The Descendants of Roderick MacKay of Beauly, Scotland.

Roderick arrived in Pictou, Nova Scotia aboard the Ship Hector in 1773.

" What the MAYFLOWER was to Massachusetts in 1620 the HECTOR was to Pictou County in 1773. The first Scottish emigrant ship to Nova Scotia, a trickle of less than 200 men, women and children, ultimately became the torrent that made Nova Scotia truly and forever New Scotland." Atlantic Insight

Generation No. 1

1. RODERICK2 MACKAY (ALEXANDER1) was born about 1745 in Beauly, Invernesshire, Scotland (Source: Pictonians At Home and Abroad), and died 22 Nov 1829 in Pictou, NS, CAN (Source: The Nova Scotian of December 3, 1829.). He married CHRISTIAN GRANT. She was born 1755 in Scotland, and died 30 Jan 1818 in Pictou, NS, CAN (Source: Acadian Recorder dated March 7, 1818.).

A blacksmith by trade, Roderick, his wife, and daughter Ann were among the passengers of the famed "Ship Hector" which sailed into Pictou Harbor, in September 1773. "A thick-set strongly built man of 27, Roderick, or "Rory," was the third son of the 73-year-old Alexander MacKay of Beauly. He had heard about Nova Scotia from his elder brother, Alexander, who had served there with the Fraser Highlanders between 1757 and 1763. In time all four MacKay brothers would go to Nova Scotia to settle." Scotland Farewell, The People of the Hector, Donald MacKay.

"Roderick MacKay of Beauly, Invernesshire, also settled at East River. One of

his daughters (Ann) was married to Rev. Dr. McGregor, the pioneer Presbyterian

clergyman of the County, and was the grandmother of James D. McGregor the

present Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia. Another of Roderick McKay's

daughters was the mother of the late J. D. B. Fraser, of Pictou, who,

besides being prominent in business, was a distinguished leader in the early

temperance movement. R. P. Fraser, Esq., Collector of Customs at Pictou, is

his son. Roderick McKay's son, the late Robert McKay, Esq., was long Keeper

of the Rolls of the County. His grandson, John U. Ross, K. C., is Chairman

of the Nova Scotia Public Utilities Commission."

THE EARLY SETTLERS OF THE EAST RIVER

"The East River is well known for the variety and the beauty of its scenery. On its banks are

Springville, Bridgeville, and Sunny Brae, villages of abundant peace and plenty. It is well

known for its rich deposits of iron and lime; its vales and hills, its towering elms and

winding river, but it is still more

famous for the men and women it has produced; for the district from Churchville

to Kerrowgare, a distance of about fifteen miles, has given thirty-five clergymen to the

Presbyterian Church, a Governor, a Chief Justice and a Premier to the Province.

What a community produces along educational and religious lines depends not a

little upon its antecedents. The early settlers of the East River were a sturdy

stock, a sober, stalwart worshipping set of men and women, with iron in their

blood, and a burning love in their hearts for the Church and the School. They

yoked education and religion together, and the combination produced a fine type

of men and moralities..."

RODERICK4 MACKAY (JOHN3, RODERICK2, ALEXANDER1) was born 29 Apr 1805 in Pictou, NS, CAN, and died 03 Dec 1884 in Wood Islands, PEI (Source: Herald (newspaper) dated Dec. 3, 1884: "Died, Roderick MacKay at age 72 years, 6 months. Emigrated from Pictou 45 years ago."). He married MARION (SARAH) MACDONALD Nov 1836 in Wood Islands, PEI, daughter of MAGNUS MACDONALD and FLORA MACMILLAN. She was born 1815 in Little Sands, PEI, and died 04 Jun 1880 in Wood Islands, PEI.

Roderick MacKay, the grandson of Roderick of "Hector" fame, came to Wood Islands, PEI as a young man. He rented his land from the Provincial government, as did most at the time. The original farm still belongs to the MacKay family and is the same size as it was when settled. The original homestead is standing and has been lovingly preserved by Bertha Hamilton ( great granddaughter of Roderick (1805-1884)) for future generations to see. Roderick and Sarah are believed to be buried in the Wood Island Pioneer Cemetery although no marker is now found. Their son Magnus MacKay (died age 20) is buried there as is their grandson John Magnus MacKay (died at about 2 months) and their daughter-in-law Isabella Smith MacKay (age 26).

Notes for MARION (SARAH) MACDONALD:

"Marion vs Sarah"

"Marion" is the way ministers, census-takers, and others formally 'anglicizes the Gaelic name "Mor", which in everyday pariance was called Sarah and eventually this is the English form which won out. When you see the name Marion in an official record, read Sarah.

Marion is the name recorded in Belfast Church for Sarah MacDonald.
