John: From St. Pauls Roman Catholic Baptisms, page 149, B17: A Solved Mystery

"On the 20th day of June 1888 I baptised John born this 20th day of May last of the legitimato marriage of Patrick J. McCarney and Sara McCarney, Sponsor, Mary Hughes."

As was the practice in this register, later marriages for these children were noted in writing perpendicular to the baptism entry, and his reads,"Married in Georgetown, on Oct 23 1917 to Mary Jeffrey by Rev. Croken."

This information disagrees with information passed down through the family that he was the son of Terrance McKearney, Patrick's uncle.

Here is the kicker, to heighten the confusion. Both Terrence and wife Margaret, and family, (Family 30 in the census), and Patrick and wife Sara and family (Family 190 in the census) are living in the same house (House W 1-4) in the 1891 census. John is listed in that census, and the later 1901 census as the SON OF TERRANCE and Margaret.

Now, while researching this mystery, it was noticed on page 130 of the church register, the following baptism...

"On the 24th of January 1886, I baptised Rose [scratched out, then John inserted] born on the 2nd of Jan last of the legitimato marriage of Albion Connors [then Albion scratched out, and Terrence inserted, then a careless job of changing the surname Connors to McKearney] and Catherin Connors [again subsequently scratched out, Margaret inserted, then again a careless job of changing the surname to McKearney] Sponsor Maurice Daily and Rose McCarthy" A star is marked beside the entry, perhaps marking the errors.

It appears when they later went through the register to insert the later marriages for the children, that the marriage to Mary was placed upon the wrong John McKearney. Just out of interest, another John McKearney is not listed with Patrick and Sara in any census, so their son, John must have died between 1888 and 1890 when the Catholic census was taken.
