The Descendants of Michael Hogan

Generation No. 1

1. MICHEAL1 HOGAN was born Abt. 1780 in Ireland, and died June 11, 1856. He married ANN. She was born Abt. 1788 in Ireland, and died June 05, 1854.

Notes for MICHEAL HOGAN:

No mention is made of Michael in family tradition, nor of the possible brothers of my ancestor Patrick Hogan, but it cannot be ignored that so many men of the right ages lived so close to each other with a surname uncommon on PEI except in the Tignish area (the only other family sometimes called Hogan, in Lots 49/50, were actually Huggans). As well, seemingly "unrelated" Hogans are buried alongside those of my own line, so I have put the family all together on the assumption that they were indeed a family, the sons of Michael Hogan, who is buried at St Andrew's, Mount Stewart. He and his sons seem to be strung out on adjacent lots from 37 to 42, in the Mount Stewart/Fort Augustus area to St Peter's and Morell.

So please bear in mind the structure of the first generation is conjectural- anyone who knows more about the subject, please correct me!

2. i. PATRICK2 HOGAN, b. 1804, County Kilkenny, Ireland; d. September 1887, Marsh Road, Morell, Lot 40, PEI.

3. ii. DENNIS HOGAN, b. Ireland.

4. iii. JAMES HOGAN, b. June 01, 1815, Ireland; d. 1902, Lot 39, PEI.

iv. JOHN HOGAN, b. Abt. 1833, British Provinces (Newfoundland?); d. Lot 40, PEI.

Generation No. 2

2. PATRICK2 HOGAN (MICHEAL1) was born 1804 in County Kilkenny, Ireland, and died September 1887 in Marsh Road, Morell, Lot 40, PEI. He married MARY CULLEN. She was born 1813 in Ireland, and died December 13, 1869 in Morell, Lot 40, PEI.

Notes for PATRICK HOGAN:The late Clement J. Hogan of Massachusetts maintained that Patrick emigrated from Tipperary (note: the related Kennys & Larkins also came from Tipperary so this could be) to Newfoundland in 1848, coming to PEI in 1851. He did not know the wife's first name. However an obit for a Patrick Hogan says he emigrated in 1832 from Kilkenny, and a baptismal record for a Catherine Hogan in 1842 (not mentioned in Clement's work) says her parents were Patrick Hogan and Mary Cullin, albeit from the St Columba, Fairfield Church records in Lot 47. An Edward Cullen also lived in Lot 47 and was born about the same time as Mary, possibly her father, and emigrated abt. 1832 as well. However there is no entry for Patrick or any others of his family in the 1842 census. Perhaps he did go to Newfoundland first and then joined his family on PEI. That would explaining the lack of baptismal records for some of his children, and also the fact that a few census records of Hogans in the area list Newfoundland as their birthplace. Also, Dennis Hogan had children baptised in St Columba, indicating a possible connection. 1861 Census: Lot 40, Roman Catholic 9, Ireland 2, PEI 7, 1864 Directory: Lot 40, Roman Catholic Farmer, 1871 Directory: Farmer, Marie, Lot 40, PEI. Burial: September 30, 1887, St Lawrence O'Toole Roman Catholic Church Cemetery, Morell Rear, Lot 40, PEI Emigration: 18321
