The Descendants of George Penman

CAUTION: DO NOT COPY MATERIAL FROM THIS ENTRY INTO OTHER GENEALOGICAL WORK!

IT IS PURELY SPECULATIVE AND IS PLACED HERE SOLELY TO ENTICE FURTHER RESEARCH.

It is a work in progress and is, quite possibly, the most unsubstantiated pieces of research ever placed on the Island Register.

ATTENTION: MEMBERS OF FAMILIES CAMPBELL, COUSINS, LAING, MACARTHUR, MONTGOMERY, MURRAY (UEL), OWEN, RAMSAY, ROBBLEE, WOODSIDE, etc., SOME OF YOUR ANCESTORS COULD BE HERE!

This entry is being placed here by a group of individuals, many having never met, in the hope that opening this issue to the general public will result in additional relevant information. This is of importance to all persons interested in Prince Edward Island history as George Penman (Generations 2 and 3, Number 3) was, after George Hardy, one of the earliest settlers of Lot 13. Many Prince Edward Islanders and "those from away" are descended from George Penman but, as they are also descended from his daughters, the family is difficult to trace. Thus, by 1840, the Penman name had disappeared from PEI.

Over 20 individuals have contributed to this research. Some of them are: Karen Allan, Lynne Charles, Carolyn Collins, Edna Cudmore, Madeleine DeBlois, Dorothy Gladish, Diana Hemphill, David Hunter, Reginald MacAusland, J. Darrach Murray, Donna Phillips, Archibald Ramsay, Colin N. Ramsay, Mona Rhone, H. Jean Richardson, Bob Robblee, J. Robblee, Elizabeth Russon, Ann Smith, Paul Sutherland, Catherine Jean Smith and Jim Wylie.

Please see top of page for contact email addresses. So that all new information is collected centrally, all contacts should be to either of Edna Cudmore's addresses given there.

Early Generations

There is speculation that the Penman line might go back, over seven earlier generations, to about the 15th century, as follows:

Mr. and Mrs. Penn (original name???), Suffolk, England.

Mr. and Mrs. Penn, married, Dunton, Bedford.

James Penman (1522-1597) married in 1554 to Unknown.

John Penman (1580-?) and Katherine Hamilton married 11 Jul 1605, Edinburgh, Scotland.

John Penman (1603-?) and Helen Samuel or Savenell (1605-?) married 25 Nov 1626, Dunfermline.

John Penman (1629-?) and Mrs. John, probably Bessie or Elizabeth Craig m. ?1652, Edinburgh.

Generation No. 3

3. GEORGE3 PENMAN (GEORGE2, GEORGE1) was born 14 May 1714 in Torryburn, Fife, Scotland, and died 1804 at Port Hill Farm, PEI. He married (1) CHRISTIAN HUNTER 07 Dec 1733 in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland. He married (2) MARY MARGARET EDGAR 06 Jan 1751 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. She died Bef. 1770. He married (3) MARY COLE.

More About GEORGE PENMAN:

Military service: 1758, Siege of Louisburg. & elsewhere as "Payroll Master" or "Paymaster."

Occupation: 1758, "Payroll Master" with Lord Rollo on landing in PEI.

Settled in Lot 13, PEI, before 1775. (He signed a court document in PEI in 1775.)

Note: The above appears logical but, while we know that a George Penman served in this quasi-military capacity with Rollo, we cannot positively determine that he is the same George Penman that settled in Lot 13 and died there in 1804. As George Penmans name has not been found on military rolls, one source suggests that, during this period, the civilian firm "Couts & Co" was providing pay services to the British Army. Whether George was an employee of this firm warrants further investigation. Also, being closely associated with Rollo, it is unlikely that George Penman remained with the small garrison in Charlottetown after 1758 but departed to continue in Rollos service.

Child of GEORGE PENMAN and CHRISTIAN HUNTER is:

    1. GEORGE4 PENMAN, b. 1745, Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland.

Note: While not substantiated, the above marriage appears to be correct, as there is other evidence of association between the Penmans and the Hunters. Also, variations of the name "Christian" appear in later generations of Penman children. More important could George Penman (b. 1745), not his father, the Payroll Master, have been the Lot 13 settler?

Children of GEORGE PENMAN and MARY EDGAR are:

6. ii. NANCY4 PENMAN, b. 1768, New England; d. 02 Aug 1837.

7. iii. ELIZABETH PENMAN, b. Abt. 1769; d. 1849, North Bedeque, PEI.

8. iv. MARGARET PENMAN, b. Abt. 1771.

Children of GEORGE PENMAN and MARY COLE are:

9. v. CHRISTIANA PENMAN, b. Abt. 1773; d. 18 Oct 1811.

10. vi. JANE PENMAN, b. Abt. 1776; m. JAMES TOWNSEND.

Note: As neither the death date of Mary Edgar or the marriage date of George Penman and Mary Cole are known, it is impossible to identify whether a given daughters mother was Mary Edgar or Mary Cole.

SEE THE DESCENDANTS OF MARY COLE FROM HER FIRST MARRIAGE AT THE END OF THIS ENTRY.

4. ROBERT3 PENMAN (GEORGE2, GEORGE1) was born 29 Nov 1728 in Torryburn, Fife, Scotland. He married JANET THOMSON 28 Feb 1752 in Fife, Scotland, daughter of THOMAS THOMSON and JANET SPROUT. She was born 04 Jul 1731 in Tulliallan, Perth, Scotland.

Another Possibility

Virtually at "press time" one of our contributors, using "WorldConnect," discovered the following:

Generation No. 1

JOSEPH COLES, b. 29 Jan 1713, Oyster Cove, Nassau, New York, m. ABIGAIL HOPKINS, b. 9 Apr 1718, daughter of DANIEL HOPKINS and AMY WEEKS.

Child of JOSEPH COLES and ABIGAIL HOPKINS:

BENJAMIN COLES, b. 8 Apr 1738.

Generation No. 2

MARY ALBERTSON, b. ?, d. ?, m. (1) 16 Sep 1760, BENJAMIN COLES, b. 8 Apr 1738, son of JOSEPH COLES and ABIGAIL HOPKINS; and m. (2) 1766, GEORGE PENMAN.

Note: As yet, no substantiation of the above has been found. Thus, it would be unwise to speculate that Mary ALBERTSON is, in fact, Mary COLE or that this is the Penman couple that came to Lot 13, PEI. However, should it be substantiated, it would indicate that Benjamin COLE(S) and Mary ALBERTSON were the parents of Benjamin (b. 1762) and Mary COLE and that, George Penman and Mary ALBERTSON COLE, if married in 1766, were the parents of Nancy (Aka: Ann), Elizabeth, Margaret, Christina, and Jane Penman.
