Notes for WILLIAM (CROSBIE) CROSBY:

According to an LDS record found on March 3, 2006, submitted by Carol Coombs, William was born app 1734 in Parish of Ballee, County Down, Ireland

William signed a contract to emigrate to Canada in Dublin. This was witnessed by a Mr. Stanhope. He came during the time frame that Thomas Desbrisary was advertising in Ireland for prospective settlers. His ad said: Desbrisay was looking for people who could not merely pay their passage money but also pay rents for their new lands. Applications were invited only from "Young Gentlemen and Farmers, of small fortunes, with or without families". Desbrisay was able to bring two groups from Ireland, one ship the Hopewell landed in 1771 and in 1772 the ship John & James sailed to St Johns Island. These ships were listed under the Ulster Immigration to Colonial America 1718-1775 by RJ Dickson. This info comes from the working sheets of the "Bonshaw Hills" book by William & Elizabeth Glen.

Patterson's ship is believed to have been a military ship and came via Halifax. It landed on August 30, 1770 at Fort Amherst. It is possible that the Hyde family from County Clare in Ireland were on the same ship. He came with Governor Patterson, as per notes from Grace Mutch. Patterson lived at Fort Amherst for several years, per email dated April 4, 2000, from Dave Hunter, The PEI Register. It is believed that William may have had military ties.

John's Obituary:

DEATH OF OUR OLDEST NATIVE - JOHN CROSBY

Islander Jan. 14, 1870

On Wednesday last, Jan.4th,1870, the oldest native of our Island, the venerable Mr. John Crosby, of West River, passed into the spirit world. His father came here from the North of Ireland one hundred years ago! and five years after his arrival, having married, was born the subject of this obituary, on April 16th,1775. Through this long lapse of years he lived and labored. Who shall tell the hardships through which he has struggled, inevitable with our early settlers. Who shall paint the picture of the past, and show the contrast with the present of our elevated Isle ! How the then roadless, bridgeless, comfortless Colony, has improved under the industry of our departed hero and his contempories ! What mutitudes of discontented inhabitants have departed from our shores, while this perservering veteran never in his life left the Island! During his century existence, what wonderous events have transpired in the world! What thousands have died since he began to live! And during the lengthened period of his life, what physical afflictions have been the portion of his contemporaries; - but, remarkable to relate he never suffered from any kind of sickness! His family consisted of eight stalwart sons - seven of these followed in his funeral procession, the youngest of whom is forty-six years old !

This venerable sire, - still able to read, which was his delight to the last - on Wednesday retired to his bed, feeling a little unwell, but with no pains in particular, and in the full vigor of his faculties, almost immediately dozed gently into thr sleep of death!! Thus died, at the ripe age of ninety five, the venerable John Crosby, leaving a widow still hale at eighty-five years, and numerous descendants to honor his memory, and to mourn their loss. Like Abraham of old, he "died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years." Thus, all, however long they live must die, and "the weary wheels of life stand still at last." "Our fathers, where are they? and the prophets, do they live forever? No, they are gone with the mighty millions of mankind. And we are crowding upon them, like the accumulated flood down the ceaseless river rolling to the sea - the ocean of eternity ! Reader, have you done all in this life you intend? Oh ! be up and doing, for "the night cometh when no man can work."

"Live to some purpose; make they life A gift of use to thee; A joy, a good, a golden hope, A heavenly argosy.

By request of the bereaved friends, a Funeral Sermon was delivered in the Wesleyan Church at Cornwall, on Sabbath evening last, from the words - "With long life will I satisfy him," - (Psalm xii: 16) by J. WINTERBOTHAM.

September 26, 1811 John & William purchased another 100 acres from John and Mary Cambridge at a cost of 65 Pounds. From the boundary description, this property adjoins farms they already own. The property is described as having a "Mill Creek" on it. John & William may have set up mills here prior to moving on to Lot 30.

When William Sr died, John took the western half of the homestead.

On April 2, 1844, John and Sarah make over to their son James Henry 40 acres in Lot 32 for the sum of 5 shillings. William sells 2 acres in Lot 32 for 40 shillings in 1844. John gave 50 acres in Lot 25 to Charles Archibald for the sum of 5 pounds on March 30, 1849.

He met JEMIMA CLARKE 27 March 1815 in Saint Pauls Anglican, Charlottetown, PE, daughter of JOHN CLARKE and FIRST CLARKE. She was born 29 June 1789 in Warren Farm, Fort Amherst, Rocky Point, PE, and died 14 January 1867 in Elliot River, PEI.

Notes for JR. WILLIAM CLARK CROSBY (CROSBIE):

William and his brother John married two sisters. William took over the homestead when William Sr died. He also built the first bridge at North River. He received 900 pounds, which works out to about 1 pound per foot.

September 1811, William & John (brother) purchased 100 acres from John Cambridge and his wife in Lot 32 for 64 pounds, Liber 21, Folio 79. This farm is adjacent to farms owned by William and John. The property has a mill creek and it is possible the two brothers set up mills prior to moving to Lot 30.

The PEI Gazette dated March 16, 1821, lists him as Fence Viewer for West and Dog river. It also lists him as a lumber surveyor.

In 1837, William leases 100 acres of land in Lot 30 from Samuel Cunard and purchases said land December 12, 1848, from David Stewart. This land becomes the site of the Crosby Mills, Liber 59, Folio 274.

In 1844 William sells 2 acres in Lot 32 to James Henry Crosby for 40 shillings, Liber 52, Folio 425.

December 6, 1851, he purchases 100 acres in Lot 30 from Stephen Rice on the south side of Green Road for 150 pounds, Liber 64, Folio 240.

William must have been a good church goer and interested in well being of his fellow christians as he and John Corbin, Zachariah Mayhew, John Boyle and James Kellow purchase land for a Methodist church in Lot 32 on August 16, 1842, Liber 50, Folio 380.

In the 1891 census, shows Elizabeth Crosby age 40, his aunt, and Archibald Clark from England age 83 shown as a farmer. Looks like Archibald would be his grandfather.

From The Examiner, Page 3, January 15, 1866, at his residence Elliot River, William Crosby, Esq, in the 82 year of his age.

In his will he leaves his farm at Eliot River and all its contents to his son John. John looked after his mother for her lifetime. His sons John and Andrew are to give her a yearly allowance of 12 pounds from the mills profits and lands he owns. He left 130 acres previously to his son Ewen on Lot 30. He left 130 acres in Lot 25 to his daughter Margaret and her husband. He left Hannah 60 pounds, and 50 pounds to Mary Elinor. Andrew received 100 acres of land on the old Tryon Road (now Green Road) and 45 acres of freehold on Lot 30 being the residue of land from the mill tract.

25. HANNAH MARIA5 CROSBY (JAMES HENRY CLARK4, JOHN WILLIAM CROSBY3 (CROSBIE), WILLIAM (CROSBIE)2 CROSBY, JOHN1) was born 28 October 1853 in Lot 32, Cornwall, PEI, and died 9 December 1939 in Cornwall, PE. She met HENRY DRAKE 14 February 1877 in Methodist Church, Cornwall, PE, Rev HP Coueperthwaite, son of ROBERT DRAKE and SUSANNAH BURHOE. He was born 2 January 1846 in West River, PE, and died 1 September 1916 in Cornwall, PE.

Notes for HANNAH MARIA CROSBY:

from Drake genealogy done by Dave Drake [email protected]

The original family home burned by fire in 1940. Current owner of this property was Roy Jewell. Duncan MacPhail of Cornwall built new house.

From Joan Gaeta [email protected]:: Henry Drake married Hannah Maria Crosby and they went to live on the Crosby family farm in Meadowbank municipality, near the village of Cornwall in PEI. They had a family of ten children all of whom were born on the farm with only the assistance of a Midwife. When Henry was going to marry Hannah, he was told that he had better buy her a coffin than a wedding ring as she was a delicate-looking girl. Very tall and slim with beautiful auburn hair and not the appearance of the necessary strength to take over the hard life of an island farmer. However, she out-lived Henry by many years and died of pneumonia and general old age at 85 never having been sick in her life.

Henry went out to his barn chores one morning before breakfast and when he didn't come in, Hannah went out and found him slumped in the barn doorway, dead.

One son, Frederick, died as an infant. He pulled a kettle of boiling water from the stove and was scalded. Wallace Drake: Remained at home on the farm all his life. He had a severe asthmatic condition which eventually caused his death.

Hammond Drake went to Boston as a young man. He got a job in a grocery store in an exclusive area of Boston as an errand boy. He remained with the same firm all his life an institution on his own. He married Gertrude who was a registered nurse and was a member of one of Boston's old family who had come to America with the Plymouth settlers. They had no family. Hammond was a wonderful man, very kind and well-loved. He was an ardent fisherman all his life.

Wilbert Drake: Went to Boston to work as a young man but returned to PEI to work on the home farm where he remained til his death. After Hannah died he lived there alone and died in his chair listening to the radio.

Notes for WILLIAM ROY CROSBY:

Obituary: William Roy Crosby

One year ago, on November 21, 1988 family and a wide circle of neighbors and friends were saddened by the death at the Garden Home of William Roy Crosby in his eighty-second year.

Roy was born in Meadowbank on August 4, 1907, the only son of Pope and Matilda (Hyde) Crosby. He lived all his life in Meadowbank where he was a successful farmer until 1976, when he sold the family farm and moved to a retirement home overlooking the acres he had so carefully tended. In February 1988, due to failing health, he entered the Garden Home.

Roy enjoyed all aspects of farm life, but horses were his special joy. It was his delight to work with them on the land and to drive them for pleasure. His favorite recreation was to be a part of the friendly competition at county race tracks.

Roy was a quiet and kindly disposed man whose reputation as a good neighbors was well known. His quality of character, his devotion to principle and his loyalty to the activities of his community and was a life-long member of the Cornwall United Church. The twin blessings of an excellent memory and a gentle sense of humor made him an excellent story teller of the times that were, but his horizon was not bounded by the borders of his community, for he was always well informed on the affairs of province and nation.

Left to cherish the memory of a loving husband is his wife, Margaret MacLeod, whom he married in 1953. He is also fondly remembered by his sister Laura of Charlottetown. His older sister, Helen, passed away in 1984.

His funeral was held from the Cutcliffe Funeral Chapel on November 24, 1988. Rev Ronald Cameron conducted a very impressive service. The Cornwall United Church Choir, with organist Phyllis Newman, led the people in singing the hymns: "What a Friend We Have in Jesus", and "In the Sweet Bye and Bye". Active pallbearers were George Ayers, Stanley Crosby, Lawson Drake, Douglas Hyde, Melvin Hyde, and Dave Vigneault. Honorary pallbearers were: Stewart Drake, Elmer Hyde, Stanley Hyde, Watson Livingston, Colin MacPhail, Granger MacPhail, Bill Tomilson & James Yeo. Flower bearers were: Elmer Clow, Don Darrach, Harold Donahue, Vernon Drake and Don Godfrey

Interment was in the Crosby-Hyde Cemetery, Meadowbank

Time cannot steal the treasure,

That are carried in our hearts,

Nor ever dim the memories

That a cherished life imparts.
