1. NICHOLAS1 QUIGLEY was born April 20, 1828 in Renfrewshire, Scotland, and died January 10, 1909 in Togus, Maine. Buried Riverside Cem. South Royalston, Mass.. He married JANE CARSON 1849 in Cumberland, Rhode Island, USA..

Notes for NICHOLAS QUIGLEY:

Nicholas Quigley was born April 20 1823, note: a five year discrepancy exists between the birth year indicated on Nicholas gravestone and his deposition for his pension from the military. as a young man he obtained employment on an english mail ship. When the ship docked in Boston, he jumped ship and fearing he might be arrested he changed his name to Nicholas Tweedell. He travelled to Providence, R.I. and a short time later obtained employment on the farm of Nelson Jenckes in Cumberland, R.I. Jane Carson was already employed there as a servant. Shortly thereafter he enlisted in the army still using the name Tweedell. He returned to the Jenckes after the war, resumed the name Quigley, and married Jane Carson a year or so later in Cumberland, R.I. Jane states the year was 1849 but they were unable to obtain a record of it when they applied for one at the time of his pension application. His occupation was listed as weaver, and card stripper. Nicholas enlisted as a Private on March 16, 1847 in the miltary at Provdence, R.I. He mustered out as a Private on Aug 24, 1848 at Fort Adams, R.I. His total miltary service was 17 months and 9 days. He filed for Miltary Pension on Apr. 29, 1887 the amount he received was $8.00 a month commencing on Jan. 29, 1887. $12.00 per month commencing Jan 5, 1893. He was dropped from the Pension list Jan. 10, 1909 because of death at National Soldiers Home, Togus, Maine. Cause of death chornic interstitial nephritis

Nicholas and Jane could not read or write.

After Jane died a letter came from a law firm in England to settle the Carson Estate in Ireland, Jane and Nicholas's six grown children received 1,500.00 each from that estate.

Sarah's mother died when she was age 4. Sarah went to live with her maternal grandparents Robert and Sarah Andrews Her Aunt Emma also lived with her parents, Emma had a daughter Addie who also lived there. Addie and Sarah grew up almost like sisters. Sarah lived in her grandparents home until she was 15, then she moved to the Rustico Rd. to live with her father. Sarah attended North Milton School until she was 15 and in grade 10. When she moved to her father's she attended Wheatley School for 2 years. About age 16, she contacted typhoid fever and all her hair fell out. She was reluctant about attending school with no hair but her father told her it was better to get her education than to worry about her hair. Sarah went on to be a school teacher. She taught school in Covehead in 1933-34. It was while teaching in Covehead, that she met her husband.

She leaves her husband, William Kelley, a son Robert W. Kelley of Poway, Calif. five grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. She was born in Dudley, a daughter of Robert and Mary {Ferley} Quigley. Private graveside service will be held in Calvary Cemetary Dudley at the convience of the family. Instead of flowers, contributions may be to a charity of donors choice. Sarah or Sally was also known as Sadie.

Webster Mass. Newspaper Clipping: William Kelley. 92 of the Odd Fellows Home, Randolph Road, Wocester. He was an electrian at the former Whitin Machine Co. in Whitinsville for many years before he retired. His wife Sally {Quigley} died Feb. 24. He leaves a son, Robert W. Kelley of Poway, Calif., five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was born in Providence, R.I. and lived many years in Webster before moving to Worcester. Private graveside service at the convience of the family will be held in Calvary Cemetary, Dudley. There are no calling hours.
