Descendants of Thomas MacKenzie and Lucinda Haycock/Hickox

Generation No. 1

1. THOMAS1 MACKENZIE died Bef. 1861 in Cable Head, P.E.I. He married LUCY HAYCOCK (LUCINDA HICKOX) November 26, 1813 in St. Paul's Anglican Church, Charlottetown, P.E.I.

Notes for THOMAS MACKENZIE:

Thomas' birth date and any other personal information is unknown to me at this time. However he is in the same age group and same area of Cable Head, St. Peter's Bay to be a son of John McKenzie and Margaret MacKinnon who I believe have the following children:

A. Janet (Jane) McKenzie, St. Paul's Anglican Church Records, father John McKenzie mother Margaret, born 10th or 15th Dec 1789, bapt. 13 Oct 1790 by Rev. T. Desbrisay. I believe Janet (the name is also known as Jane, Jennie, etc.) married William McLaren Sr. b. 1784 of Cable Head West, PEI.

B. John McKenzie: Islander - Nov 10, 1871, pg. 3. Died at the Head of St. Peter's Bay on the 24 October, Mr. John McKenzie, sen., in the 76th year of his age, leaving a widow, five sons and four daughters, and a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn their loss. (John was born in 1795 according to his age at death)

C. Mary McKenzie, St. Paul's Anglican Church Records, father John McKenzie, mother Margaret MacKinnon, b. 17 May 1813, bapt. 7 July 1813.

The three oldest children of Thomas and Lucy; John, Thomas Edmund and Robert Alexander were baptized by Rev. L. C. Jenkins; the rest were baptized by Rev. T. Desbrisay at St. Paul's Anglican Church.

Notes for LUCY HAYCOCK (LUCINDA HICKOX): During the 1861 Census, Lucy MacKenzie head of household, two males under 5, one female from 5 to 16, one female from 16 to 21, one female from 21 to 45, one female over 60. There are no adult males! It is quite likely that Lucy is the female over 60 years old making her born before 1800. The 1871 Land Records show that Lucy held 47 acres of land in Cable Head in 1841.

This is the death notice from The Protestant and Evangelical Witness, Sat. Jan. 21, 1865:

At Cable Head, Kings County on the 16 Dec. 1864, Mrs. McKenzie, widow of the late Thomas McKenzie, leaving a large circle of friends to mourn her departure. "Be ye also ready, for in such an hour as ye think not the son of man cometh".

A tragic episode which happened on May 13, 1902, On this day numerous fishing boats under sail were lobstering off Cable Head shore and a boat capsized, drowning Frank McKenzie; the other Ebb MacCallum clung precariously to the keel. The sea had risen like magic and a heavy surf was pounding the shore. Robert McKenzie and his mate Bruce Hayden looked at each other and nodded and proceded to launch Bob's boat with the help of other fishermen. They successfully navigated the surf and after several tries and magnificent handling of the halyards and tiller, took off the surviving fisherman, Ebb Mac Callum. (taken in part from the Obituary of Bruce Hayden).

There was a poem written by the well known Tom Lewis of St. Peter's Bay about Bob McKenzie's bravery. In Edward Ives book, "Lawrence Doyle the Farmer Poet of Prince Edward Island". Tom Lewis did not like his work to be shown publically but for some reason he allowed this poem to be printed into a pamphlet in 1903 signed simply TL. Bob's grandson Robert MacKenzie of Morell, PEI is now in possession of the watch which was given to Bob as a token of his heriosim by the Queen of England.

Dies Suddenly On C.N.R. Platform.

Additional particulars in connection with the death of Mr. Robert McKenzie, Cable Head West, about five miles from St. Peter's briefly referred to in yesterday's issue reveal that he had been in the city attending a meeting of the P.E. Island Fishermen's Union. Just as he was about to board the Souris train on return home he fell to the platform.

Friends standing nearby rushed to his assistance, thinking he had fainted but he passed away before medical aid could reach him.

Coroner Dr. J. D. McGuigan, who was summoned immediately, said that the man had died from a heart attack. An inquest would not be necessary, he added.

The deceased who was 63 years of age was born at Cable Head West and had lived there all his life. He was a highly respected member of the community and his passing was a great shock to his relatives and friends. A successful fisherman, the late Mr. McKenzie was always interested in the welfare of the industry. It was in the interest of the fishermen that he journeyed to the city yesterday. The deceased had always enjoyed good health and was never known to have been bothered by his heart. He was apparently in the best of health when he came to Charlottetown yesterday according to friends who talked with him on the train.
