TALKS at Grand-Pré, N.S. Saturday, July 25, 2009

TALKS at Grand-Pré Saturday, July 25, 2009

Theme: Grand-Pré Still Has Secrets to Reveal

Master of Ceremonies: Georges Arsenault

(1) SERGE-PATRICE THIBODEAU 10:00 - 11:00 am (in French)

Le lt-col. John Winslow par lui-même : esquisse d'un personnage

Writers and historians have used all kinds of defamatory adjectives to describe Lt. Col. Winslow. But who was this man? What does he say about himself in his famous Journal that provides a detailed account of the siege of Fort Beauséjour and the deportation of the Acadians at Grand-Pré? After examining Winslow's Journal and letters from a literary point of view, Serge Patrice Thibodeau will offer a portrait of this man who marked the history of the Acadians.

Serge Patrice Thibodeau is one of the best known young Acadian poets. Between 1990 and 2005, he has published two essays, eleven collections of poetry, and a book of travel writings. He has received numerous awards for his publications, including the Prix France-Acadie, the Governor General's Award and the Prix Antonine Maillet. He has completed his translation of the second part of Winslow's Journal. Serge Patrice Thibodeau is currently literary editor for the publishing house Éditions Perce-Neige in Moncton.

(2) RONNIE-GILLES LEBLANC 11 h 00 - 12 h 00 (in French)

La Grand'Prée des Planters : un village à rebâtir ou à recycler ?

Were all the Acadian villages burned or destroyed during the Deportation? What happened in Grand'Prée? When they arrived in 1760, were the Planters really met with a scene of desolation and destruction, as many authors suggest? Based on a re-examination of the sources describing the settlement of the Planters, Ronnie-Gilles LeBlanc will propose another view of the landscape.

Historian at Parks Canada, Ronnie-Gilles LeBlanc is the long-time editor of the Cahiers de la Société historique acadienne. He has written numerous articles on Acadian history and edited the collective work entitled Du Grand-Dérangement à la Déportation to which he contributed two chapters, including one on the impact of the Deportation on the Acadian community of Pigiguit (Windsor).

~ LUNCH served on the premises, prepared by the Ami(e)s de Grand-Pré ($5.00) ~

(3) STAN SURETTE 1:00 - 1:15 pm (in English)

(4) SARA BEANLANDS 1:30 - 2:30 pm

The Brown Manuscript: An 18th Century Account of the Acadian Deportation

Rev. Dr. Andrew Brown was a Scottish Presbyterian minister, University of Edinburgh professor who worked in Nova Scotia from 1787 to 1795. He wrote one of the earliest known historical accounts of the Deportation of the Acadians. Sara Beanlands will talk about the unique aspects of Brown's account, in particular the primary sources he utilized and his interpretation of the Deportation and 18th century colonial policy in general.

With a degree in History and Social Anthropology from Dalhousie, Sara Beanlands is completing her M.A. in History at Saint Mary's University, focussing on the 18th century manuscripts of the Rev. Dr. Andrew Brown. She has given numerous lectures related to her research, including presentations for the University of Edinburgh, the Université de Moncton, and the Royal Nova Scotia Historical Society. Sara Beanlands currently works as an archaeologist and historical research for Cultural Resource Management Group, an archaeological consulting firm based in Halifax.

(5) WAYDE BROWN 2:30 - 3:30 pm

Percy Nobbs and a Garden for Evangeline

In 1919 Percy Nobbs, a well-known Montreal architect and professor at McGill University was commissioned to design a small garden setting for a statue of Evangeline at Grand-Pré. The initial proposal grew into a large and complex landscape design. While this design has been extended and altered during the past nine decades, it continues to give physical definition to Grand-Pré National Historic Site. Wayde Brown will examine Nobb's proposal and the cultural value of the elements of his design that still exist today.

Wayde Brown is an associate professor in the College of Environment and Design, University of Georgia, and previously managed built heritage programs for the Province of Nova Scotia. His research interests include the history of the heritage conservation movement in Canada and the United States, especially the use of historic reconstructions, and the interpretation of cultural landscapes.

6) Guided visit of the gardens by Scott Crowell, Chief Gardener 4:00 pm

Scott Crowell has been the gardener at Grand-Pré since 1998. He is the second member of the Crowell family to ensure the beauty of the Victorian gardens that characterize Grand-Pré National Historic Site - his father Douglas occupied the position of gardener from 1968 à 1995.
