March 9, 1936 - March 5, 2010

This document is the result of many, many years of research, and careful documentation by my sister, June G. (MacPhee) Taylor, wife of Lloyd M. Taylor, Nine Mile Creek, PEI. June died March 5, 2010. Her work also includes much more information about later generations that is not included here. I am attempting to see that her work gets published online so that it is neither lost, nor wasted, and hopefully can be helpful for generations to come. Please note that as far as possible, this work is submitted "as is" , with as few changes as possible. Changes and/or additions, if necessary, will be shown "in blue" text. If anyone wishes to contact me with questions, I will try to answer to the best of my ability, but I ask that you realize that this is NOT my work.

Judy A. (MacPhee) LeDrew

Anyone wishing to use ANY PORTION of this information, may do so, IF credit is given to June G. Taylor, as being the author of this body of work, including any and all details contained within.

Taylor's of St. Peter's Island, Lot 65, PEI

Generation One

1. JAMES TAYLOR, possibly born ca. 1790, died MAY-1873 in St. Peter's Island, PEI, buried 21-May-1873 in Canoe Cove Presbyterian Cemetery, PEI. Death and burial dates from John MacEachern's diary.

He made his will on 24-Jan-1866. Liber 8, Folio 558, page200. His will was read on 20-May-1873.

This is the man said to be rescued from drowning off St. Peter's Island by an Indian lady, who he afterwards married. This story was told to me many years ago by Weldon Taylor and recently by Joyce (Ferguson) Crosby a great-great granddaughter of Margaret (Taylor) Crew.

Weldon Taylor also told me the early Taylor's were buried in Canoe Cove. There is no headstone for James Taylor Senior, I assume it was destroyed.

In the 1901 census all the Taylor's on St. Peter's Island say their father was of Scottish descent which made me decide to check the 1891 census to check Henry to see what he had to say , he said the place of birth of his father was Scotland, place of birth of his mother was N.P.E.I. everyone else just has, P.E.I. June wondered if the N.P.E.I. meant "Native of PEI, i.e. an Aboriginal person, as it was often said that the Taylors had "Indian blood". However, no proof, either way.

Another troubling thing in my search of this family is the Census for Lot 65 for 1861 is missing, and there isn't another one until 1881. J.T.

He married ANN ??? (surname unknown), born 1800, died 12-May-1865, buried in Canoe Cove Presbyterian Cemetery, PEI.

ANN: Inscribed on her headstone "In memory of Ann wife of James Taylor died May-12-1865, Aet. 65" , Is she the mother of his children or is she his second wife?. If she is their mother they must have been married young, (or the person providing the information for the headstone was incorrect re the dates). An Ann Lutz married a James Taylor on 08 - June -1829. They were married by L.C. Jenkins. If this should happen to be the correct Ann she is the second wife of James Taylor. We may never know for sure.

Children of James Taylor and Ann Unknown:

2. i. JAMES TAYLOR born 1815.

3. ii. MARGARET TAYLOR born 1817.

4. iii. HENRY TAYLOR born 1820.

5. iv. MARY JANE TAYLOR born @ 1824.

Generation Two

2. JAMES TAYLOR, born 1815 in PEI, died 1-DEC-1873 in St. Peter's Island, PEI, buried in Canoe Cove Presbyterian Cemetery, PEI. His father said in his will his son James was to pay all his debts and funeral expenses. He also left his farm on St. Peter's Island containing 100 acres "On which I have resided for many years past", to his son James.

Islander: 26-Dec-1873, pg 5.

"Died at St. Peter's Island, on Dec. 1st after a long illness, which he bore with Christian patience and resignation to the divine will. Mr. James Taylor, pilot in the 59th year of his age."

Inscribed on his headstone. A native of PE Island. There is no headstone for his wife, but there are empty spaces, it could have been destroyed.

He married ELIZABETH LUND, 21-Mar-1838 in Witnessed by William and James Ferguson, born 1815 in England (according to the 1891 census) (daughter of WILLIAM LUND and MARY ANN HUNTER), died ??, buried in Canoe Cove Presbyterian Cemetery, PEI.

Children of James Taylor and Elizabeth Lund:

6. i. CAROLINE TAYLOR born 1841.

7. ii. WILLIAM TAYLOR born 1842.

8. iii. MARY TAYLOR born 29-Jan-1844.

9. iv. JAMES TAYLOR born 31-Oct-1852.

v. ELIZABETH JANE TAYLOR. According to her father's will made on 06-Oct-1873, Eliza Jane was under 21 years of age. She was to be paid $324.44 in ten yearly installments of $32.44 on her becoming 21 years of age.

She married HECTOR CORBETT.

3. MARGARET TAYLOR, born 1817 in St. Peter's Island, PEI, died 4-Feb-1890 in Westmoreland, PEI, buried in Westmoreland Baptist Cemetery, PEI. James Taylor's will: "And I do hereby bequeath to my daughter Margaret, wife of Joseph Crew, six sheep on the same conditions as the bequest to my son Henry". Liber 8, Folio 558, pg 200.

She married JOSEPH CREW, born 1812 in England, died 12-Jan-1892, buried in Westmoreland Baptist Cemetery, PEI, occupation STONEMASON.

JOSEPH: In the 1880 Atlas he was said to have come from England in 1822.

Children of Margaret Taylor and Joseph Crew:

i. HANNAH CREW, born 1837, died 3-Oct-1860, buried in Crapaud Peoples Cemetery, PEI.

10. ii. GEORGE CREW born 1846.

11. iii. EMMA CREW born 1857.

4. HENRY TAYLOR, born 1820 in St. Peter's Island, PEI, died 7-Feb-1897, buried in Canoe Cove Presbyterian Cemetery, PEI. In the 1881 census Henry said his Mother was a N P.E.I. or native of PEI.

From his father's will. "I do hereby give and bequeath to my son Henry Taylor, of Big Point, Lot sixty five in Prince Edward Island aforesaid, farmer, (provided he does not receive any part thereof from me prior to my death) Two cows, Nine sheep, my bed and bedding, wearing apparel, and my Family Bible, any part thereof being received by him as above to be deducted from this bequest". Notes. I do not know why June Taylor did not include this person (Kate) as a child of this couple in the list below. Possibly because other family members did not know of her existence. However, with the above baptismal information, it is certain that she is indeed a child of William Taylor and Sarah MacRae, and that she was baptised the same date as her sister, Elizabeth Jane Taylor, i.e. September 9, 1887.

The residence of Wm. Taylor, St. Peter's Island was the scene of a very pleasant event on Tuesday evening Sept. 12th at 8:30 p.m. When his youngest daughter Miss Elizabeth Jane was united in marriage to Mr. Alexander Cameron of Halifax

The ceremony was performed by the Rev. J. G. McIvor. The bride who was elegantly attired in grey & white, looked charming and carried a bouquet. She was attended by her cousin, Caroline Taylor of the same place. The groom was supported by Mr. Brenton Currie, Fairview. The groom Mr. Cameron recently returned from the west, where he spent many years. The wedding party had a most enjoyable time till a late hour. Crossing the bar was much enjoyed as it was a beautiful calm night and all came and went together. The happy couple leave for Halifax today where they will permanently reside.
