Generation 1

  1. Thomas Spain-1. He was born 1806 in County Tipperary, Ireland. He died on 06 Feb 1873 in Shediac, N.B..

Notes for Thomas Spain: General Notes:

Daniel and Ellen were christened by the mission priest from St. Dunstans Basilica in Charlottetown, PEI., John by the mission priest from St.Augustines, Rustico and Chryostar at St. Peters, 7 Mile Bay . The 1841 census records 2 boys and 2 girls. As Chryostor (possibly Chryostum) was born after the census in 1841, it would appear a daughter may have died. Patrick Henry Spain has been connected through his obituary, which reads in part"....born on P.E. Island, but a few years later his family moved to Shediac, N.B....". Through the efforts of Victoria Cleveland in 2002, the remainder of Daniel's family was located in New Brunswick registers.

Catherine McInnis. She was born 1805. She died on 18 Dec 1885 in Shediac, N.B..

  2. ii. Ellen Spain. She was born on 14 Nov 1835 in Albany, P.E.I.. She married James Mahoney. They were married on 10 Jun 1855. She died Unknown.

  3. iii. John Spain. He was born on 08 Feb 1838 in Albany, P.E.I..

  4. iv. Peter Spain. He was born 1844 in Albany, PEI.

  5. v. Catherine Spain. She was born 1845 in Albany, PEI. She married Richard Costello. They were married on 13 Feb 1872 in Barachois, N.B..

  6. Chryostor Spain. He was born on 28 May 1846 in Albany, P.E.I.. He died on 18 Nov 1864 in Richibucto, N.B..

  7. vii. Patrick Henry Spain. He was born on 20 Feb 1848 in Albany, PEI. He married Harriet A. (Nettie) James. They were married on 13 Jan 1888 in New Limerick, Maine. He died on 27 May 1906 in New Limerick, Maine.

  1. Daniel Spain-2 (Thomas Spain-1). He was born on 15 Dec 1833 in Albany, PEI. He died Unknown.

Notes for Daniel Spain: General Notes:

The age information comes from the Westmorland County, N.B. census of 1871. Daniel is also shown in a Dec. 9, 1870 newspaper report as running for council in Shediac, N.B. The National Archives in Waltham, Mass., shows a Daniel J. Spain, born Dec. 15,1841 on PEI, as becoming a naturalized US citizen on May 15, 1878. The reason for the discrepancy in the birth date is unknown. The 1880 census for Boston,shows 7 children, but no further info developed from this. Virginia Cleveland, genealogist has provided the latter info.

James Mahoney. He was born Abt. 1821 in Ireland. He died Unknown.

This information provided by Ellen Wile, g.granddaughter of Ellen. James was born in Ireland. She says that research shows James and Ellen were very poor struggling to raise so many children. All the children were born in Sackville, N.B., with records being found in St. Thomas' RC Church in St. Joseph's, N.B., the oldest Catholic church in the Maritimes.James family in Ireland were reported to be very wealthy as owners of a woolen mill. An O'Mahoney Woolen Mill in Blarney,

near the city of Cork in County Cork, may be the one. They wanted to take Mary Ann to Ireland to raise her, but her mother (Ellen) refused to let her go.

Catherine, Mary Ann, James and Rosanna all migrated to the Boston area of Mass.

Ethel became a Sister, joining the order of The Dominican Nuns, a monastery in Catonsville, New Jersey. The community was founded in Baltimore in 1899 and closed in 1980.She rose to Mother Superior of the Order.
