Lot 23 Rennie Tenant List presumably for the Land Commission of 1875

Lot 23 Rennie Tenant List presumably for the Land Commission of 1875

Submitted by Michael Rennie - [email protected]

NOTES:

1) The following names may be misspellings (legibility did not seem to be the problem and in fact matched a 2nd source probably derived from this one)

From Document Similar Name More Likely in Lot 23

Asenham Oxenham
Rottenberry Rattenberry

2) My theory about the unusual lease lengths is that they signify the existence of an earlier lease with years used up. For example Norman Campbell has a 979 year lease. 999-979=20 indicating the original lease was written in 1863-20=1843. Further evidence of rewritten leases may be found in the1875 Land Commission Hearings.

3) There is a 2nd list probably derived from the first list with proposed values for the land. This list seems to be the Rennie proposal of 20 times the yearly rent (or 1 rents being a 5% return on value) and not to the amount actually paid. Two new facts emerge from this 2nd list aside from small changes in spelling

a) The land leased by Robert Rennie and occupied by Patterson is the site of a mill. Note that the Rennie's built a well known mill in Newfoundland making this PEI mill of extra interest. Gary Carroll said his mother remembers the PEI mill. The amount Robert paid his brother for the lease suggests the mill existed before 1853

b) One of the leasing parties seems to have married between the time of the two lists, i.e. Francis Peters seems to be Francis Martin in the 2nd source on one property. One additional value of the 2nd source is that it is not always clear in the original which names go with which property when more than one lease is listed against a property. The 2nd list clarifies this.
