Descendants of Benjamin(e) George MacKenzie & Isabella MacLeod

Generation No. 1

1. Benjamin(e) George2 MacKenzie (Unknown1) was born Abt. 1795 in probably Princetown, PEI, and died 1872 in Blue Mounds, Dane Co, Wisconsin. He married Isabella MacLeod February 08, 1816 in PEI, daughter of John MacLeod and Mary MacPherson. She was born May 01, 1793 in Durness, Sutherlandshire, Scotland, and died March 26, 1876 in Adamsville, Iowa Co, Wisconsin.

Notes for Benjamin(e) George MacKenzie:

Benjamin(e) & Isabella and all their family, with the exception of son George & his family, settled in Wisconsin in July, 1849.

Benjamin(e) was involved in shipbuilding industry prior to leaving PEI. See notes under son George MacKenzie for further details.

Fence Viewers and Constable List, P.E.I. - 1821 https://www.islandregister.com/1821a.html

From the Prince Edward Island Royal Gazette, 1821

Benjamin(e) is a Constable in New London.

Land Patent Records for Wisconsin

Benjamin(e) M(a)cKenzie received 40 acres of land in Iowa County 06/01/1858.

1870 Census Town of Blue Mounds, Dane Co, Wisconsin

Benjamin(e) is now a retired farmer, age 75, born in PEI and is a US citizen. Isabelle is keeping house, age 76, born in Scotland, cannot write (presumably cannot read? although not checked).

Benjamin(e) died in the fall of 1872 (see article under William A MacKenzie)

Parents and siblings are unknown at this time. Based on the information contained in the 1798 PEI Census and the naming patterns used for the children, there is one family (John McKenzie) from the residents of Princetown with parents of an appropriate age which is a possibility.

This needs further investigation.

April 5/2004 - INTERESTING NOTE FROM PETER CHAPMAN:

Peter Chapman has provided an interesting MacKenzie line on his website at

http://www.ancestors-genealogy.com/chapy/mackenzie.htm

There may be some connection to our Benjamin(e), but we are unable to confirm anything at this time. We know there were a number of MacKenzie families in Princetown/Malpeque area in the 1798 census and Peter's William MacKenzie line may belong to any one of these families as could our Benjamin(e).

The Descendants of Thomas Hyde on the Island Register does record Isabella, born in 1788, marrying a William MacKenzie on Oct 10, 1824. Location is not mentioned and only 2 children have been noted - Kenneth Alexander (Nov 19, 1824) and Hanna Bella (Jul 10, 1829) with no birth locations. It also indicates this was a second marriage for Isabella. She had previously been married to a Thomas Dunn on Jul 12, 1810. There is no mention of any children by Thomas Dunn.

Another interesting piece of the puzzle.

More About Benjamin(e) George MacKenzie:

Burial: Blue Mounds, Dane Co, Wisconsin

Occupation: Farmer/Shipbuilder

Notes for Isabella MacLeod:

PEI Archives - Newspaper report from 'The Examiner' dated May 1, 1876, pg 2 -

Died - 'Adamsville, Wisconsin on 26 March, formerly of New London, PEI at age 81 yrs & 9 mths.'

This would appear to indicate a date of birth approximately June, 1794.

This conflicts with Durness Parish Christening record. Date has been verified by Beverley Berney who viewed the microfilm of the Parish Register for Durness, Sutherlandshire about 1990.

Generation No. 2

2. George3 MacKenzie (Benjamin(e) George2, Unknown1) was born January 01, 1817 in New London, PEI, and died January 19, 1898 in New London, PEI. He married Hannah MacKay. She was born Bet. 1817 - 1822 in Sutherlandshire, Scotland, and died November 23, 1894 in New London, PEI.

Notes for George MacKenzie:

Geddie Memorial Cemetery - Stone #312

Monumental inscription - indicates George died at age 84 years. This would give a date of birth approximately 1814.

1861 Census Lot 21, PEI (pg 19)

George is the head of a household of 12 people. The household consisted of 2 married people (presumably George and Hannah) and ten single persons, all of whom were Presbyterian. There were 3 males under 5, 2 females age 5 to 16 and 2 males 5 to 16, 2 males age 16 to 21 and 1 male and 1 female age 21 to 45 (presumably George and Hannah) and an elderly female 60 + years old. Two members of the household were born in Scotland, one is known to be Hannah and the other is presumably the elderly female, which is presumed to be Hannah's mother.

George had 50 acres of land , which had been leased from the Cunard estate (old lease 67) and 34 years of the lease had expired. In this case, the original lease would have been granted in 1827. George would have only been about 10 years old at the time. The original lease was probably granted to his father, Benjamin(e) and it is presumed that George assumed the lease when Benjamin(e) emigrated to Wisconsin in 1849. The original lease appears to be missing. It could not be located.

The agricultural part of the census noted that of the 50 acres, 20 acres were arable and the farm had produced 20 bushels of wheat, 40 bushels of barley, 120 bushels of oats, 15 bushels of buckwheat, 200 bushels of potatoes ands 200 bushels of turnips. They had also produced 40 yards of cloth (half fulled) and 100 pounds of butter. They has 2 horses, 3 cattle, 15 sheep and 2 hogs. The household also had one boat for fishing and had produced 10 barrels of mackerel, 5 barrels of herring and 20 quintals of cod.

1881 Census Lot 21, PEI

George (63), date of birth c1818, is residing with Hannah (59) and their children Jane A (28), Arthur (23), Donald (21). Also residing with the family is Charlotte Shean (20) and Letitia Mills (13). All the family are of Scottish descent, Presbyterian and born in PEI, with the exception of Hannah who was born in Scotland. The older female from 1861 census is no longer present.

Shipbuilding History

Besides farming, George was involved in the building of a number of ships in partnership with his father, Benjamin(e) and others. Some of these ships were:

Hannah G - 46 tons - built in 1874 for George R Garrett, New London

Louisa Montgomery - 27 tons - built in 1864 for Hugh McMillan, West River

Minnie R MacKenzie - 56 tons - built in 1866 for R T Holman, Summerside

Armada - 24 tons - registered 1839 (George MacKenzie 22 shares, Benjamin(e) MacKenzie 21shares & George MacLeod 21 shares (source PEI Archives Ship Registry)

Liberator - 53 tons - registered 1852 (George MacKenzie 21 shares & John Cousins 43 shares)

Odessa - 62 tons - registered 1856 (George MacKenzie 32 shares & George MacLeod 32 shares)

Colonial Herald 4 November 1843:

'Launched, a few days since, from the shipyard of Messrs. Benjamin(e) and George McKenzie, New London, a very fine schooner called the Francis, of 94 tons, built for the Hon. P S MacNutt, Darnley'

The Examiner, April 11, 1864:

'Launched Thursday last, April 7, a schooner, 55 tons, Louisa Montgomery, built by Mr. George McKenzie, naval architect, for Hon. Donald Montgomery, for coastal and fishing trade.

French River and Park Corner History:

Notes for Hannah MacKay:

Popular belief is that Hannah's name was Calder. Family tree document completed by Georgie MacKenzie MacRae indicates name is 'Hanna Caulder' and date of birth is 1817 (probably calculated from monument inscription). It is stated that she is Granddaughter of William Caulder and the niece of Ann Caulder MacKay. We have been unable to verify the connection. No birth or christening record has been located in Sutherlandshire under either surname in the 1817 - 1822 time period. If she is related to the Calders, she is more than likely from the Parish of Durness also.

Note spelling - Calder/Caulder

Baptism cards for sons George Jr. and Benjamin Colin indicate their mother's name is Hannah 'McKay'.

Original parish register in Geddie Memorial Church (as seen by Beverley Berney) listed surname as MacKay. This surname was subsequently crossed out and replaced with Calder (origin/time of adjustment unknown). Original register book is no longer in Geddie Memorial Church - whereabouts now unknown.

Research on Sutherlandshire web site leads one to believe that MacKay/Calder were interchangeable surnames and possibly several families used Calder as a pseudonym and many may not have even been related.

Geddie Memorial Cemetery - Stone #312

Monumental inscription indicates Hannah (no surname) died at age 77 years. This would make birth date about 1817. The 1881 Census would put date of birth c1822.

There were very few families named Calder in this area of PEI, but plenty of MacKays.

Hannah remains very much an unsolved mystery!

Mary is age 51, keeping house and born in PEI. Daughter Christy Ann (28) is a schoolteacher, born in PEI and sons George (13) and Chester A (10) are also living with them (both born in Wisconsin).

Donald (John) was a miner in Ridgeway, Iowa Co. Wisconsin from 1850-1860 and in Blue Mounds, Dane Co. Wisconson from 1870-1880.

Notes for Alexander Campbell:

Alexander & family probably emigrated to the U.S. about 1849 (same time as Benjamin(e) & Isabella and the rest of the MacKenzie family) since information in Fred Diamond's lineage file (PEI web site) found family in 1850 census for Ridgeway, Iowa Co, Wisconsin.

Resided in Madison, Wisconsin for a number of years, and while there Alexander was chosen a member of the legislature. Moved to Ridgefield, Iowa and was one of the prominent lawyers of the state and also a district judge for a period of eighteen years.

Notes for Alexander MacKenzie:

According to family history, Alexander & Katherine had 5 children. Only 4 have been identified through the US census records.

There has been some question as to whether Alexander's wife was Catherine MacLure or Katherine Ward. Theresa Newbury has a family chart, which indicates Alexander's wife is Katherine Ward and I have a chart indicating her name is Catherine MacLure.

According to Theresa's family information, 4 of Benjamin(e) & Isabella's children married into the Ward family. I am assuming Theresa's information is correct and that Katherine was a Ward & not a MacLure.

1880 US Census - Moscow, Iowa Co, Wisconsin

Alexander (51) is shown married to Kate (born in Nova Scotia) with 4 children living at home ages 19, 15, 12 & 9. In the household there is also an Etta Ward residing with them.
