1875 Ships in Ch'town Port.

We have now upwards of fifty thousand tons of shipping. To our neighbors in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, this may appear a rather small exhibit. But it must be remembered that the chief industry of this Island is agriculture; and, moreover, those who engage in ship-building make a practice of selling their new ships in the British and foreign markets, and of registering them at other ports. Therefore, the number of ships registered at the Custom House in Charlottetown does not fairly represent our shipping, nor do our ships accumulate in the same proportion as in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, where ships are not so generally sold as they
are here. It is, we think, a pity, that our people do not more generally own and receive the profits of the ships they build.
