The Campbell's of DeSable, Lot 29

This CAMPBELL family tree being a subset of my "MacPHAILS of Argyle Shore, Lot 30, PEI" tree begins with the following Fourth Generation entry taken from that tree. The descendants are all from Mary McPHAIL and Roderick CAMPBELL who came to PEI in 1810 and 1808 respectively. Roderick's parents are shown but his parents' parents are not known. His son Alexander by his first wife is mentioned but Alexander's descendants are not included here as they are not a part of the MacPHAIL tree. Roderick apparently had two sisters whose names are known from the Scottish Records, but who either remained in Scotland at the time of the 1808 departure or were deceased by then. He also had a brother Duncan who came to PEI with Roderick. No descendants of these latter people are included.

Please Note: The spelling of names used in this tree is based on the spelling used by the individual at the end of his or her life. None of the family who died before 1910 seem to have used the MacPHAIL spelling. All used McPHAIL. My own great-grandmother McPHAIL, a widow, insisted to her dying day in 1924, that her name was McPHAIL and that she was not changing the spelling to that used by her children!

Comments, additions and revisions to this tree are most welcome. Please send to

The Campbell's of DeSable

Fourth Generation

35. Mary McPHAIL (John3, John2, Alexander ?1). Born in 1784 in Killiemor, Mull, Argyll, Scot. Mary was baptized in Killiemor, Kilninian & Kilmore Parish, Mull, on 7 Nov 1784. Mary died in DeSable, Lot 29, Queen's County, PEI, on 1 Jun 1833; she was 49. Buried in Argyle Shore Cemetery. Occupation: Housewife. Religion: Church Of Scotland. User ID: MP1111.

- She is thought to have come to PEI with her uncle Malcolm McPhail in 1810.

Abt 1812 Mary married Roderick CAMPBELL, son of John CAMPBELL (abt 1752-aft 1808) & Isobel CAMPBELL (abt 1752-aft 1808), in PEI. He was born in 1777/1778 in Ardnacross, K&K Parish, Mull, Arg., Scot. Roderick died in DeSable, Lot 29, Queen's County, PEI, aft 1861. Occupation: Farmer. User ID: CB12.

- Appears in 1779 Census of Mull at Ardnacross, K&K as a son of a fencible man . His mother and grandmother were keeping house but his father was away.

- He is believed to have married a Miss McEachern on Mull and by her had a son Alexander.

- To PEI on Clarendon in 1808 with parents, brother Donald & son Alexander.

- Likely worked with father and brother to establish homestead at DeSable before getting own farm near Westmoreland Harbour, Lot 29. He is shown on 150 ac. property at the southeast corner of the Westmoreland Harbour in the map made from the survey of January 1818. There are two dwellings shown beside the Tryon Road. The road from the seacoast to Hampton later followed the east side of the property. In the 1880 Atlas map Roderick's property has been divided into 3 lots of 50 acres owned by Thos. Bullpitt, Abraham Meyers and William Patrick.

- Died likely at home of son Alexander near DeSable as he was there in 1861 Census of Lot 29.

Mary McPhail and Roderick Campbell had the following children:

46 i. Donald (1814-1896)

47 ii. John (~1815-1865)

48 iii. Gelean (~1816-)

49 iv. Hector (1817-1873)

50 v. Archibald (1818-1901)

51 vi. Roderick (~1820-)

52 vii. Malcolm (~1821-)

53 viii. Alexander (~1822-)

54 ix. Isabella (1823-1852)

55 x. Neil (~1824-)

56 xi. James (1831-1882)

57 xii. Flora (1826-<1841)

Fifth Generation

46. Donald CAMPBELL (Mary McPHAIL4, John3, John2, Alexander ?1). Born on 14 Feb 1814 in Westmoreland Harbour, Queen's Co, P.E.I. Donald was baptized in Charlotte Town, PEI, on 30 Apr 1814. Donald died in St. Peter's Point, Lot 65, PEI, on 11 May 1896; he was 82. Occupation: Farmer @ DeSable, Crapaud. Liv @ Chtn, Sside Hotel. Religion: Free Ch. Of Scot. User ID: MP11111 CB122.

4 sons & 4 daughters

- He is of Crapaud in 1858 baptism of daughter Cathrine.

The 1861 Census shows a DONALD CAMPBELL in the register for Lot 29, page 9, 3rd entry down which places him north of DeSable. The family has DONALD born 1801/16, his wife born 1816/40, two sons and one daughter born 1845/56 and a daughter born 1856/61. Of the 6 members of the family, 3 were born in PEI and 3 in "Other Colonies". This record is consistent with our knowledge of DONALD and Fanny and the family. It also indicates another son, name unknown, born 1845/56, possibly in New Brunswick.

- The 1861 Census also shows that all are Kirk of Scotland; Donald has 50 acres of quality 3 land of which only 10 acres are arable; he holds the land under a verbal agreement; in previous year he produced 45 bushels each of barley and oats, 5 bu. of buckwheat, 400 bu. of potatoes and 10 bu. of turnips. The family also produced 14 yards of fulled cloth and 90 yeards of non-fulled cloth. He had 2 sheep and 4 hogs.

- CATHERINE CAMPBELL HALLORAN (MP111114) related memories to her daughter NORA (MP1111144) that this family lived in Crapaud, Charlottetown and Summerside, PEI, and that they moved from Charlottetown to Summerside after their house burned. This would be prior to the 1881 Census in the spring of that year as they were recorded in Summerside. The memories state that the family lost the funds from the sale of the farm at Crapaud in that fire. The Crapaud farm is thought to be the property that had belonged to DONALD's brother HECTOR (MP11113). It was located at the shore end of the road from Hampton to the strait and was 50 acres. When HECTOR's wife Nancy died in 1862, HECTOR was left with a number of young children to raise. Perhaps DONALD and his family moved to the original Campbell farm at that time, later acquired it from HECTOR and then sold it by 1879 to Thomas Bullpitt. It appears in Bullpitt's name in the Atlas of PEI compiled that year and published in 1880. In the 1880 Atlas of PEI, Donald Campbell, is shown as proprietor of the Campbell Hotel in Summerside and appears as a patron of the book.

On 22 Feb 1844 Donald married Frances (FANNY) Sarah FLEIGHER, daughter of John Henry FLEIGHER (1754-1819) & Mary Jane BROWN (1763-1847), in Westmorland Harbour, Lot 29, PEI. John Herbert Read was the minister and the witnesses were John H. Flieger and Archibald Campbell. She was born in 1822 in Nova Scotia. Buried in Wilmot Valley, Lot 25, PEI. Occupation: Housewife. Religion: Free Ch. Of Scot.

Name given as Flaigher in baptismal record of daughter Catherine in 1858.

They had the following children:

114 i. Son______ (1845-?)

115 ii. William (~1847-)

116 iii. Francis (FRANK) (~1849-)

117 iv. Henry M(cPhail?) (1852-?)

118 v. Mary Jane (1855-?)

119 vi. Catherine (1858-)

120 vii. Rebecca (RITA) (1863-)

121 viii. Mary (MOLLY) (1864-)

47. John CAMPBELL (Mary McPHAIL4, John3, John2, Alexander ?1). Born abt 1815 in Westmoreland Harbour, Lot 29, Queen's County, PEI. John died in DeSable, Lot 29, Queen's County, PEI, on 19 Oct 1865; he was 50. Buried in Argyle Shore Cemetery. Occupation: Farmer. User ID: MP11112 CB123.

They appear in the 1861 Lot 29 Census pg 18 line 11 as male b.1801/16, female b.1816/40, two females b.1840/45, one male b.1845/56. Two are married and three are single. All are Kirk of Scot. His has been leasing his land for 21 years (1840)

On 1 Feb 1842 John married Margaret McPHAIL (60) , daughter of Neil McPHAIL (37) (12 Oct 1787-22 Feb 1877) & Isabelle (Isobel?) McINNES (1787/1788-Sep 1860). Margaret was born on 4 Mar 1819 in Argyle Shore, Lot 30, Queen's County, PEI and was baptized in St. Paul's Anglican Church, Charlotte Town, on 6 Jul 1819. Margaret died aft 1881. Religion: Church Of Scotland. User ID: MP11413.

She is a widow living with daughter Isabella McDonald in 1881 Census.

They had the following children:

122 i. Mary (1842-1927)

123 ii. Isabella (BELLA) (1845-1888)

48. Gelean CAMPBELL (Mary McPHAIL4, John3, John2, Alexander ?1). Born abt 1816 in Westmoreland Harbour, Lot 29, PEI. User ID: MP11113 CB124.

He is known only from family memories which state that most of the sons went to sea and that one of these sons went to Australia after his wife died.

49. Cap't Hector CAMPBELL (Mary McPHAIL4, John3, John2, Alexander ?1). Born in 1817 in Westmoreland Harbour, Lot 29, Queen's County, PEI. Hector died in Lot 9, PEI, on 1 Apr 1873; he was 56. Buried in Argyle Shore Cemetery. Occupation: Sea Captain. Religion: Free Church Of Scotland. User ID: MP11114 CB125.

5 sons & 3 daughters

- In the 1841 Census he was the married 16 - 25 year old with his new bride of the same age range counted in his father's home near DeSable, Lot 29, PEI. It is possible that his wedding celebration was still going on. HECTOR likely had begun his sailing career by then, sailing from Westmoreland Harbour near Crapaud. It is thought that HECTOR took over the original Campbell farm at Westmoreland Harbour from his father when the latter moved to near DeSable sometime before the 1841 Census. In the 1861 Census of Lot 29, HECTOR and his family appear on page 5 near Crapaud, Lot 29 with a land holding of 50 acres which is held by Verbal Agreement from the land owner [presumably his father Roderick]. This was a form of land rental without a lease document. At that time HECTOR is a captain. The 1863 Lake Map shows Cap't H. CAMPBELL at the shore end of the road from Hampton, Lot 29 to the coast. Thos Bullpitt held this property at the time of the 1880 Atlas Map of Lot 29. It is suspected that this property went to HECTOR's brother DONALD, perhaps not long after HECTOR's wife Nancy died in 1862. DONALD then would have sold it to Bullpitt by 1879 when the Atlas of PEI was being compiled.

Allan Stewart J.P. and Arch McCalder were the witnesses. Text of will above with form and spelling used by HECTOR CAMPBELL. In effect, HECTOR gives his entire estate to his eldest son with a secondary proviso for the two youngest daughters who were unmarried. Interestingly, he went back to Crapaud, Lot 29 to make his will.

On 1 Apr 1841 Hector married Ann (NANCY) DARRACH, daughter of Duncan DARRACH (1777/1778-1849/1853) & Margaret (PEGGY) McMILLAN (1779/1780-), in Clyde River, Lot 31, PEI. - It appears that they farmed with his father at DeSable, Lot 29 until after 1868 then moved to the Brae area in Lot 9, PEI where they settled on the farm previously occupied by Wm. Moreshead, leasing it from Charlotte A. Sullivan, the proprietress. They later purchased the property, possibly after the Canadian government action took control of the PEI lands from the original London landowners and their heirs in 1875.

ARCHIE is shown as the postmaster at Brae in the 1880 Atlas of PEI and the Brae Post Office was in his home on his 90 acre farm on the west bank of the Brae River. He also had 38 acres behind the farms of his neighbours. The list of patrons confirms that he was born in PEI and gives the date of settlement of his property as 1819. He and his family are still to be checked in Lot 9 information and for 1861 in Lots 29 & 30. His youngest son ANGUS (111144) remained on the farm with him and recieved it at his death.

On 23 Mar 1848 when Archibald was 30, he married Catherine DARRACH, daughter of Duncan DARRACH (1777/1778-1849/1853) & Margaret (PEGGY) McMILLAN (1779/1780-), in Clyde River Baptist Ch., Rev. Silas F. Rand, Baptist minister; witnesses Malcolm Darrach & Arch. McKinnon.. Born in 1822/1823 in Dog River, Lot 31, PEI. Catherine died in Brae, Lot 9, PEI, on 12 Sep 1897; she was 75.
