A MacPhee Family of Lot 67
Generation No. 1
1. UNKNOWN1 MACPHEE He married UNKNOWN.
Notes for UNKNOWN MACPHEE:
About 1840-42 a group of MacPhees emigrated from an as yet unknown location in Scotland and settled in Lot 67 on the Junction Road.
This group included Angus MacPhee, his wife Marey and daughter Ann as well as Angus' siblings Malcolm, Emily and Flora. A Peter MacPhee and wife Mary also came at this time. Peter co-leased land with Angus from Sir Gabriel Wood in June 1844. The relationship of Peter to Angus is unknown at this time, but my (current) theory is that Peter was probably his father.
See individual notes for Angus, Emily, Flora and Malcolm.
Thanks to Fred Curtis, a descendant of Angus MacPhee for filling in many gaps in this family tree.
Children of UNKNOWN MACPHEE and UNKNOWN are:
2. i. ANGUS2 MACPHEE, b. September 3, 1809, Scotland; d. Aft. 1901, PEI.
ii. EMILY MACPHEE, b. July 6, 1818, Scotland; d. Aft. 1901.
Notes for EMILY MACPHEE:
Never married.
Believe she is one of the 2 females age 21-45 in the household of Mary McPhee in the 1861 Census of Lot 67.
In 1880 Meacham's Atlas, occupies 50 acres on Junction Rd. Lot 67 along with sister Flora, adjacent to brothers Angus and Malcolm. This is the property shown on the 1863 Lake Map as held by 'Mrs. McPhee'. It seems logical to assume that Mary/Mrs. McPhee was their mother.
Found in censuses from 1881 to 1901 living with sister Flora in Lot 67. Stated year of emigration as 1840 and mother tongue as Gaelic on 1901 census.
More About EMILY MACPHEE:
Religion: Presbyterian
3. iii. FLORA MACPHEE, b. August 5, 1829, Scotland; d. Aft. 1901.
iv. MALCOM MACPHEE, b. Abt. 1819, Scotland; d. Aft. 1881.
Notes for MALCOM MACPHEE:
Never married.
Appears in 1861 Census, Lot 67 as single male farmer age 45-60, the only person in the household. Lease details were not given. No Lease found at PEI Archives.
Believe he is shown on 1863 Lake Map occupying property across from brother Angus in Lot 67, although with initial 'W' in error.
Shown in 1880 Meacham's Atlas as occupying 50 Acres on Junction Road Lot 67, across from brother Angus and sisters Emily and Flora.
Located in 1881 Census in Lot 67, but not found in 1891 or 1901.
More About MALCOM MACPHEE:
Occupation: Farmer
Religion: Presbyterian Church of the Lower Provinces.
Generation No. 2
2. ANGUS2 MACPHEE (UNKNOWN1) was born September 3, 1809 in Scotland, and died Aft. 1901 in PEI. He married MAREY MACDONALD. She was born Abt. 1809 in Scotland, and died Bet. 1881 - 1891 in PEI.
Notes for ANGUS MACPHEE:
Angus and his wife Marey were born in Scotland, according to the 1881 Census. According to the 1901 Census, Angus emigrated to PEI in 1840 (although daughter Ann indicated year of immigration as 1841 on 1901 Census). The exact place of origin in Scotland is unknown.
Records at the PEI Archives show that Angus MacPhee and a Peter MacPhee jointly leased one hundred acres in Lot 67 from Sir Gabriel Wood on June 24, 1844, the north half going to Angus and the south half to Peter.
The 1861 Census for Lot 67 shows the family of Angus McPhee, farmer, head of a household of 8, all "Presbyterian Church of the Lower Provinces". There are 2 married individuals 21-45, presumably Angus and Marey, 1 male and 1 female 16-21, possibly John and Ann, 1 male and 3 females 5-16, likely Donald, Catherine, Flora and possibly a Mary? 17 years have expired on the 999 year lease of 65 acres. This property is shown on the 1863 Lake Map adjoining 'Mrs. McPhee'.
Adjacent to Angus in 1861 is a Mary McPhee, farmer, with a household of 3 single females (2 aged 21-45, 1 over 60), all also Presbyterian Church of the Lower Provinces. Similarly, 17 years have expired on the 999 year lease of 50 acres. No Peter MacPhee is found in the 1861 Census. I believe that he had died by then and the property reverted to his widow Mary. This is supported by the fact that the number of years expired on the lease is the same as Angus' property, the 1863 Lake Map shows the property adjoining Angus to the south as being occupied by a 'Mrs. McPhee' and the same property according to the 1880 Meacham's Atlas is occupied by 'Misses E and F McPhee', Angus' sisters Flora and Emily.
Meacham's 1880 Atlas shows Angus McPhee owning 50 acres in Lot 67 on Junction Road adjacent to 'Misses" E and F McPhee' and 'M.' McPhee (Malcolm).
The 1881 Census for Lot 67 shows Angus, a Presbyterian farmer age 70, and his wife Marey, 72, living with a John 'Nichelson', 30, labourer, and his wife Flora, 28, and two children, William Morison, 8, and John Elliott, 3.
From the 1891 Census, we know that both Angus' parents were also born in Scotland. He is now widowed. His household consists of daughter Flora, 37, whose marital status is not stated, grandson John, 13, and granddaughter Christy, 7. The census taker has listed them all with the surname McPhee.
By the 1901 census, Angus is living with grandson Peter, and sisters Flora and Emily. Peter is listed as Head of the household. He was born in PEI. Angus is stated to be widowed 'Father', Flora is Married 'Mother' and Emily is a Single Aunt.
The burial location of Angus and Mary is unknown, and no tombstone has been located.
PEI Archives has no records of a will.

Notes for MARY FERGUSON:
On the 1891 Census, Mary is 6 years old, therefore born abt. 1885. Her sister Maud is 8 years old, therefore born abt. 1883. However on 1901 Census, Mary's birth year is given as 1883. There is no Maud on 1901 Census, but there is a daughter born in 1885 with an illegible name beginning with what appears to be an 'O' and a middle initial M. It appears that on either the 1891 or 1901 census the census taker transposed these two names.
viii. MAUD FERGUSON, b. August 16, 1885, PEI.
Notes for MAUD FERGUSON:
See notes for Mary.

5. JOHN3 MACPHEE (ANGUS2, UNKNOWN1) was born March 15, 1844 in PEI, and died July 16, 1927 in Springton, PEI. He married FLORA MACINTOSH March 12, 1869 in PEI, daughter of RODERICK MACINTOSH and EUPHEMIA MACPHERSON. She was born June 10, 1847 in PEI, and died May 24, 1941 in Springton, PEI.
Notes for JOHN MACPHEE:
Roderick MacIntosh, John's father-in-law, bequeathed one half of his farm (50 acres) in Springton, to John in his will dated May 28, 1875.
According to Meacham's 1880 Atlas, a John McPhee owned 50 acres in Lot 67 on the Bedeque Road in Springton.
John is living in Lot 67 at the 1881, 1891 and 1901 Censuses. On 1891 Census, John states both parents were born in Scotland.

6. DONALD3 MACPHEE (ANGUS2, UNKNOWN1) was born May 1, 1845 in PEI, and died February 12, 1914 in Elmwood, PEI. He married ISABELLA MACINTOSH Aft. January 5, 1866 in PEI, daughter of RODERICK MACINTOSH and EUPHEMIA MACPHERSON. She was born May 1833 in PEI, and died January 4, 1906 in PEI.
Notes for DONALD MACPHEE:
No birth record has been found for Donald MacPhee, and his Death Record from PEI Vital Statistics does not state his parents' names. Parents' names were established from his siblings' Death Records obtained from Vital Statistics, namely, John MacPhee, and Catherine MacPhee Harding. Note: Vital Statistics has Donald's date of death as January 14, 1914, while obituary and tombstone has February 14, 1914.
Donald was living in Lot 67 prior to his marriage to Isabella MacIntosh Buchanan, a widow about 12 years his senior with 5 children. They settled in Lot 31 by 1880, as according to Meacham's 1880 Atlas, Donald McPhee, is shown as owning 50 acres in Lot 31 on the Colville Road at Wynn Road near Emyvale. He is a farmer living in Lot 31 in the 1881, 1891 and 1901 Censuses.
Note Re 1881 Census for Donald's family: The census taker erroneously listed 4 of Isabella's Buchanan children as McPhees and on the next page, listed all 6 of Donald and Isabella's MacPhee children as "Bohannan". The correct family make-up @ 1881 is as follows:
McPhee Donald M 36
McPhee Isabella F 48
Buchanan Malcolm M 25
Buchanan Effie F 23
Buchanan Mary F 21
Buchanan Christy F 18
Buchanan Anthony M 20
McPhee John M 14
McPhee James M 11
McPhee Jane F 9
McPhee Daniel M 7
McPhee Catherine F 5
McPhee William M 2
On 1891 Census, Donald states both parents were born in Scotland.
Obituary from "The Guardian" Feb. 23, 1914 (provided by Judy A. LeDrew):
"The death of Mr. Donald MacPhee, Elmwood, occurred at his home after a short illness on Feb. 12th at the age of 69 years. He is survived by four sons, William at home, John in Quincy, Mass., James in Rhode Island, and Daniel in Vermont, and two daughters, Mrs. Charles E. MacDonald and Mrs. Benj. F. MacDuff, in Prov. R. I. One brother John in Springton (PEI), and two sisters Mrs. John (Ann) Ferguson, Charlottetown, and Mrs. James Harding, French River (PEI) also survive.
The funeral service conducted by Rev. J.H. McHattie was largely attended, showing the esteem in which the deceased was held. Interment was in Clyde River Presbyterian Cemetery."

Burial: Burnside Presbyterian Cemetery, Clyde River, PEI
Occupation: Farmer
Religion: Presbyterian
Notes for ISABELLA MACINTOSH:
No birth record or death record has been found for Isabella to prove her parentage. However, oral family history (source: granddaughter Isabelle MacPhee) maintains that Donald MacPhee and his brother married two sisters and that Isabella's sister was named Flora. I have assumed, until any evidence to the contrary is found, that Isabella MacIntosh is the sister of Donald's brother John MacPhee's wife, Flora MacIntosh and that her parents are therefore also Roderick MacIntosh and Euphemia MacPherson.
On 1891 Census, Isabella states that both parents were born in Scotland (as were Roderick MacIntosh and Euphemia MacPherson, according to Death Record of Flora MacIntosh).
Isabella was a widow with 5 children in 1866 when she married Donald MacPhee, who was about 12 years her junior.
See "Descendants of John Buchanan and Isabella MacIntosh" for further information on the children of Isabella’s first marriage..

Notes for WILLIAM GRANT MACPHEE:
William MacPhee's family lived near the Clows. According to my mother, Isabelle MacPhee, when Alice was born, William, who was visiting and viewing the baby for the first time, was supposed to have said: "That's the girl I'm going to marry", and of course some years later, he did.
William and Alice farmed at Elmwood for several years, then bought the farm formerly owned by Alice's brother Albert at New Haven (opposite her parents' old home). After William's death, Alice and her son William (Bill) continued to live on and farm at New Haven. An older son, Waldron, continued to farm the Elmwood farm where William and Alice first lived after marriage.
There is no baptism record at PEI Archives for William.

8. FLORA ANN3 MACPHEE (ANGUS2, UNKNOWN1) was born Abt. 1854 in PEI, and died Abt. 1893 in PEI. She met (1) ROBERT ELLIOT. She married (2) JOHN NICHOLSON January 18, 1879 in PEI. He was born Abt. 1850 in PEI, and died February 1, 1934 in NB.
Notes for FLORA ANN MACPHEE:
Flora appears in the 1881 census of Lot 67, along with her husband John Nicholson, living with her parents, Angus and Marey MacPhee. Also living in the household is John Elliott, age 3, who according to Fred Curtis, is Flora's son by a prior relationship.
In 1891, Flora is still living with Angus. Census taker recorded her last name as McPhee instead of Nicholson though. John Nicholson does not appear on census with them--he has left by this time. Two children are living with Flora and Angus, John who is presumably the John Elliott on 1881 census, who is now 13 and is identified as G.S. (grandson) of Angus, and Christy, age 7, G.D. (grandaughter) of Angus. (Last names were recorded as McPhee).
According to Fred Curtis, Flora died about 1893 of kidney complications after falling into a stream on her way home from Fredericton, PEI with Christy.
Notes for JOHN NICHOLSON:
According to Fred Curtis, John left Flora and daughter Christie and went to Plaster Rock area of New Brunswick. Appears there in 1901 NB Census. John was Fish Warden at the pool on the Serpentine.

.
Child of FLORA MACPHEE and JOHN NICHOLSON is:
ii. CHRISTINE (CHRISTY) MARY4 NICHOLSON, b. Abt. 1884, PEI; d. 1969; m. FREDERICK CHARLES MACINNIS, June 22, 1904; b. 1877; d. 1938.
Notes for CHRISTINE (CHRISTY) MARY NICHOLSON:
Found in 1891 Census living with Angus and Flora MacPhee. Relationship to Angus is 'G.D.', granddaughter. Surname shown as McPhee rather than Nicholson.
After the death of her mother, Christy was raised by her uncle Donald (my great grandfather) on the Colville Road.
There is a Christy Nicholson, age 17, Methodist, Domestic, living in Lot 33 in the 1901 Census that matches this Christy. She is living in a household named Essery(?) and appears to have a 1 year old son named John C. Nicholson.
According to Fred Curtis, Christy was living in Winsloe (which is in Lot 33), at the time of her marriage.
Christy and her husband had 11 children.
.
9. MARY3 MACPHEE (ANGUS2, UNKNOWN1) was born Bef. 1856. She married GEORGE MORRISON February 23, 1872 in PEI.
Notes for MARY MACPHEE:
Information about Mary MacPhee from Judy Ledrew. Not certain if Mary belongs to this family or not. (Fred Curtis does not think so.) I am including her here for information purposes. She is in the right place at the right time and is the right age. The fact that an Angus McPhee served as bondsman lends credence to the possibility that she is related. She could be the unaccounted for female child of the 1861 census. This would put her birth date in the range 1846 to 1856.
There is a child named William 'Morison', age 8, living with Angus MacPhee at the 1881 census--possible child of Mary MacPhee and George Morrison????
Marriage Notes for MARY MACPHEE and GEORGE MORRISON:
From Judy LeDrew: Mary McPhee from "Strathablyn" and George Morrison from Town Rd., Lot 67 married by license by Rev. Alexander Campbell. Bondsman Angus McPhee. Witnesses John Morrison and Donald Gunn.
Child of MARY MACPHEE and GEORGE MORRISON is:
i. WILLIAM4 MORRISON, b. Abt. 1873.
Notes for WILLIAM MORRISON:
A William 'Morison' found living in the household of Angus MacPhee in 1881 census. Unknown at this time if this is son of Mary MacPhee and George Morrison. Including here for information purposes. .
