Generation No. 2

2. ROBERT FORSTER3 WOOLNER (JAMES2, JAMES1)1 was born 1787 in Dunwich, Suffolk County, England1, and died Jan 23, 1860 in North Rustico, Prince Edward Island, Canada1. He married (1) MARGARET TUTHILL1, daughter of THOMAS TUTHILL and MARGARET //. She was born 17871, and died Feb 07, 1816 in Middleton, Suffolk Co., England1. He married (2) SARAH SALLY KEMP1 Jan 15, 1818 in Darsham, Suffolk County, England1. She was born 1795 in Dunwich, Suffolk County, England1, and died May 11, 1876 in North Rustico, Prince Edward Island, Canada1.

Notes for ROBERT FORSTER WOOLNER:

Robert and Sarah came to Canada in 1836, leaving London in March aboard the Victoria taking with them their two horses, their cattle, their farm implements and 3 children and a baby on the way. The voyage was to take 30 days, but because of adverse winds and rough seas took 72 days to cross the North Atlantic. Fodder for the animals ran out and the master of the ship helped to keep them alive on a diet of ships' biscuits and beer. They settled into their new home before mid summer, Chester ( with Uncle George had sailed from London on the Amelia bound for PEI, arrived, secured land and built a house then returned to England) however remained in Dunwick with the three older children, stayed until the tenancy of Corporation farm expired in September 1836, then they too sailed in the Victoria, arriving in Charlottetown on the 13th of October 1836. Thus did a plucky, enterprising, well-organized Dunwich family leave to make a new life for themselves on the bleak eastern seaboard of Canada.

Notes for MICHAEL WALLACE SKINNER:

The Islander, Dec. 22, 1854, page 2: Married: Woolner Mary, to Michael Wallace Skinner

M. W. Skinner was a druggist in Charlottetown, PEI.

90 Sydney Street, the Skinner family lived here from 1861 to 1885. Michael was a druggist, his shop on Queen Street, the present site of the Federal Building , is still remembered by some older citizens. They recall especially the large flaxen-hair doll that used to be in the window. The Island's great story\teller Lucy Maud Montgomery wove the tale of the Skinner doll into the book Magic for Marigold. She spoke of

the famous Skinner doll "Alicia" made in the image of a dead child, so lifelike that passers-by shuddered.

The plain facade of this house would not belie the evidence that it was origianlly intended for business. Its beauty lies in good proportions, fine eave returns, large corner boards, and symmetrical window openings. See page 280 and 281 of "Charlottetown The life in its Buildings", written by Irene L. Rogers. The Book is in my library of reference books.

Notes for MARGARET MARY WOOLNER:

Margaret Mary was an old lady when in 1917, two years before her death, she crochet "a dainty piece of work made of 120 thread and expressed the desire that it be sent to the Queen". (Queen Mary, wife of George V.)

Newspaper article on file attesting to these facts and a reply from Katherine Coke Lady-in-waiting to the Queen.

Notes for JOHN MACKENZIE:

Royal Gazette, Tues. 5 Jan. 1841. On the 10th Dec. by Rev. John Geddie, Mr. John McKenzie of Cavendish to Margaret, eldest daughter of Mr. Robert Woolner, Rustico.

(In earlier years Rustico and Cavendish seemed to have no distinguished lines and all persons born, married and died in Cavendish were registered as Rustico or North Rustico.)

Margaret Mary was the sister of Lucy Woolner who was L. M. Montgomery's Grandmother. Thus the MacKenzie/Robertson's/Offers have a common Parental lineage in Robert Woolner and Sarah Kemp, parents of Lucy and Margaret Mary.

ii. THEOPHILUS FOSTER MACKENZIE1, b. Apr 14, 1843, Cavendish, PEI1; d. Nov 19, 1915, Cavendish, PEI1.

Notes for THEOPHILUS FOSTER MACKENZIE:

"Toff" as he was affectionately called was a Bachelor although he was romantically linked with "Miss Hattie Gordon" a School Teacher at the Cavendish School (her picture is on file). Apparently Toff proposed to her but was turned down, and Lucy Maud relates a tale of Toff driving Miss Gordon home from a Lecture by Rev. Carruthers in the Village Hall (also on file). Lucy Maud refers to "Toff" quite often in her many Diaries (copies on file), he apparently was a favorite of hers.

Toff remained a Bachelor and lived at home and looked after his Mother until his death at age 71.

Notes for BENJAMIN FOSTER WOOLNER:

WOOLNER, B. Licenses Fee Book - Marriages 1866-1870, B. Woolner, California, to Flora McNeill (Spinster) North Rustico, by Rev. J. Murray, Bondsman John McNeill, Granted 14 Oct. 1869, Pg, 88.

In a communication from Marshall Woolner the following story is related, "Benjamin came to PEI when he was about 4 years old and when he was 28 or 29 he left for the gold fields of California. He took a ship to New York, and from there also by ship to the Isthmus of Panama. He joined a mule train over the Sierras that form the spine of the Isthmus and down to the Pacific side. He booked passage on a ship to San Francisco. There he worked the gold fields for a time, then purchased land and began to cultivate it. He cultivated as much as 400 acres, and after almost 10 years felt comfortable in taking a wife, so he travelled back to PEI and courted and married Flora. I'm sure the trip back was by train, since the transcontinental railroad was complete in May 1869 and regular service was inaugurated in June 1869."

He married SARAH AMELIA MOORE1 Sep 28, 1870 in by George J. Milligan, Wesleyan Minister,Charlottetown, PEI1, daughter of EDWARD MOORE and ANN BARNARD. She was born Aug 09, 1848 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada1, and died May 27, 1887 in Alberton, Prince Edward Island, Canada1.

Notes for JOHN ROBERT MACKENZIE:

In the 1871 Lovell's Directory for Alberton John Robert is listed as Blacksmith, and later as a Carpenter.

ON FILE A letter received from the Henderson County Historical Society for the Goshen Cemetery: In volume 1, Cemetery Records of Henderson County (Out of Print) on Page 94, the following notations: Goshen Cemetery McKenzie, J. Robert, Died Aug 9, 1879 Age 32 yrs. 7 mos. "To My Beloved Husband" Knights of Honor Lodge #1135. also see Mary W. L. daughter. It is unknown why John Robert would leave Alberton, PEI and head to Saginaw Michigan with a wife and young daughter Alice, and after the birth of twin girls and the death of Alice, then 2 yrs of age, would once again travel farther south to Goshen, Texas, now a ghost town. Goshen, located on the Smith Robinson Survey on the Tyler to Porter's Bluff Road (6 miles east of Eustace). One of the early major trading centers in Henderson County. The first business was a general merchandise established in 1870 by Murchison, Coleman and Warren. The second business was established by John K. Jones which dissolved in 1881, and reopened and continued until 1885. Another business was J.O. Gossett, Carpenter and Cabinets, unknown when started, could this be where John Robert worked. See documents in Document binder in Library.

One of the twin girls, Mary, passed away in Goshen, at the age of 3 1/2, and two more children, Mattie in 1878 and Robert in 1879 were born. John Robert died in August of 1879 stopping a team of runaway horses and shortly thereafter Sarah his widow left Texas to return to Canada. This was a spunky lady to travel the length of the continent with 3 small children in tow. More on Sarah's life is in her file. Notes for SARAH AMELIA MOORE:

Sarah Amelia Moore, married John Robert MacKenzie Sept. 28, 1870. On their wedding day Edward Moore presented his Daughter with a bible and stated that it was "A Gift", this bible is in the possession of Shelly (Boekema)MacLeod(Janet, William Elton, Wm. Maxwell MacKenzie,John MacLean Robertson).

Photo copies of the pertinent pages is in my "Document" file in my Library(Rita Offer) They lived on PEI in Alberton, as Alice Rachel was born there in 1873, some time thereafter they heading to the USA, where in Sept of 1875 twin girls were born, Georgina Paschal and Mary Wilson Larue (Laroc). Some time in the next two to three years they travelled to Goshen, Henderson County, Texas where Mattie Snow, named after the Dr. Snow who assisted at her birth, was born in June of 1878. The next year in January 1879 Mary Wilson passed away and is buried in the Goshen Cemetry which is the only reminder of the town that once was there. in July of that same year Edward Robert "Bob" was born and shortly after John Robert was killed on Aug. 9, when he gave up his life to stop a runaway team of horses. Ironically enough some thirty-two years later John Herman Robertson, Matties brother-in-law was to suffer the same fate, both widows lost husbands and gained? medals. John Roberts widow was given a medal to honor him and sometime within the next year Sarah, with baby Bob, Mattie (just over 1 year) and Georgina (about 4 ) travelled back to Canada and PEI. The 1881 Census shows Sarah as living in Alberton, where she taught piano lessons in her home to help support her. Tom Offer (grandson of Mattie) possess the school bell that belonged to Sarah and was believed to have been used by her to teach school in Texas, as told to us by Nannie, Mattie Snow "MacKenzie" Robertson.

CENSUS 1881, Lot 4 (Alberton) McKenzie, Sarah/ F/ 32, PEI, Georgina P./ F./ 6, USA. Mattie S./F./3,/ USA Edward R./M./2/ USA., shortly thereafter Sarah married Alexander Meggison and sent Georgina to live with her Grandfather Edward Moore in Charlottetown and Mattie and Edward were sent to their Grandfather MacKenzie in Cavendish. More on Sarah and her life with Alexander Meggison in the files on "Meggisons".

Great grandfather MacNeil gave him the name of Leander "after him who swam the Hellespont". He was never over-grateful to Great-grandfather for this-nor do I wonder at it!He went to Prince of Wales College and from there to Edinburgh University. When he graduated from it he took a position as teacher-of mathematics I think, although I am not sure - in Prince of Wales College, and soon after he was married to Janie Perkins of Charlottetown. 25. MATTIE SNOW6 MACKENZIE (JOHN ROBERT5, MARGARET MARY4 WOOLNER, ROBERT FORSTER3, JAMES2, JAMES1)3 was born Jun 21, 1878 in Goshen, Henderson County, Texas, USA3, and died Oct 31, 1965 in Summerside, PEI3. She married WILLIAM ELTON ROBERTSON3 Jul 27, 18983, son of WILLIAM ROBERTSON and JULIA PARKMAN. He was born Sep 01, 1871 in Mayfield, Cavendish, PEI3, and died Apr 13, 1952 in Summerside, PEI3.

Notes for MATTIE SNOW MACKENZIE:

The name "Snow" in Nannies name came from the Doctor who delivered her. I remember the times that Tom and I used to go out to Louthers in Bedeque to visit Nannie, she was always a sharp old lady and if the paper was hidden she would say "What's going on that they won't let me read the paper". When we told her that we were getting married (Me being a Catholic and Tom a Presbyterian) Nannie laughed and said "And what does McKay (Pronounced McKie/Presbyterian Minister) think of that. Nannie loved her "Spoonful" of brandy before bed and Tom and I took her a bottle about every month and it was not until after her passing that we found out that other relatives were doing about the same so Nannie had more than a Spoon before bed. Just before her death she was in the hospital with pneumonia and the Nurse went into her room one night to find her sitting up in a chair. "What are you doing in that chair, you'll have to get back in bed", "No" said Nannie "I'm not getting into that bed as I can't sleep with all that crackling and I haven't had my Brandy" (Nan was in an oxygen tent and they were like a huge plastic bag around the bed and they did crackle). I remember the night Nannie died, Tom, Paul and I were having supper at our apartment on Granville St. and Paul dropped his knife and it landed in his milk glass, handle down, and no milk spilled and the glass didn't break. Right away I turned to Tom and said "Someone in your family is going to die tonight", this was my Irish upbringing - fore runners they were called. It was just a half hour later that Tom's Mom phoned to say that Nannie had passed away.

Notes for WILLIAM ELTON ROBERTSON:

The Robertson's lived on the farm of Grandfather John McLean Robertson who willed the 83 Acre farm in Cavendish to Elton, with the stipulation that Elton look after his Grandmother Isabella. When the farmhouse burned down the only things that were recovered were the Family clock, which now belongs to William Ernest Robertson, and is being kept for him by Tom Offer, the organ was also saved and later made into two tables, one is owned by Frances Offer, daughter of Elton, and the other by Enid Boekema, daughter of late Janet Mill, daughter of Elton. The other two legs of the organ were given in payment to the maker of the tables for his labour. Grandfather, "Pa", Robertson moved to Summerside from Cavendish in 1913 and ranched at St. Patricks Ranch on the Pope Road in St. Eleanors, in 1920 he became a mail courier for Sherbrooke and Travellers Rest retiring in 1940.

He then looked after horses for Elmer Offer, husband of Frances, that were used for Milk delivery for Ideal Dairy and the horses were housed in a barn, since torn down, on St. Stephen Street, behind the Guardian Office. Pa loved horses and was an expert horseman, we have a photo of him on a cart with one of his horses.

He taught Tom, grandson, son of Frances, how to swear and one time Pa told Tom to tell Mr. McKenna, who operated a bakery in the old Agricultural Building that used to be on Central Street, that he was a "Dirty Son of a B----". Tom ran up to Mr. McKenna and said "Pa said to say you were a Dirty Son of a B----". Needless to say Mr. McKenna chewed out Pa.

"pa" was a mail carried for the Travellers Rest area and we have the Renewal contract for 1937 on file, in the Documents binder in my Library. He was 66 at the time.

Notes for FRANCES DOROTHY ROBERTSON:

Pa worked on the St. Patricks Ranch on Pope Road in St. Eleanors and two men that worked there were Frank McNeill and Arthur Allen. Frances was named after Frank and her middle name was after Art's girlfriend.

Best Man and Matron of Honour were Mr. and Mrs. Robert H. Cameron (Georgie and Spoonie), sister and brother-in-law respectively of the Groom. The bride has been a very polular member of the sales staff of the footwear department of the firm of Sinclair and Stewart, Ltd.

Francis is a Past President of the Kinette Club of Summerside and is a member of the K'ettes (members over 40). Her other interests were curling and most of her adult life has been occupied with raising her two boys and helping in the Office of Ideal Dairy. Her greatest love is "The Shore" as she loves gardening and her vegetables are bountiful each and every year.

Notes for GEORGE ELMER OFFER:

"Summerside Man's marvellous escape on eve of wedding". See newspaper article about accident on the eve of wedding involving Elmer and Bill Roach's borrowed automobile.

Friends in Charlottetown knew Elmer as "Spug", he was active in Sports and managed a hockey team, curled for years and also sponsored a bowling team.

Elmer was a Butter Maker by trade and worked for Perfection Foods in Charlottetown before moving to Summerside in 1937 to open "Ideal Dairy". He ran the dairy at 20 Central Street until his sons bought him out in 1973, Tom and Paul ran it for 5 years, then Paul changed careers and Tom continued to operate the "Dairy" until 1988 when it was sold. The building remained in the family until 1993 when it was sold. Mother continued to live there until 2000 when she moved to an apartment on Linden Avenue.

The building burned on May 1st, 2001 and the next night again caught fire and completely gutted the structure, it was later torn down and is now a vacant lot (Feb. 25, 2003)

Notes for LUCY MAUD MONTGOMERY:

Excerpt from L.M.Montgomery Volume 11, 1910-1921//The morning of July 5th (1911) was cool and gray, threatening rain. But it did not rain and in the evening it cleared up beautifully. Mr., Stirling came over to marry us. I was very sorry that Margaret could not come also. I had not many guests - just Aunt Emily, her son Jimmy and daughter Charlotte., Aunt Mary Montgomery and Cuthbert, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Ramsay (Uncle John Campbell's next-door neighbors and great friends), Aunt Margaret Sutherland, Marian and Leigh, Bruce and Vivian Howatt. As I stood dressed in my room and heard the guests arriving I thought sadly of one guest who should have been there-whom I had always dreamed of having with me when I was married-who would have been so glad to be there but who, instead of helping to robe me for my bridal, was sleeping in Cavendish graveyard, her once so-busy helpful hands folded on her breast. Poor Tillie! If she could only have been at my wedding.
