The Descendants of Patrick Dorsey and Elizabeth Ryan

Generation No. 1

1. PATRICK1 DORSEY was b. abt. 1800 in Co. Kilkenny, Ireland, poss. near Graiguenamanagh, and d. aft. 1861 in Charlottetown, PEI. He m. ELIZABETH RYAN May 23, 1831 at St. Johns RC Church, St. Johns, Nfld. She was b. abt. 1805 in Co. Kilkenny, Ireland, and d. bef. 1861 in Charlottetown, PEI. In some baptismal records of their children Elizabeth is listed at Elizabeth or Betty Craugh or Croak. Since the Ryan surname reappears in subsequent baptisms, Patrick Dorsey was not m. twice. Elizabeth could have been m. previously to a man named Craugh or could have had a stepfather named Craugh, or this could have been a patronymic for the very common surname Ryan. The couple and their children moved to Charlottetown, PEI abt. 1848. Patrick Dorsey was a fisherman, according to the 1861 census.

She was born abt. 1844, d. July 27, 1934 in Charlottetown, PEI, and was buried on July 29, 1934 in People�s Cemetery, Charlottetown, PEI. John Dorsey was the cofounder and owner of Dorsey, Goff and Company Boot and Shoe Manufacturer, located on Queen Street in Charlottetown, PEI.

Apr. 14, 1908 in Cambridge, MA, and was buried Apr. 16, 1908 at Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden, MA. She m. PATRICK KELLY Feb. 7, 1868 in Charlottetown, PEI, son of JOHN KELLY and MARGARET MCGLINCHY. Witnesses James Dorsey and Elizabeth Kelly. Patrick Kelly b. June 1845 in Fort Augustus, PEI, d. July 5, 1933 in Belmont, MA, and was buried on July 7, 1933 at Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden, MA. Patrick Kelly was a shoemaker, and worked for Dorsey, Goff and Company in Charlottetown. Patrick and Ellen (Dorsey) Kelly emigrated from Dorchester St., Charlottetown, PEI to Cambridge, MA in 1892.

Aug. 23, 1880, Cambridge, MA; and d. Dec. 12, 1918, Cambridge, MA. She was buried Dec. 14, 1918, Cambridge City Cemetery, Cambridge, MA. They resided on Myrtle Avenue and Meacham Road in Cambridge, MA. John Kelly was a police officer for the City of Cambridge, MA.

vi. PATRICK D. KELLY, b. Aug. 28, 1878, Charlottetown, PEI; bap. Sept. 10, 1878, St. Dunstan's Cathedral, Charlottetown, PEI. Sponsors Richard King and Mary Ellen Smith. He d. in New York City in 1926, and was buried in the grave of his brother, John William Kelly, in Cambridge City Cemetery. He was also a police officer for the City of Cambridge, MA. He m. HELEN AGNES DOODY, dau. of DANIEL DOODY and CATHERINE CASEY, in Cambridge, MA. She d. on Apr. 27, 1965. They were separated at the time of his death in 1926.

vii. JAMES ERNEST KELLY, b. Nov. 19, 1881, Charlottetown, PEI, bap. Dec. 4, 1881, St. Dunstan's Cathedral, Charlottetown, PEI. Sponsors Michael Brownard and Ellie Devlin. He m. 4. JAMES2 DORSEY (PATRICK1) was bap. Jan. 21, 1844, St. John�s RC Church, St. Johns, Nfld. Sponsors James Kavanagh and Johanna Raftis. He d. Jan. 12, 1907 in Charlottetown, PEI., and was buried in the Catholic Cemetery in Charlottetown, PEI. He m. ANNE MURPHY, dau of JEREMIAH MURPHY and HELEN POWER, on July 7, 1868 at St. Dunstan�s Cathedral, Charlottetown, PEI. Witnesses Michael Foley and Eliza Murphy. Anne Murphy was born in Nfld. in 1846 and d. on Feb. 23, 1939 in Charlottetown, PEI. James Dorsey worked with his brother, John Dorsey, at Dorsey, Goff and Company on Queen Street, and took over the operation of the business when his brother died. He resided on King Street in Charlottetown, PEI.

i. MARY ELIZABETH3 DORSEY, b. Aug. 6, 1869; bap. Aug. 14, 1869, St. Dunstan�s Cathedral, Charlottetown, PEI. Sponsors Michael Foley and Eliza Murphy. D. Dec. 26, 1950, Charlottetown, PEI. M. JAMES JOSPEH JOHNSTON, and resided in Charlottetown, PEI.

ii. JAMES KYRAN DORSEY, b. Sept. 3, 1870, bap. Sept. 8, 1870, St. Dunstan�s Cathedral, Charlottetown, PEI. Sponsors Bernard Rodden and Bridget O�Sullivan. Stud. medicine at University of New York City, and interned in ER of Bellevue Hospital, NYC. Returned to Charlottetown practice medicine in 1893, but by 1900 was living at 1408 Quincy St., Topeka, Kansas. He m. ANNA [ ] in 1894. His occupation in 1900 was solicitor. In 1910 census, he was living at 147 Johnson St., Wichita, KS with his wife, Anna C., and two sons. She was born in Michigan, her father in Canada, and her mother in Iowa. His occupation in 1910 was physician/surgeon. He d. on Dec. 24, 1916 in Wichita, Kansas.

iii. PATRICK EDMUND DORSEY, b. Mar. 17, 1872, and bap. Mar. 18, 1872, St. Dunstan�s Cathedral, Charlottetown, PEI. Sponsors Michael Murphy and Johanna Grimes. He d. May 23, 1921, Charlottetown, PEI, and was buried at the Catholic Cemetery, Charlottetown, PEI.

iv. JOHN WILLIAM DORSEY, b. Nov. 6, 1873, bap. Dec. 30, 1873, St. Dunstan's Cathedral, Charlottetown, PEI. Sponsors Patrick Kelly and Mary Alice Foley. He d. Oct. 2, 1875 in Charlottetown, PEI.

v. ANN MAY DORSEY, b. June 30, 1875, bap. July 13, 1875, St. Dunstan's Cathedral, Charlottetown, PEI. Sponsors Joseph Murphy and Helen Kelly. She d. Feb. 28, 1878 in Charlottetown, PEI.

ix. JOSEPH WILLIAM DORSEY, b. Dec. 31, 1882, bap. Jan. 8, 1883, St. Dunstan's Cathedral, Charlottetown, PEI. Sponsors Owen Winters and Margaret Ellen Murphy. Stud. medicine at McGill University in Montreal, and was in military. D. in Bombay, India Nov. 21, 1920.

x. ETHEL AGNES DORSEY, b. Mar. 14, 1885, and bap. May 14, 1885, St. Dunstan�s Cathedral, Charlottetown, PEI. Sponsors Patrick Kelly and Ellen Kelly. She d. Sept. 9, 1965, Charlottetown, PEI, and was buried on Sept. 11, 1965 in the Catholic Cemetery in Charlottetown, PEI. She m. (1) STEPHEN H. GILLIS, son of VENANTIUS GILLIS and CATHERINE MACLELLAN, and was b. 1883, Charlottetown, PEI, occupation physician, d. 1914, Charlottetown, PEI; and (2) FRANK F. SEGSWORTH, b. 1888, d. Feb. 9, 1965, Charlottetown, PEI.

xi. FRANCIS XAVIER DORSEY, b. Aug. 27, 1889 in Charlottetown, PEI. He d. Dec. 26, 1954 in Borden, PEI. He m. MARY MILDRED FARMER, dau. of PATRICK FARMER and CATHERINE GREENAN on Oct. 8, 1919. He was an engineer for the C.N. Railroad.
