Descendants of John Brecken, UEL

This file is a work in progress and corrections or additions are welcome.

Generation No. 1

1. JOHN1 BRECKEN was born possibly in Northallerton, Yorkshire, England, and died March 06, 1827 in Kingston-upon-Hull, Yorkshire, England. He married ANN WAKE June 04, 1772 in Kirk Leavington, Yorkshire, England, daughter of RALPH WAKE. She was born 1729 in York, Yorkshire, England, and died May 15, 1811 in Charlottetown, Lot 33, PEI.

Notes for JOHN BRECKEN:

United Empire Loyalist. Possibly an English officer, but a John Brecken is mentioned on a memorial of New York Loyalists.

26 July 1784: Arrived at Charlotte Town from Sherbourne, NS, by himself, Loyalist, granted land Bedeque.

31 July 1784: Warrant of Survey for Loyalist John Brecken.

28 May 1792: 1st Volunteer Royal Highland Emigrant Regiment of Charlottetown.

1798 Census: Charlottetown & Royalty, household of 11.

From the Old Protestant Burying Grounds Website: "John Brecken - a United Empire Loyalist, arrived here from Sherbourne in 1784 with his wife, Ann, who died at the age of 82 in 1811. John became a merchant in Charlottetown and owned a business, John Brecken and Company. He was elected to the House of Assembly in 1785. Prior to 1826, he left his business to his grandsons, and he sailed for England, where he died. His grandson, Ralph, was a merchant and exporter; he was elected to the House of Assembly and became Speaker of the House in 1812. He was a Lieutenant in the Militia, and a Justice of the Peace. He became a leading spokesman for the tenantry in the Assembly. His bride was Matilda Robinson, a daughter of Lt. Col. Joseph Robinson. Ralph died in 1813, and Matilda in 1842, age 65. It was one of Ralph's sons-in-law who established the Macdonald Consolidated School in Mt. Herbert."

Excerpt from An Island Refuge: "Loyalist JOHN BRECKEN, accompanied by his wife Ann and their teen-age son, arrived at Charlotte Town on July 26, 1784, from Shelburne, Nova Scotia. On board the vessel were seventeen Loyalists, ten disbanded soldiers, ten women and twenty-two children drawn to the Island of Saint John by Governor Patterson's promise of land.

John Brecken's five hundred acre loyalist grant was situated in Lot 25. He did not settle on his grant but chose to remain at the capital. A fiat signed on September 17, 1784, by Isaac Swan stated: "that John Brecken be able to choose a Town and Pasture Lot in Charlotte Township." The request was granted and it is there we find John Brecken, a merchant, with his business, John Brecken & Company, located on the north corner of Queen and Water Streets.

He immediately became interested in the affairs of the colony and was elected to the House of Assembly in 1785. The 1798 census shows him the head of a household of eleven living in the Royalty of Charlotte Town. As well as successfully conducting his mercantile business, he invested extensively in real estate, as shown by his will. Research had revealed no information on John Brecken prior to his arrival at Shelburne. However, he must have had ties with England because some time before 1826 he left his business in the hands of his grandsons, John and Ralph Brecken, and sailed for England. When he made his will on May 12, 1826, he was living at Kingston-upon-Hull, County of York. It was there he died on March 6, 1827.

Notes for MATILDA ROBINSON:

As a small child Matilda was directly affected by the events of the American Revolution. Her family's plantation in South Carolina was burned to the ground by Patriot forces in an attempt to kill her father, the intrepid Virginian-born commander of the South Carolina Royalists, although he was then in hiding among the Cherokee Indians. Matilda, her mother, and older sister Rebecca were rescued from the flames by a loyal female slave, who was then captured by the attackers (and valued in a list of losses by her owner after the war as a "valuable Negro wench" worth, along with her child, 75 pounds) Mrs. Robinson was interrogated by the Patriots as to her husbands whereabouts but refused their bribery and was released. She and her children then sought refuge with her father's family in Virginia, a dangerous journey of 800 miles. When the war was over, her husband took his family to settle in Florida, which they had to leave when it was ceded as a colony to Spain. Subsequently, on their way to settle in Jamaica, they faced death again when they were shipwrecked and set upon by sharks. Once again they were rescued by their slaves. Their luck was no better in the West Indies and after three years living in New Brunswick, Colonel Robinson was eventually persuaded by his fellow Loyalist, Lt-Governor Edmund Fanning, to settle on the Island of St. John. Robinson then became active in the political life of the Island and was later celebrated for his dashing role in the Revolutionary War.

Notes for HON THOMAS HEATH HAVILAND:

From the Old Protestant Burying Grounds Website: "Hon. Thomas W. Haviland - a land agent, served as Colonial Treasurer, Colonial Secretary, Member of the Executive and Legislative Council, and Mayor of Charlottetown, making him one of the most important men in P.E.I., between 1820 to 1860. He built "Fairholm" in 1838-39 which still stands on the corner of Prince and Fitzroy Streets"

From the Fairholm & Carriage House Website- "Fairholm in Charlottetown was built ca. 1839 for Thomas Heath Haviland (1795-1867). A noteworthy figure in the early development of Prince Edward Island, Haviland resided in the house until 1855 when he sold it to the Honourable Charles Young (1812-1892), another central character in the Island's history. The house itself has been described as the house that most closely represents the Picturesque villa as a type in Atlantic CanadaAn energetic, upwardly mobile young man, he soon gained himself the position of provost marshall in the naval yards. Other positions of importance and influence followed: in 1823 he was named to the Executive Council, and in 1824 he became assistant judge of the Supreme Court. Subsequently, Haviland became Colonial Secretary, Registrar , and Clerk of the Executive and Legislative Councils...Haviland opposed the move towards responsible government, which was granted in 1851 despite his preferencesHaviland was elected Mayor of Charlottetown in 1857, an election which he won several times in subsequent years.

Haviland's career, marked by sinecure and old boy-ism, was symptomatic of the oligarchical character of the colonial administrations of the early 19th century in British North America. Price Edward Island, like the mainland colonies, was governed by a clique of men connected by blood and by class; Haviland was related to seven of the eight men o of the Island's "Family Compact. His biographer has referred to him as "... the perfect embodiment of the old regime before the arrival of responsible government in 1851..." Fairholm was a mark of Haviland's personal prosperity, and it reflected the growing prosperity of the Island at this time as well."

Founder of Peake shipbuilding and shipping company; builder of Peake's Quay and Peake House, Charlottetown. His brother Thomas captained their ships that ran between PEI and Plymouth where they maintained a shipchandlery.

Biographical sketch

James Ellis Peake, who emigrated from Plymouth, England to Charlottetown in 1823, was a merchant and shipowner of Prince Edward Island. He married a daughter of Ralph Brecken and Mathilda Robinson. In 1841, he sat on the Executive Council with John Brecken and Thomas Heath Haviland, the colonial secretary who had married another daughter of the Breckens. At this time, James Peake was the major shipbuilder in the colony.

Peake may have begun his own firm in the year following his arrival in Prince Edward Island. After 1824, he also appears to have been associated with the Brecken firm. In 1825, he purchased his first sailing vessel, one of 152 vessels which he would own over the next thirty-five years. These vessels were usually in the North Atlantic trade, mainly between Prince Edward Island or a New Brunswick timber port, and either Liverpool or Plymouth.

Peake's vessels were also involved in the coastal trade, carrying out island produce and picking up timber cargoes for transatlantic voyages. These investments marked him as one of the largest owners of shipping in eastern Canada during the first half of the nineteenth century. Peake was also engaged in other activities which were related to his maritime interests.

Peake owned several stores at which he sold the goods which he imported on his own vessels. He also acted as a broker for marine insurance, and operated a ship chandlery and outfitting business. Additionally, he dabbled in other mercantile activities until his death In 1856, Peake had become ill and returned to England where he died, May 4, 1860.

From the College Street Public School Fathers of Confederation Website:

Thomas Heath Haviland, born in Charlottetown November 13, 1822, was brought up in a political atmosphere; his father had been in politics longer than the son could remember. Young Haviland received his elementary education in Charlottetown and his higher education in Brussels. He was articled in law and was called to the bar in 1846.

At the very early age of twenty-five, he became a member of the legislative assembly and acted, in turn, as colonial secretary, speaker of the house, solicitor general. In 1870, he was appointed to the legislative council and again acted as colonial secretary.

Haviland was not at the Charlottetown meeting, but he and Whelan were the two additional representatives in the larger delegation sent to Quebec. In their group of five,

Palmer steadily became anti-confederate, but Haviland, Gray, Pope and Whelan became enthusiastic supporters of confederation and stoutly defended it in public.

But the people were not ready for confederation; they preferred going-it-alone. When harder times came and debts piled up, they were ready to listen to new proposals from Canada. Haviland was one of three commissioners who succeeded in arranging the better terms that brought the Island into the confederation fold in 1873.

Following this, Haviland was given a seat in the Canadian senate. Six years later he resigned to become lieutenant governor of the island province.

From The Life of the Party by Wayne E. MacKinnon, provided by Daphne Schober: "A committee of the Assembly investigated the connections and interests of members of both Councils and found that most of them were related by blood or marriage. For example, among the Executive Council they found that George Wright, father-in-law to the Protonotary, was a brother-in-law to Hon. Robert Hodgson, who was a cousin to Hon. John Brecken, who was a brother-in-law to T. H. Haviland, Colonial Secretary and Proprietor's agent, who in turn was a brother-in-law to Hon. Donald MacDonald and to Hon. James Peake. Hon. Joseph Pope, a Proprietor's agent, was connected by marriage to Hon. George Wright, and to Hon. J.S. MacDonald, and was a cousin to Hon. Donald MacDonald, a proprietor's agent, who was a brother-in-law to Hon. John Brecken and to Hon. James Peake. Hon. Ambrose Lane was a brother-in-law to the Treasurer, who was also Hon Robert Hodgson's brother-in-law. In its report the Assembly concluded that a family compact of such magnitude..will take care of themselves and their friends in the first place and the interests of the Colony only as a secondary consideration".

Obituary: "On Saturday night, Hon. G.W. DeBlois died very suddenly at his residence, Devonport Cottage [on the Malpeque Road], in Charlottetown. Deceased had been ailing for some days, but was in his usual spirits all day, and ate a hearty dinner. About five o'clock, while walking outside the house, he dropped suddenly, and died a few minutes after being carried in. His daughter, Miss Bessie DeBlois, was at the house of a neighbor, when her father was taken ill. She had been troubled for some time with an affection of the heart, and the sad news was conveyed to her with the greatest possible care. She became greatly agitated upon hearing the news, but after a time fell asleep. Shortly after one of her brothers entered the room, but before he reached her bedside, her spirit, too, had taken its flight.

Mr. George Wastie DeBlois, was born at Halifax, Nova Scotia, on the 12th July, 1824. He had, therefore, just entered upon his 63rd year. His ancestors came from France to England, whence descendants of the family emigrated to the American Colonies. His grand-father was a loyalist, who settled at Halifax after the close of the revolutionary war. His father, Stephen DeBlois, Esq., was a merchant at Halifax. He was educated at the Windsor Collegiate School, and in Scotland and France. At the age of 23 he married Sarah Frances, daughter of the late Hon. Thomas T. Haviland, of this Island, and energetically commenced business for himself at Charlottetown. For twenty years he managed a number of the largest proprietory estates in this Province, as also different agencies. He was elected a member of the House of Assembly for Charlottetown in 1876, and became a member of, and secretary for, the Coalition government, organized in that year. He resigned from that government in 1878; was re-elected for the General election of 1879, as a supporter of the Sullivan Government, but refused office, and retired from political life in 1882.

The bereaved family have, in this great affliction, the sincere condolence of all our people; and the JOURNAL tenders its warm sympathy to those who mourn."

From The Royal Gazette, 31 Aug 1847, "MARRIED, On Thursday morning,

by the Rev. Dr. Jenkins, Ecclesiastical Commissary, GEORGE W. DEBLOIS,

Esq., of Halifax, Nova Scotia, to SARAH FRANCES, second daughter of the

Hon. T. H. Haviland, Colonial Secretary of this Island."

Below the said entry was noted, "In noticing the above interesting

event, we are sure that one feature connected with it, will long be

remembered with feelings of gratification by all the parties

interested. We allude to the general tribute of respect paid by this

community to the Hon. Colonial Secretary and his family, by persons of

all ranks and classes attending at the Parish Church on this happy

occasion. The church was densely crowded, long before the arrival of

the bridal party. We are sure we but speak the general feeling of the

community when we wish long life, health, and happiness to the youthful

pair, whose destinies were on that day linked together."
