on the land during her natural life, she would keep two cows for her own use, and he would not sign a lease of the farm during her lifetime without her consent. Newell signed the agreement with her signature, John Peck made his mark, and Mr. D.S. Rennie witnessed it.

As the land was sold on April 13, 1865, without an indication of Newell's consent, this gives us an approximate date of her death. __________________

Beaconsfield Heritage Foundation, Charlottetown, PEI, Cardex listed as source for William Sr.'s death information. In 1987, Jean Lowe (wife of Sam III) asked staff at Beaconsfield about where the information had been obtained. Unfortunately they did not record the source and did not know. However, a letter (Lowe letters in possession of Eleanor Mary Lowe) from Samuel Lowe (1808) to William Lowe (1811) dated 13 Apr 1869 responding to news of William's (1781) death from a letter his sister Martha Lowe Smith wrote in 1841.

In addition, a bill was received and paid by Wm. Lowe Jr. to Wm Pipperell (Pippwell) for digging a grave, breaking ground and acting as poll (sic) bearer, dated 1841. This bill in possession of Eleanor Lowe, Charlottetown. When Sam J.S. and Jean were in Charlottetown in September, 1991, they found this record of William Pepperell's death in the Jan. 23, 1841 issue of the Charlottetown Colonial Herald "Died on Thurs. last, the 19th instant, Mr. William Pepperell, of this town, aged 77 years. For the last 26 years he filled the office of Sexton to St. Paul's Church during which period he had the opportunity of witnessing the last ceremony performed over some hundreds of his fellow mortals. "Ashes to Ashes. Dust to Dust."

It seems fairly certain that the source of William Low's death was the Charlottetown manuscript.

4. Samuel LOWE [750] (William Sr. 1) was born on 15 Jun 1808 in ENG, UK and was baptized on 3 Jul 1808 in Aylsham, Norfolk, ENG, UK.

General Notes: From Jean Lowe family history book, information gathered from Lowe letters:

"In July of 1831, Samuel (1808) left Bungay, Suffolk, for Aylsham and worked for Bartrum for 2 years. He became so disgusted with his 'proceedings' that he went to Wisbeach, Cambry and Shove, and worked for J. Isley for 3 years. Isley was a wonderful 'master' to work for.

Samuel left Wisbeach in 1834 for Nottingham to work for a large builder there by the name of Patterson. Patterson was a Scotsman. Samuel stayed there for 3 years, leaving in 1837 to work for George Myers, a London builder constructing a new church in Nottingham. Samuel worked there for 8 months before being promoted to head foreman for the London builder in various parts of the country.

He traveled extensively in this position going from London, where the builder had his 'establishment' near Westminster Abbey to various jobs around the country. The last job for Patterson was a contract for 16,000 pounds in Kent among the hop grounds. When Samuel had to do business for Patterson, he traveled by rails which was quite a treat for him.

Another Patterson contract that Samuel did was a house in Wooege Mews, Greenwich, where King Charles II had lived. He described it as a fine mansion and in 1869 it was a Sailors Hospital. It seemed that the Greenwich Pentioners with their three-peaked hats and blue waistcoats and coats with yellow buttons were from there. In the Sailors Hospital, Lord Nelson's coat was displayed in a glass case, showing where the ball passed through the white satin lining leaving the blood stained marks behind.

In 1859, Samuel went to the Isle of Wight to work for a farmer for 6 months. The Queen had a splendid castle there called the Osborne Castle.

Samuel then moved to Warrington where he started a builder business. Apparently there was much competition there and Samuel gave the business up. He was heavily taxed because of new streets in Warrington and fought with the city about it, but he did have 7 years in which to pay at 5 per cent.

He and his wife operated a boot and horseshoe shop with a cigar store adjoining. They called them the Twin Shops. Business in 1869 was very slack. As a result Samuel accepted the Clerk of the Works job with the Waterworks Company of Warrington to work on the extensive water works plan which was getting underway. He accepted the job at two guineas per week."

"The death occurred in the city yesterday morning, of Eliza Sentner, aged 93 years, widow of the late William Lowe, who died in 1886, in the 87th year of his age. Deceased, who was born in Charlottetown, was the daughter of the late Caleb Sentner, a United Empire Loyalist and the first jailor in Queen's County. He died at the age of 110. Despite her advanced years the deceased had enjoyed good health until within three months ago, when she became ill with stomach trouble. Thanks to a strong constitution she rallied and had apparently recovered when a fortnight ago there set in a relapse which proved fatal. She leaves to mourn two sons, Henry and Samuel, of the firm of Lowe Bros., and thirteen grandchildren. The funeral takes place on Sunday at 3 p.m. to the People's Cemetery. The deceased will be interred in the burial clothes made in 1839. In those years it was the custom to have such clothing made and laid away until the time came for their use. Such examples of longevity, the father living to the age of 110 and the daughter to the age of 93, are rare, even in Prince Edward Island. Mrs. Lowe's sister, Mrs. Mabey lived to see her one hundredth year. A brother is still living in good health at the age of 80 years."

Burial Notes: St. Peter's Cathedral Anglican Cemetery, St. Peter's Road.

General Notes: Story from Jean Lowe family history book:

"Some of Walter's expertise was in woodworking and some of his time was spent in the Lowe shop making furniture. Located at 238 Hillsboro is a chair carrying his signature. Walter was a builder having learned his trade while working with his father William. He was also part of the firm of Lowe Bros. with his brother George, and two half-brothers, Henry and Samuel. In 1876 Walter left the firm. There may have been strained feelings about it as there is correspondence between Walter and Henry suggesting that the books be audited by at least two arbitrators in order to settle the matter of Walter leaving the firm. One of Walter's first buildings built when he went on his own was a house for Hyndman who later sold it and moved to Edmonton for his health. Walter also bid on and won the contract for the new insane Asylum. Unfortunately there were several problems with the architectural drawings and this project became a long and costly affair which proved disastrous for Walter. The complete history of it is in the Lowe file at the Public Archives of PEI."

Walter married Mary Jane WELDON [811] [MRIN: 260] on 29 Aug 1864 in Cavendish, PE, CAN. Mary was born on 26 Aug 1841 in PE, CAN, died on 9 Apr 1929 in Charlottetown, PE, CAN aged 87, and was buried in Charlottetown, PE, CAN.

Death Notes: From The Guardian 21 Jan 1939:

Mr. Henry C. Lowe, one of Charlottetown's oldest citizens, died in hospital yesterday, aged 90, following an illness of several weeks.

Born in Charlottetown in 1849, he was the son of William Lowe, a native of Norfolk England, who came to this country when 21 years old.

Henry Lowe received his early education at Mrs. Hubbard's private school at the Central Academy, which is now known as Prince of Wales College. Mr. Lowe was the last surviving pupil of Mrs. Hubbard's School. He was a graduate of St. Dunstan's University.

When a young man he became associated with his brother, Samuel, who predeceased him 12 years ago, and the contracting firm of H. and S. Lowe was formed. The two brothers constructed many of the prominent buildings in the Island as well as houses. Structures erected by them in Charlottetown included the Prince of Wales College building (destroyed by fire several years ago), St. Paul's Church, Rectory and Parish Hall, the Central Christian Church, the Heartz Memorial Hall, the Davis & Fraser plant, the Protestant Orphanage, the Macdonald Consolidated School, the building of the enlarged Dalton Sanatorium by the Government at North Wiltshire, the Bank of Montreal in Charlottetown, the Provincial Sanatorium, the Desbrisay block, the Cameron block, the Hodgson Memorial Chapel in connection with St. Peter's Cathedral, the Connaught Apartments, and S. A. MacDonald's store.

Last summer, Mr. & Mrs. Henry Lowe, the former Mary Elizabeth Mortimer of Charlottetown, celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary. They received a message from King George and Queen Elizabeth conveying congratulations.

In politics Mr. Lowe was a liberal. Although his judgement, advice and intelligence were often used by the party, he never sought political honors for himself. He was usually a delegate at Liberal conventions.

A life-long member of St. Paul's Anglican Church, he was a vestryman for many years.

Besides his widow, Mr. Lowe is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Parker Ritchie, Mrs. Waldron Prowse, and Miss Elsie of Charlottetown, and two sons, Louis S. of Winnipeg, and T. Weston of Charlottetown.

Death Notes: Article from the Charlottetown Morning Guardian 15 Dec 1926, Page 3:

Passing of Mr. Samuel Lowe

Mr. Samuel Lowe, one of the best known citizens of Charlottetown passed away at his residence, corner of Hillsboro and Euston Streets, at 6:45 yesterday morning.

He had reached his 76th year. Until four years ago he enjoyed robust health and manly vigor. Then he was stricken with illness and laid aside from the active duties of life. Although able to move about the house yet, it was evident that his days of activity were over.

Ten days ago, Mr. Lowe took a weak turn, and he steadily, notwithstanding all that could be done, grew weaker, until his death opened the portal for his departure to the Better Land.

The late Mr. Lowe was born in Charlottetown, a son of William Lowe and Eliza Sentner. He was a contractor and builder, and his two sons, namely, Samuel and Henry, followed in his footsteps, and engaged in the same occupation.

The name of Lowe Brothers is known amongst our builders and people generally. Many fine structures and houses innumerable here testify to their skill as contractor and builders, their honesty and integrity in business, and they will stand as lasting monuments to their memory while the capital of the province endures.

Mr. Samuel Lowe not only was a builder in a material sense, but he was also a builder of character. He enjoyed the friendship and regard of all, and deservedly so. He was that type of citizen of which any community might well be proud.--- a prominent Mason, a Son of England, a member of the Odd Fellows, and also an active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. In his daily walk and conversation he exemplified the genuine Christian.

His wife predeceased him nearly four years ago. From this union were born: Horace, Manager of the Bank of Rainy River, Ontario, Samuel, now farming at Lake Saskatoon, Alberta, Mrs. E.J. Duffy and Miss Eleanor Lowe, teacher at Prince of Wales College, both of Charlottetown. Three sons have passed away, John, Will and Vernon. John, who was a member of the First Mounted Rifles in the Canadian Forces, was killed in the War. One brother is also left, Mr. Henry C. Lowe.

Thus, one by one the older residents of our fair city are being numbered with the great majority. They have left us legacies of useful lives and memories that they ever laboured in the great Task Master's eye.

Among the buildings erected by Lowe Brothers in this city are the following:-- Cameron Block, The Desbrisay Block, owned by Hon. George E. Hughes, St. Paul's Church, Rectory and Parish Hall, Bank of Montreal, The Royal Bank, Central Christian Church, Heartz Memorial Hall, Fennel & Chandler's Store, Hodgson Memorial Chapel, Davis & Fraser's Cold Storage Plant, Protestant Orphanage, St. James' Manse, D. Gordon Block, Prince of Wales College, brick warehouse and large addition to Roger's Hardware Store, and residences of the Manager of the Bank of Montreal, Mrs. John Richards, James Paton, Arthur Peake, Alex. Scott, Mrs. Duff, Wilfred Boulter, the late C.D. Rankin, George E. Hughes, Gordon Hughes, and many others.

Burial Notes: LARGE FUNERAL YESTERDAY

The funeral of the late Samuel Lowe was held from his late residence 238 Hillsboro Street, leaving the house at 2:15 for St. Paul's Church. The Masons and Sons of England preceded the hearse, which was followed by a large concourse. The pallbearers were: Messrs. S. P. Paoli; H. Dingwell, W. P. Doull, K. J. Martin, Norman Campbell and W. B. Robertson. In the absence of the Rev. H. D. Raymond, Rector of St. Paul's, the service was taken by the Rev. Canon Malone of St. Peter's Cathedral, assisted by Mr. F. C. Johnson, lay reader in charge of Milton Parish. Interment was in the People's Cemetery.

General Notes: Article from the magazine, The Canadian Architect And Builder, Regular Edition, Vol. XIV.--No.1, January, 1901:

MESSRS. H. & S. LOWE, CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. "Among the largest building firms in the maritime provinces is that of H. & S. Lowe, of Charlottetown, P.E.I., and they are now by far the largest in that province.

Mr. Wm. Lowe came to the island in 1830 from his native home in Norfolk, Eng. He had learned his trade in the old country, and took up building when he arrived.

His two sons, whose portraits we publish with this article, learned their trade with him and went into partnership 25 years ago. Mr. Henry C. Lowe is the senior of the firm and is 52 years of age. His brother Samuel Lowe, is but two years younger.

Both are married, and live in a pleasant new double residence most comfortably finished and tastefully furnished, on the corner of Hillsboro and Heuston (sic) streets.

The firm has enlarged its business from time to time, until it now employs a large number of men permanently. They are intending to acquire in the spring a large and well equipped wood-working plant in the city, which will give them much better facilities.

They have constructed some of the largest and most important buildings in the province. Some that might be mentioned are the Cameron Block on the south side of Queen's Square; the Rogers building, Queen St.; St. Paul's Anglican church, in Queen's Square; and the brick Roman Catholic church at Fort Augustus, which cost $20, 000. The two first named were done in the past two years. They remodelled the interiors of the First Methodist and St. James' Presbyterian churches in the city, and have erected a large number of fine residences in the immediate vicinity of their own home. They were the builders of the pork packing buildings, which they secured in a contract of $50,000. The contract for these structures, which were briefly described in the December issue of the CANADIAN ARCHITECT AND BUILDER, was signed in May, 1897, and they were turned over complete in November of that year.

Last summer the firm erected nine dwelling houses, a brick church, an extension to the Davies Hotel, an hotel at Stanhope, and other buildings. The Stanhope hotel, which was of wood and cost $6000, was wanted for the tourist trade. It was put up, plastered, painted and turned over for use in 21 days.

Work was recently begun on enlargements and repairs to the city drill shed which will cost about $10,000. The firm are now completing a residence for E.H. Beer which is costing $2,000; also one for Robert Palmer at same cost. They have just begun work on the new Apothecaries' hall or Desbrisay building, which is a $14,000 contract. The firm feel confident that building will be good during the coming summer and are preparing for good orders.

From the book, "Charlottetown, The Life in Its Buildings", by Irene L. Rogers:

"238-240 Hillsborough Street

Lowe Bros. were active contractors in Charlottetown in the latter part of the 19th and early 20th centuries. House after house was built by them, and for several they also furnished plans. They built for their own use a dwelling that the newspapers of 1875 described as Henry and Samuel Lowe's tasteful double house on the corner of Euston and Hillsborough Streets. The restrained detailing, consisting only of bracketed hoods over the windows and small fretwork in the peak of the dormers, adds to the feeling of strength the house gives. It has provided most attractive living accommodation for the Lowe family from the date of the building until the present time."

Samuel married Mary Ellen STRAMBERG [1] [MRIN: 1], daughter of Nathaniel Philip STRAMBERG [853] and Elizabeth "Eliza" HUDSON [864], on 5 May 1880 in Charlottetown, PE, CAN. Mary was born on 16 Jan 1860 in Milton, PE, CAN, was baptized on 22 Jul 1860 in Milton, PE, CAN, died on 23 Mar 1923 in Charlottetown, PE, CAN aged 63, and was buried in Charlottetown, PE, CAN.

Baptism Notes: She was baptized by I.S. Smith in St. John's Anglican Church.

Death Notes: Stramberg Bible, Deaths, says; "15 Minutes before twelve Friday night March 23rd 1923."

From The Guardian newspaper:

IN MEMORIAM

Mrs. Samuel Lowe

Mr. Samuel Lowe and family will have the deep sympathy of all in the death of Mrs. Lowe as previously announced, occurred last Friday evening.

Mrs. Lowe, who was 62 years of age, had been an invalid for the past eighteen years, and she passed away peacefully as one who falleth asleep.

She was a most estimable Christian lady of admirable qualities of mind and heart.

She was a member of St. Paul's Church and before her illness took a leading part in its various activities. Her maiden name was Mary Ellen Stramberg and she was a daughter of the late N. P. Stramberg, the well known musician.

She leaves to mourn besides a sorrowing husband, two sons, Horace, Manager of the Canadian Bank of Commerce, Elgin, Manitoba. Samuel Rankin of Lake Saskatoon, Alberta, and two daughters Mrs. E.J. Duffy at Caney Kansas and Miss Elinor (sic) at home. She is survived by one brother Philip in Australia, and three sisters, Mrs. William MacCallum of St. Eleanors, Miss Anne Stramberg and Mrs. Samuel Burns of Somerville, Mass: also a half brother James Stramberg in Charlottetown and a half sister, Mrs. Leonard Fraser, Winnipeg.

Her son Horace is expected home on Wednesday night and the funeral will likely be held on Thursday next.

To the bereaved relatives, the Guardian extends deep and sincere sympathy.

Burial Notes: People's Cemetery.

General Notes: Mary Ellen was not physically well during the latter part of her married life, having suffered a stroke at about age 45. Her sister Elizabeth Stramberg (Aunt Lizzie to her nephews and nieces), spent a lot of time in the Lowe household nursing Mary Ellen and helping to raise the Lowe children.

122 M i. William Henry "Will" LOWE [1251] was born on 29 Dec 1880 in Charlottetown, PE, CAN, was baptized on 22 Dec 1882 in Charlottetown, PE, CAN, and died about 1916 aged about 36. He was usually called Will.

Baptism Notes: He was baptized by Rev. K. MacLennan, at the same time as his brother Vernon, at St. James Church.

General Notes: Constable, RNWMP. His regimental number with the Royal North-West Mounted Police was 3524. He served at Onion Lake, Battleford, Lesser Slave Lake, and Edmonton. He signed up for a five year term on 23 Mar 1900, in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, and took his discharge, time expired, on 22 Mar 1905, at Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta.

Story from Jean Lowe family history book:

Little is known of the early days of William Henry Lowe. The young Lowe boys had a reputation for getting into scraps and as the eldest, William was probably the toughest as well.

Ann (Duffy) Campbell told a story told to her by her mother, Marion (the fifth Lowe child): "The four boys were scrubbed, dressed in their Sunday best and told to wait on the front verandah while their mother got ready for church. When she came down, four dirty, dishevelled--but happy, grinning boys greeted her. "Mama, we whipped the Power boys!" (a family of Irish Catholics down the street-known as the town toughies)

Will's handwriting was very clear and descriptive as indicated in the letter he wrote his Aunt Lizzie when he was 13. At that time he was working at a job for Hol Haszard and earning $1.50 per week.

In January, 1896, when Will was 14 he was spending some time working on the Church (St. Paul's Anglican) as part of an H&S Lowe crew. It was also in January that Samuel wrote to Lizzie describing an attack which Will's mother, Mary Ellen had and the relief he felt when the doctor said it was nothing dangerous: "Lizzie, what a relief those words were to me. The poor boys sitting around with scared faces, big rough Will that respects nobody......."

In 1899 and 1900, Will was quite despondent and not doing well at the job he was in. Vernon was very interested in the building trade and was taking a contractor course in the International Correspondence School of Scranton, P.A. Horrie liked his job at the bank and was the proud owner of a horse and buggy. Will, though, was not settled and happy. He longed for adventure, the opportunity to make a great deal of money, and freedom from the 'establishment'. In 1899 his mother wrote to Aunt Lizzie expressing Will's lack of commitment to his job.

Will seized his opportunity to head West to find adventure by applying to the North West Mounted Police recruiting team that visited Charlottetown in March, 1900. He officially 'joined up' on Friday, March 23, 1900, for a 5 year term. His mother, Mary Ellen wrote to her sister Lizzie, to tell her about it: "he told me about it, but his father did not learn of it until he had gone. It is just as well to let him go as he was dissatisfied and not attending to work very well."

The basic training in Regina passed uneventfully except for an escort of prisoners to a gaol (Will's spelling) near Winnipeg. Will's mother was pleased with his transfer to Battleford, Saskatchewan, by May 1st, as the local newspapers carried news of a diptheria outbreak in the Mounted Police force in Regina and Will left before it started.

After three months in Battleford and a letter from Horrie telling about their Uncle Charlie's (Mary Ellen's brother) exploits in the Philippines, Will, in a letter to Aunt Lizzie writes of a desire to go there too, and talks of saving his money to buy his release so that he can head into the Western States. Christmas, 1900, finds Will in Onion Lake, Saskatchewan, NWT, on detachment duty. Onion Lake is a lonely outpost with 3 white men as well as the Police there. The detachment has 3 men and Will is designated the cook.

From Onion Lake, Will goes in January 1901 to Edmonton, where he is quartered in a lovely brick house. The O.C. in charge is Major Belcher. While in Edmonton, Will tries to draw duty in South Africa to fight in the Boer War and although Major Belcher intercedes on his behalf, the quota had been reached of police selected. Will doesn't really like the Edmonton posting - it is not far enough away from civilization to suit him and he doesn't feel the NCO's are as good as those in Saskatchewan.

By the end of January, though, Will is on the move. During 1901 he is often back and forth between Edmonton, Onion Lake, and Battleford before being transferred to Lesser Slave Lake in June, 1902. He writes to his Aunt Lizzie from Lesser Slave Lake on the 28th. The actual travel time was 14 days with an occasional day of rest. He arrived in time to participate in the July 1st Sports Days which he enjoyed. The following year, Will took a more active role in the Sports Days and managed to win first place in the running long jump, 100-yard dash and standing long jump and to place second in the standing high jump.

When Will finished his 5 year contract with the NWMP in the spring of 1905 he was still serving at the Lesser Slave Lake detachment. A letter to his mother advises her at the end of March, 1905, that he is leaving the police force and Mary Ellen writes to Lizzie on Apr. 9, 1905, that "Will has left the force. He is going at bush logging." Then, in early May, Marion Lowe writes to Lizzie with this news of Will, "another trial over that murder - Will has to stay to attend.." (Editor's note - Could this murder be the crime which involved the murder of Edward Hayward at Lesser Slave Lake on September 17, 1904, by his partner, Charles King? Parts of Hayward's body were found in a campfire made by King and he was convicted at Edmonton in 1905. It was felt at the time that the successful conclusion of the case was brought about by the hard work of the Lesser Slave Lake detachment.)

About 1906, Will became the trader in charge of the Revillon Freres at Lake Saskatoon. He fell in love with the area which is reminiscent of Queen's County in Prince Edward Island with its low-lying hills and the fields sloping down to the water, and obtained a homestead south of the lake, at NW2-72-8-6(W6).

While he was agent for Revillon Freres, he also had the responsibility of taking affidavits and acting as Registrar of Vital Statistics.

On Apr. 15, 1911, Will was logging in the bush and wrote to tell his father about his winter and when he would start seeding his land.

Will did not stay with Revillon Freres all the time he resided at Lake Saskatoon. For a time he was Manager of Grande Prairie Lumber Company. During the whole of his time in Lake Saskatoon, though, he worked on the July sports days committees and participated in the sport of hockey in the winter and baseball in the summer. He was also a member of the first United Farmers of Alberta and at a meeting held on July 18, 1911, O.H. Johnson, William Lowe and R.C. Lossing were appointed as the committee to post notices for the letting of a contract to build a road from Beaverlodge to Lake Saskatoon.

Ten years was a long time for restless Will to stay in one place. He had once written to his Aunt Lizzie that he would like to move about every three months and that each place should be at least 500 miles from the last.

This is an historical account of William Henry Lowe's life at Lake Saskatoon. Material for the article came from the Isabel Campbell Archival Collection, in Grande Prairie, and was prepared and written by Joan Yates. The account was broadcast on CJXX Radio in Grande Prairie, on 10 Feb 1981.

"The W.H. LOWE MYSTERY

About 1906, an ex-North West Mounted Policeman, William Henry Lowe, became the trader in charge of the Revillon Freres at Lake Saskatoon. This young Prince Edward Island born man soon fell in love with the beautiful Peace River countryside and obtained a homestead south of the lake. As agent at the trading post, he did not have time to work his land so sometimes hired it done. One person who recalled having done so was Jim Crerar, who turned over 85 acres for Lowe with three horses and a walking plow.

William did have time to help put up hay for his little herd of cattle, though, for pioneer Bill Grant recorded in his diary that William Lowe had been one of a group who had hayed on the meadows at the west end of Bear Lake during the 1906 to 1911 years.

Other Lake Saskatoon settlers recalled Billy Lowe as an active sportsman, playing on the local ball team in the summer and taking a leading part in winter hockey games as goalee.

For ten years he resided on the Grande Prairie, and then in September, 1916, the following news of him appeared in the Grande Prairie Herald: "William Lowe of Lake Saskatoon, who left last April with the intention of returning in time for the Frontier Exhibition in July, has mysteriously disappeared and despite every effort put forth by the mounted police and friends of the missing man, no definite idea has yet been gained to his possible whereabouts.

It has been ascertained, however, that Lowe spent several days in Edmonton after leaving Grande Prairie, and it has been repeatedly stated by a number of local men that they saw and talked with him in the capital city just previous to his disappearance. The police state that Lowe left a sum of money for safe keeping at an Edmonton hotel and it is also claimed, though not confirmed, that in Calgary there is money which he left with a friend pending his return from Banff, supposedly.

Whether Mr. Lowe actually visited Banff is doubtful, the police claiming that they can find no trace of him there. At one time it was rumoured that a person answering to Lowe's description had been seen in Montana but this report has not been verified. The authorities state that possibly Lowe had been murdered or some sort of foul play has been the occasion for his sudden disappearance," the Herald concluded.

Apparently little more was discovered about this pioneer. One other story said he disappeared while trying to enlist in Edmonton. Another said he possibly did enlist under an assumed name and was killed during the war. Still another suggested he was fair game for an angry bootlegger's bullet, since he had at one time donned his ex-policeman's uniform and confiscated moonshine as a prank. The mystery remains unsolved over 60 years later. After the war, his brother Sam came to the Peace River country and settled on William's land. Sam had been badly wounded in World War I and he and his wife, Kate, hoped the good fresh air and farm life would improve his health. They lived in the Lake Saskatoon district for about 16 years, raising a family of five children. The first-born was named William."

He never married and had no children.

The working copy of the pattern is in Eleanor Lowe's possession. When Vernon Lowe died of pneumonia in 1905, the heart seemed to go out of Samuel. Eleanor Lowe, Alexa Prowse and Jean Lowe were talking about Vernon's death one day and Alexa said, "Do you remember the day he was buried, Eleanor? It was so cold and snowy. We were having a blizzard and they had to take him to the cemetery on a sled.""

From: "Outstanding Women of Prince Edward Island", Zonta Club of Charlottetown, 1981, printed by Williams & Crue, Summerside, P.E.I. Pages 52-54:

"Eleanor Mary Lowe

Of Loyalist descent. Eleanor Mary Lowe was born in Charlottetown, the daughter of Samuel Lowe and his wife, Mary Ellen Stramberg. There is little doubt that the circumstances of her early childhood provided the fertile climate in which her innate talent would grow and flourish. The youngest of a family of seven, she reflects ... ''It was almost like being an only child, there were ten years between me and the youngest of the other family members. She can scarcely remember her mother, who died when Eleanor was very young. Her father was a builder, who with his familiar landmarks of Charlottetown and outlying districts, citing the beautiful edifice of St. Paul's Church; All Souls Chapel of St. Peter's Cathedral, St. Patrick's Cathedral in Fort Augustus; much of the former Prince of Wales College, to name only a few. The young Eleanor studied piano briefly, learning to develop an appreciation for music. She was later given violin lessons... 'But they didn't 'take'," she concludes with a smile. She also studied elocution and participated in plays in the old Opera House, later the Prince Edward Theatre; and in recitals at the Strand Theatre above the old market. "I also had dance lessons! ... How I loved to dance!" she muses... "And there were gifts, sometimes... paints...and always books; we were surrounded with books!" But always, her first love was art, and at an early age of eleven, she began the first of many years of private study with Mrs. Isobel Fraser, a well known Island artist of that time. Reflecting on those early years, she recalls ... "I believe the children of today have, perhaps, more advantages than we had, but they have many more pressures; so much time is spent on busses, going to and from school; there is pressure from sports, and television takes a portion of their time. They have so little time to dream… to explore their own creative ability… to discover what is within." She speaks with the same empathy and concern that was always evident in her teaching. Her philosophy regarding teaching children is that they can learn anything providing it is presented correctly and they are not told it is difficult.

Eleanor attended Model School. Prince Street School, and Prince of Wales College. where she was urged to follow and develop an obvious aptitude for teaching, with a view to the teaching of school art. This led to a year's attendance at the Mon Museum of Fine Arts tinder the instruction of the celebrated Canadian Artist, William Brymmer. Here she was awarded a scholarship.

The next year was spent at the Ontario College of Art, Toron studying under Arthur Lismer, who was then working out new methods of teaching child art. After this, half a term was spent teaching drawing at Prince of Wales College, then back to the Ontario College of Art. The Model School was first included in the art program, then the first Year Classes of P.W.C. always included the Teacher Training Program. When this program was extended to a full-time course, the Art Program was included. In the Sixties the Art Course was enlarged to include Second Year Students, thus enabling those with special talent to prepare for entry into Art School.

During the Summers, Eleanor would attend Summer Schools; a course in oil painting at Tatamagouche; one at Madoc in Ontario, and a course in portrait painting in London, England.

From its beginning, Eleanor was a member of the Art Society of Prince Edward Island, and for many years its President. She is a founding member of the Canadian Society for Education Through Art. (CSEA), Custodian of Art-to-Schools, a program of Con Centre of the Arts, and is also on the selection commit of this group. She was awarded the Canadian Medal in 1967 for Participation in the Arts. She is a member and Past President of the Charlottetown Business and Professional Women's Club. Other memberships include the Charlottetown Camera Club, The Heritage Society and Unit 21 (Retired Civil Service). She is also Past President of the Natural History Society.

Eleanor has kept in touch with many of her former Students and speaks with affection as she recounts their achievements. They in turn speak of her with respect and gratitude. They remember her interest and gentle guidance ... giving them the basics, then en each of them to explore and experiment to realize their own potential. Many have gone on to interesting careers. She speaks of one talented student who is now in Theatrical Design; another who is Curator of a Gallery and one who is a painter of Portraits… the list is a long one.

Eleanor lives in the spacious old home on Hillsboro Street: the house where she was born. Her living room reflects her love of nature. On the walls a modest display of some of her paintings: landscapes… seascapes… a still life or two. A lush violet turns its velvet leaves and blossoms toward the sun. A natural arrangement of dried flowers graces a table, a piece of sculpture stands on a table in the hall. "I don't paint so much these days, I seem to have 'hit a dry spell'… a term with which all artists are only too familiar. But one day soon Eleanor will paint again, it is inevitable. Art is her life. Often called upon as a judge and critic, the little girl from long ago whose violin lessons 'didn't take' continues to serve through her life long dedication to the arts.

Story from Jean Lowe family history book: "When Eleanor reflected on her early life as the youngest of seven children, she said, "It was almost like being an only child, there were ten years between me and the other family members. Some of the older boys had already left home and I never did meet Will."

As a child she studied piano briefly and later had violin lessons....."but they didn't take", she stated in an interview. She studied elocution and participated in plays in the old Opera House and in recitals in the old Strand Theatre. Eleanor loved the dancing lessons for she loved to dance.

Her talent in art showed early and she began the first of many years of private study when she was 11 years old. Her first teacher was a well-known Island artist, Isobel Fraser. Eleanor also loved to teach children and this became her profession. In order to teach art, she studied at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts under Canadian artist, William Brymmer. The following year she attended the Ontario College of Art and attended that College in the subsequent year. During the summer she would also study. Oil painting at Tatamagouche, another at Madoc in Ontario and a course in portrait painting in London, England.

During this time she taught Art at the Prince of Wales College and was active in the community in various art groups as well as the Business and Professional Women's Club, the Charlottetown Camera Club, the Heritage Society, Unit 21 of Retired Civil Service and the Natural History Society."

She never married and had no children.

Mrs. Fitzpatrick was a native of Prince Edward Island and made her home there until 35 years ago when she came to this country. She was the widow of William Henry Fitzpatrick, is survived by six children, Mrs. Charles Gay of this city, Mrs. John MacPherson of Brockton, William of this city, John of Woodville Mills, P.E.I., James of Newport, Me. and George Ball of Alberta, Saskatchewan. Marriage Notes: A marriage seal was made by William FITZPATRICK of Egmont Bay and Charles DWYER of Summerside in the sum of £100. This was made on the condition that their was no known impediment to the marriage of William FITZPATRICK and Maria BALLS. He was a batchelor of Egmont Bay. She was a spinster of Lot 15. Lot 15 appears to be that part of Prince County running from the coast north-east of Rock Point, south-east through Higgins Road, St. Phillipe and onwards down route 129, straight across route 124 and turning towards St. Raphael along the unimproved road. It carries on through St. Raphael to Muddy Creek and then comes south to Sunbury Point. It must be noted that Maria Balls was born in New Bungay and baptised in Milton at St. John's Anglican Church. These two locations are in Queens County quite close to route 2 on the way to Charlottetown. At present there is nothing to connect her to Lot 15. The seal was signed, sealed and delivered in the presence of Thomas HUNT and William FITZPATRICK and Charles DWYER both made their marks. The marriage actually took place on 26th.April 1865. Harry C. Green, J.P. held the licence. The witnesses were Charles and Ellen Dione. The following notes were recorded on the file in the Archives. June 8th.1865 Charles Irving Surrogate Marriage Book 8 page 273 1862---1867.

Burial Notes: Mount Pleasant Cemetery

General Notes: In 1882 William was a deep sea fisherman. There is some discrepancy as to Hannah Sarah's age. On the 1881 census she appears as 3 months. In 1891, she is 10 years. However, in the archives she is listed as having a birthday 12/8/1882 and as being registered in 1941. Also present on the 1881 census is a Lyde Ann, aged 7 years. It is not clear as to whether she is William's daughter or a relation. In 1881,the family is of Lot 33 and Roman Catholic. In 1891, they were living in Charlottetown Royalty. William is down as Church of England and Maria as Roman Catholic. All the children were C. of E. This may well be the wrong way round as Maria was christened at St. John's Anglican in Milton. Census return for 1881 gives William's age as 36, giving a birth date of 1845. Census return for 1891 gives William's age as 48, giving a birth date of 1843.

A boy named Joseph FITZPATRICK who was shot on Friday eve. near Queen's Arms about three miles from Charlottetown, P.E.I. died Saturday night at 11:30 o'clock. - Halifax 'Chronicle' (see original)

General Notes: On Oct. 16th, 1885 ten year old Joseph Fitzpatrick, the son of William & Maria (Ball) Fitzpatrick, was going for the cow. There were two young men, who were unknown to the boy, driving up the road in a horse and wagon and one yelled out, "I will shoot you, you buggar!" and then drew out a shotgun and shot the boy twice. The boy was hit once in the chest and once in the abdomen and he screeched and began running home. The young men continued on laughing. Joseph went home and undressed himself and put himself to bed, where his parents found him when they came home. The boy was in and out of consciousness and was able to give his statement, but he died late Saturday night from the wound to his bowel.

Two young boys were brought before an inquest, but they were exonerated and then they found out who the shooters were. John Fisher, 25, was identified as the "get away driver" and 20 year old Sydney Robinson was sought as the shooter. But Robinson had fled trying to make his way to the USA. He had boarded a schooner in Georgetown but when the ship had to turn around because of bad weather, the sheriff was waiting for him.

The inquest was held and both parents of Joseph testified, as well as many other people. The decision was that Robinson had indeed shot the boy and was bound for trial in January 1886. The first trial saw the judge declare that Robinson shouldn't be charged with murder, but manslaughter since Robinson had testified that he was picking up his employer's shotgun from being fixed and didn't know that it was loaded. He had used a gun cap on the gun to scare the boy, that he was fooling around trying to scare the boy - he had no idea that the boy had been struck. The jury at the second trial found Robinson not guilty and ruled it an accident.

General Notes: A Personal History-

In this little book dedicated to travels, it may not be out of place to record some of my own. Which, while not extensive nor exciting could be designated from the cradle to the grave.

I was born in the town of Amherst, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia. August 8th 1870 and was named by my parents George Benjamin Smith which name I seldom use in full.

My father's name was Edward S. Smith of English descent. He was born in either Yarmouth England or Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, his family lived in both towns.

My mother was Adelaide Davis Smith of English and Scotch descent. She was born in Five Islands, Colchester County, Nova Scotia. My family all were members of the church of England.

We moved from Amherst to River Hebert when I was three or four years of age. Then when I was five years of age my father who was in the butcher business with his father and brothers, failed in business.

And under the rigorous debtor laws of the times was sold out. Everything of value was sold for debts, and my father moved uss to the little coal mining town of Joggins.

This was a country of hard work and small wages. We resided in for may years in what can be called near poverty.

I entered the public schools between five and six years of age, and when barely eleven years old, I entered the employ of the coal company as a slate picker. I worked for coal companies the most of the time until I was twenty four years old.

During this period of my life I secured some schooling during the winters. And at different times became acquainted with the timber and lumber trade. Also with life on sailing vessels and spent some time in blacksmith and mechanics trade.

During this time I was employed mainly in mines in Joggins and Spring Hill where a great explosion occurred in 1891 killing 125 men and boys.

At an early age I found a temperance society called the Independent order of Good Templars which had quite an influence on my whole life.

At the age of eighteen years I joined the Church of England at Amherst, N.S.

At the age of 21 I became a member of the Loyal order of Grangemen and was an active member for many years.

About this time I became aware of the handicap which lack of education imposes on one, and at once tried to do something about it.

I attended night mining school and prepared myself for examination for mine boss.

I passed a successful examination, and the next year passed for underground manager.

The next year I began a course in the old Scranton School of mines which later became the great I.G.S.

The next year I became instructor in the Provincial mining schools, which at that was quite an honor.

During these years my life had known very little pleasure as we are used to it today, but certainly we had some pleasures. But life was a hard and serious business for all of us.

We had our church socials and tea meetings, our local ball games and our annual Lodge parade.

And the amusements we invented as we went along. We had plenty of fishing in the summer and skating in the winter.

Our social lives were controlled a great deal by our church and lodge connections.

Of course young people in all times have known how to get some enjoyment out of life.

The winter I was sixteen years old we moved to a place named Two Rivers where the first ocean going timber raft was launched. As I was interested in this construction, so will tell something of it.

At that time (1886) the Eastern coast towns were being built up at a great rate. The foundations for the immense warehouses, docks and wharves were laid on piles driven into the mud and earth by great pile drivers.

Of course this used great quantities of timber and cost plenty of money.

A New York engineer named James Leary got the idea of shipping the timber in large quantities instead of in small sailing vessels as was the custom then.

So he came to Two Rivers as a suitable place for his experiment.

A runway was constructed which was four parallel tracks of large square timbers. A cradle was constructed as for building a ship in.

Camps were established for the timbermen and trees were cut and hauled out by horses and sleds to the site of the raft.

These logs were carefully stowed in the cradle by experienced stevedors. Between the large timbers were stored long, small diameter poles called clothes piles and used for scaffolds.

The whole was interlaced with small birches, which were later used to make warehouse and stable brooms of the small branches.

Newspaper article: G.B. Smith

G.B. Smith, deputy mine inspector of Utah, was born in Amherst, Nova Scotia, August 8, 1870. He is self-educated and acquired the knowledge which carried him up to his present position by hard work and extensive reading. When but 11 years of age he commecnced his career as a coal miner and ever since, with but little deviation, he has been associated with that industry. From the time he first went to work in a coal mine he has filled every position from trapper to mine superintendent, gaining advancement strictly by merit. As a coal miner he became familiar with the mines of Nova Scotia, Alberta, British Columbia, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming and New Mexico. In Utah he has been identified with the Utah Fuel company, and for a short time with the American Fuel company. In Colorado he was identified with the Colorado Fuel & Iron company and the Royal Fuel company. He first came west in 1895, locating in Wyoming.

As deputy mine inspector Mr. Smith reflects a splendid knowledge of the mining industry, and the practical work which he followed for so many years particularly qualifies him for the position which he so ably fills.

Mr. Smith was married in 1900 to Miss Ellen C. Mower of Fairview, Utah, and two boys and four girls were the fruit of the union. He has been a member of the Independent Order of Oddfellows since 1898.

George married Ellen Clymenia MOWER [8516] [MRIN: 2928], daughter of Henry MOWER [8517] and Mary Ellen KELSEY [8518], on 24 Dec 1900 in Price, UT, USA. Ellen was born on 19 Mar 1881 in Milborn, UT, USA, died on 21 Feb 1960 in Fairview, UT, USA aged 78, and was buried on 25 Feb 1960 in Fairview, UT, USA.

General Notes: Ellen Clymenia was a tiny woman, well under 5 feet tall. Her son-in-law Francis Semon Johansen built special cabinets for her kitchen in the Fairview home which were low enough for her to reach and sloped one direction to allow for easier viewing by her to see in.

205 M i. Norman Edward SMITH [8519] was born on 25 Oct 1901 in Clear Creek, UT, USA and died on 26 Aug 1961 aged 59.

General Notes: Brief History of George Benjamin Smith By: Norman E. Smith

When my father was 26 years old, he left his home in Nova Scotia, Canada. He crossed to Canada to work in the coalmines in British Columbia. In 1896 he came to Utah and New Mexico to work in the coalmines. He married my mother Christmas Day 1900.

Most of the information on his family that I have came by word of mouth from him. Father says his grandfather Robert Smith came from England. It seems he came from Yarmouth, England, where the family were ship builders. He took the name Smith from his uncle who adopted him. They lived for a period of time on Prince Edward Island, which is just off the main land of Canada. Later they came to live in Yarmouth in Nova Scotia.

Robert Smith, my grandfather, married Martha Lowe of Five Islands, Canada. During the decade of 1870-1880 they lived in Parrsboro, Nova Scotia, Canada. They had a numerous family.

My father's brother Edward D. Smith, who is dead, married a L.D.S. girl. She was Irene Bradley of Spring City, Utah. He was previously married to a woman from Joggins Mines, Nova Scotia, Canada. She bore him one child, Frank, who was in the Canadian Army in World War I. He died of wounds received in the service of his country. This first wife died prior to his marriage to Irene Bradley. In the year 1905 they, with their children, lived in Joggins Mines, Nova Scotia, where my father (grandfather) and grandmother also lived.

Part of what follows was given my by her. (Irene Bradley Smith) Grandfather's brothers William Smith and John Smith lived in Parrsboro, Nova Scotia in 1905. Thus we have knowledge of great grandfather Robert Smith and his wife Martha Lowe. They had at least seven children, as my grandfather was the seventh child.

John and William had families at Parrsboro. My father was named after two other sons, Benjamin and George. Aunt Nettie had a family genealogy. This represents six of seven known brothers and sisters, rather it represents six of eight known brothers and sisters as grandfather was a seventh child and my father was given the name of Benjamin, who was older and George, who was younger than grandfather. Grandmother Smith, who was Adelaid Davis of Five Islands, Nova Scotia, from an obituary in a local paper of Hardscrabble, we gather that she was a True Blue, belonged to the Rebeccah's Lodge and was a staunch member of the Anglican Church. She died at Hardscrabble. Her daughters were; Mrs. Nellie Bradley of Alberta Canada, Mrs. Edward Durant of Parrsboro, her sons were Frank Smith, who died at Joggins Mines, Nova Scotia, Edward D. Smith who died at Spring City Utah, and George Benjamin Smith (my father) who died at Fairview, Utah. No dates were given. Another obituary on William Smith who was grandfather's brother died at Parrsboro, age 84 of Apoplexy. He was a master ship builder. He had four sons. Robert of New York, Captain Wallace Smith of Parrsboro, Lorned of Amherst, Nova Scotia, and Roy who at the time of his fathers death resided in Mexico. Two daughters, Mrs. Captain Truman Slater of Parrsboro and Mrs. Frank Brown of Amherst. No dates were given but he died before grandfather did as grandfather attended the funeral. Reverend Walter Langston, Rector of St. Georges Church conducted the services. As so many of these men were sea faring men and so many of them were captains of ships, these records might easily be found in the records of ship registrations. Frank Smith, my father's brother was a ships captain and freighted to the states, he was lost at sea in a terrible storm together with two tug boats while towing two million feet of pine to the mills in Maine, USA from Nova Scotia, Canada.

The family was living in Kenilworth, Carbon, UT, at the time of the 1930 Census.

General Notes: Story from Jean Lowe family history book:

"Horace Haszard Lowe was described by his father as being "the best boy on earth", in a letter to Lizzie Stramberg dated 19 Jan 1896. Samuel continued to marvel at what a good boy Horrie was. Horrie read his bible every night of his life (1896) and said his prayers faithfully. Horrie got a job with the Union Bank in Charlottetown and worked conscientiously and saved his money. By the time he was 15 he had already saved enough money to purchase a horse and buggy. Horrie played the violin and was very diligent in his practise. He also marched with the "Boy's Brigade".

Horrie was 18 years old and working at the bank in Montague when his baby sister was born. On a visit home, while the family was discussing what to name her, Horrie suggested Eleanor as a nice name that he had heard in Montague. To his surprise, that is what his parents decided to name her.(story told by Horrie to his nephew, Samuel III, on a visit to Winnipeg in 1974)

In 1902, Horrie, impressed with the adventures of his uncles, Charles and Philip (Stramberg), and his brother Will, wrote to Will suggesting that he (Horrie) should come out west. Will, however, encouraged Horrie to stay with his bank job, advising that the west would have no greater opportunities for him.

Horrie did get transferred to Windsor, Ontario, where he married Ethel Fawcett and after that they spent several years in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan; Athabasca Landing, Alberta; Yorkton, Saskatchewan; and Rainy River, before retiring to Winnipeg. Ethel told of one reunion that the three Lowe brothers, Will, Horrie, and Sam, had while they lived in Athabasca Landing."

Horrie married Ethel Gregg FAWCETT [1306] [MRIN: 256], daughter of Jeffers FAWCETT [334] and Agnes WONHAM [335], on 1 Sep 1909 in Walkerville, ON, CAN. Ethel was born on 8 Apr 1885 in Austin, TX, USA and died in Apr 1971 in Winnipeg, MB, CAN aged 86.
