The Descendants of John MacLeod & Kenneth MacLeod Of French River/New London, PEI

Generation No. 1

The following background information is considered important to the story and has been included to help clarify some of the background information.

The story as it has been told to date:

French River and Park Corner History 1773 - 1973

This book states three MacLeod families (John, Kenneth & George) came to New London, PEI in the early 1800's. They all came from the Parish of Durness, Sutherlandshire, Scotland. It is stated that Kenneth and George came in 1808 and John came in 1809. John MacLeod and his family are noted as having emigrated in 1805 on the brig 'Polly'. They landed in St. Peters, PEI and then moved to New London in 1809. His farm became known as the 'Cove Farm' (picture of the MacLeod home is on page 69) and his descendents became known as the 'Cove MacLeods'. Kenneth MacLeod and George MacLeod came in 1808. George had emigrated to Miramichi in 1806 before coming to PEI. The story goes on to say that Kenneth MacLeod and John MacLeod were granted deeds to adjoining farms in 1815.

From theTop of the Hill - The History of an Island Community - Irishtown - Burlington, page 193/94:

A George MacLeod is a resident of Irishtown (exact date unknown). It is indicated he emigrated to New Brunswick in 1806 and then to PEI in 1808, settling in Irishtown. This story is similar to the story contained in the 'French River and Park Corner History 1773 - 1973'. It goes on to state that George MacLeod's son George married Sophia MacKay (daughter of Ann Calder and John MacKay). Their family is covered extensively in this book.

The story as it is known to date:

From Arlene Gillian (based on information from The MacLeods of Prince Edward Island, by Harold S. MacLeod..pages 7-12] regarding Kenneth MacLeod:

'Kenneth was born in Sutherlandshire, Scotland and married Nancy in Scotland. They left with their children from Thurso, North Britain on the ship Elizabeth and Ann of Newcastle, bound for PEI. They arrived on PEI on Nov. 8,1806. They settled in New London in 1808 and had a farm of 58 acres.'

Elizabeth and Ann of Newcastle - passenger list

We know from the passenger list for the ship 'Elizabeth and Ann' that sailed from Thurso, N. Britain (Scotland) on November 8, 1806, that 4 MacLeod families were on board including both John and Kenneth and their families. Two other MacLeod families, namely that of Hugh (age 36), and his wife Marion McKay (age 30) along with children Hughina (10), Margaret (2) and Catherine (1) and the family of a John McLeod (age 59), Ann McKenzie (age 50) and sons Donald (25), Hugh (15), Angus (6) and daughters Barbara (18), Wilelmina (9) and a daughter 'Urie' (spelling ?) (14) were also among the passengers.

Hugh MacLeod and his family also settled in the New London area. A second Hugh MacLeod (c1771-Jul 25, 1845) is buried in Yankee Hill Pioneer Cemetery. Based on the tombstone inscription, this burial appears to be for the Hugh MacLeod who arrived with John and Kenneth. His relationship to John and Kenneth has not been determined. He is of a similar age and it is interesting to note that both Hugh and John have been mentioned as being of 'Island Hall' in Durness. The eventual whereabouts of the John MacLeod family or the connection, if any, to the above three MacLeod families has not yet been established.

The passenger information from the Elizabeth and Ann would appear to contradict earlier documentation that John MacLeod's family arrived on the 'Polly' from Glasgow earlier in 1805.

No George MacLeod nor his family have been located fitting the above story. It would appear by all accounts that the 'George' MacLeod referred to in the French River History is probably the Hugh MacLeod who was also on board the 'Elizabeth and Ann'. The George MacLeod married to Sophia MacKay (as mentioned in the Irishtown History) has been determined to be the son of Kenneth MacLeod (not the son of a George as stated).

Hugh MacLeod and Marian MacKay's family have been documented separately. All the MacLeod's have been difficult to sort out due to the similarities in names and ages.

Children of Unknown MacLeod are:

+ 2 i. Kenneth2 MacLeod, Sr, born Abt. 1759 in Durness, Sutherlandshire, Scotland; died July 15, 1841 in French River, PEI.

+ 3 ii. John MacLeod, Sr, born Abt. 1761 in Durness, Sutherlandshire, Scotland; died June 21, 1836 in French River, PEI.

Generation No. 2

2. Kenneth2 MacLeod, Sr (Unknown1) was born Abt. 1759 in Durness, Sutherlandshire, Scotland, and died July 15, 1841 in French River, PEI. He married Ann Morrison February 19, 1793 in Durness, Sutherlandshire, Scotland. She was born Abt. 1776 in Durness, Sutherlandshire, Scotland, and died June 29, 1841 in French River, PEI.

Notes for Kenneth MacLeod, Sr:

Cemetery transcript for Yankee Hill Pioneer Cemetery - Stone #5

'In memory of Kenneth MacLeod who departed this life July 15, 1841, aged 82. b) Also his wife, Ann Morrison, who departed this life June 29 1841, aged 61 who emigrated to America in 1806 from the Parish of Durniss, Scotland'

There is a discrepancy between the dates of birth for Kenneth and Ann calculated from the 'Elizabeth and Ann' passenger list and the cemetery transcript. I don't believe there was a 21 year age difference as the cemetery transcript would suggest. Based on the cemetery transcript, Kenneth was born c1759 and from the passenger list he would be born c1769. Ann was born c1780 based on cemetery transcript and c1776 based on passenger list. No birth or christening record could be located in Durness Parish registers for either Kenneth or Ann.

Based on the date of their marriage (1793), either date could be correct for Kenneth, but both dates for Ann would appear to be incorrect as she would only be between 13 and 17 when she married.

Kenneth leased land adjacent to his brother John. The relationship between Kenneth and John has been verified through John MacLeod's will.

In Kenneth's will, he names supposedly all his children (8 sons and 2 daughters). He wrote his will just days after his wife Ann (Nancy) Morrison died on June 29, 1841.

November 04, 1766 in Durness, Sutherlandshire, Scotland, and died Aft. July 1836 in PEI.

Notes for John MacLeod, Sr:

Note: There is a discrepancy between the dates of birth for John calculated from the passenger list

(1771) and that calculated from his tombstone (1761) at Yankee Hill Pioneer Cemetery.

Given the date of John's marriage, 1761 is assumed to be the closer date. No birth record could be located in LDS Durness Parish registers.

Generation No. 3

4. John3 MacLeod (Kenneth2, Unknown1) was born Bef. February 14, 1794 in Durness, Sutherlandshire, Scotland, and died December 27, 1872 in PEI. He married Catherine MacKay. She was born Abt. 1800 in Scotland, and died April 09, 1879 in PEI.

Notes for John MacLeod:

From L. Ann Coles:

John was twelve years of age when the family emigrated from Durness, Sutherlandshire, Scotland and took up land at New London Capes. John obtained a lease for 100 acres on the north bank of the South West River just to the east of the present New London Bridge. It is possible that he or some of his family operated a ferry for travellers wishing to cross the river. In religion John was a Presbyterian. When he died John left his property to his son Kenneth.

There is an entry in the LDS (see familysearch.org) for this John MacLeod (son of Kenneth MacLeod and Ann Morrison) with a spouse of Sarah Curry. It is from an Official temple record for deceased individuals, 1991-1996. The same information was submitted in an Ancestral File (submitted by Ross G Williams from Regina, Saskatchewan) and a Pedigree File (same author).

It appears this LDS information is incorrect.

July 2004 - PEI Archives - Baptisms (re Sarah Curry connection)

Two baptisms were located recorded at St Paul's Anglican Church, Charlottetown, PEI

1) Jane McLeod

Born 20 April - Baptized 27 July 1820 by T DesBrisay - Book 3, pge 189

2) James McLeod

Born 24 May 1822 - Baptized 3 July 1822 by T DesBrisay - Book 3, pge 204

In both instances, the parents are shown as JAMES MCLEOD and SARAH CURRY.

Based on the baptism information, it appears that the LDS files may be referring to James (son of Kenneth and Ann), instead of this John MacLeod?

The LDS information is also incorrect as to place of birth, as all the records show John's place of birth as Isle of Skye.

John MacLeod is buried in New London Protestant Cemetery with his wife Catherine MacKay. A Sarah Curry has not been located.

Notes for Marion MacLeod:

Baptism record shows name as Maryann. Passenger list of the Elizabeth and Ann (1806), she is listed as Marrion McLeod.

Margate Church Records believed by L. Ann Coles to have been created by Rev. Dr. John Keir have a Margaret, but no Marrion/Maryann - assume this is an error and that Margaret is actually Marion.

Andrew MacPherson settled in Irishtown about 1840 and had 3 daughters, Mary Jane, Ann and Sophie, in addition to Margaret.

Notes for George MacLeod:

A tombstone discovered partly covered by tree roots in Yankee Hill Pioneer Cemetery reads:

'In Memory of George McLeod died Jan. 26, 1878 AE 76 yrs. 11 mos. A native of Sutherlandshire Scotland emigrated to this island in 1806'

This is no doubt Kenneth MacLeod's son George as date of birth matches.

I believe this is the George MacLeod referred to in the books French River and Park Corner History and From The Top of The Hill.

George and Sophia's family is extensively covered in the From The Top of The Hill book.

Notes for Catherine Elizabeth MacLeod:

French River and Park Corner History

Catherine is shown as a child of Andrew MacLeod and Catherine(MacIntyre) MacLeod. It indicates she died young. We do know that some of the children listed in the MacLeod history are more than likely Kenneth & Catherine's children instead of Andrew & Catherine's. See notes under Andrew.

Geddie Memorial Cemetery transcript - Stone #338

'Catherine Elizabeth, dau. of Kenneth & Catherine MacLeod, b. 1853; d. Nov 5 1905'. She is interred beside Kenneth MacLeod and his wife Catherine.

Based on her date of birth and the tombstone inscription, it would appear from this that the Catherine mentioned in French River history is Kenneth's daughter and not Andrew's.

Fence Viewers and Constable List, P.E.I. 1833 - at https://www.islandregister.com/1833a.html

(From the Prince Edward Island Royal Gazette, March 12, 1833, Page 4)

Murdock McLeod of Cove is listed as a Constable in Lot 20.

From Arlene Gillian's file -

Murdock was working for Yeo's Shipbuilding in Lot 11 when he met Ann Hardy of Lot 12.

MacLeod History [pg.11 - Murdock and Ann lived in the Belmont area, but moved to Park Corner some time prior to 1860. They leased the land from a Mr. Holland of Charlottetown. The deed showed the land was bought in1860.

French River and Park Corner History [pg. 69/71) - prior to1863 Murdock MacLeod came to Park Corner where he leased and in 1870 purchased a farm from Henry Cundall. While the exact date of Murdoch MacLeod's arrival at Park Corner is not certain, it was prior to 1863, he came to Park Corner from the Western part of the Island.

It is probable that this is the same Murdock, son of Kenneth MacLeod. There does not appear to be any other Murdock MacLeod in the area born in the same time period.

Notes for William MacLeod:

From Arlene Gilllian

William lived in California. [Addie MacLeod Gillian]

The following story was told to me by Glenwood Macleod of Park Corner in Aug. 1980...

'William, James and John MacLeod were in business together and they were threatened with bankruptcy, which was a crime back then that nessitated a jail sentence. John got clear of the charge before this happened and the others skipped out of the country, James to the Southern States and William went to the Klondike'

56 vi. John MacLeod, born 1856; died March 05, 1911 in Park Corner, PEI.

Notes for John MacLeod:

Unmarried.

+ 57 vii. Andrew MacLeod, born 1859; died March 02, 1905.

58 viii. James MacLeod, born Unknown; died Unknown.

Notes for James MacLeod:

Moved to United States.

59 ix. Mattie MacLeod, born Unknown; died Unknown in Boston, Suffolk Co, Massachusetts.

15. Isabella3 MacLeod (John2, Unknown1) was born May 01, 1793 in Durness, Sutherlandshire, Scotland, and died March 26, 1876 in Adamsville, Iowa Co, Wisconsin. She married Benjamin(e) George MacKenzie February 08, 1816 in PEI, son of Unknown MacKenzie. He was born Abt. 1795 in probably Princetown, PEI, and died in the fall of 1872 in Blue Mounds, Dane Co, Wisconsin.

Notes for Isabella MacLeod:

PEI Archives - Newspaper report from 'The Examiner' dated May 1, 1876, pg 2 -

Died - 'Adamsville, Wisconsin on 26 March, formerly of New London, PEI at age 81 yrs & 9 mths.'

This would appear to indicate a date of birth approximately June, 1794.

This conflicts with Durness Parish Christening record. Date has been verified by Beverley Berney who viewed the microfilm of the Parish Register for Durness, Sutherlandshire about 1990.

More About Isabella MacLeod:

Baptism: June 12, 1793, Durness, Sutherlandshire, Scotland

Burial: Blue Mounds, Dane Co, Wisconsin

Comment: Christening recorded name as Isobel

Notes for Benjamin(e) George MacKenzie:

Benjamin(e) was involved in shipbuilding industry prior to leaving PEI. See notes under son George MacKenzie for further details. He is also listed as a Constable (From the PEI Royal Gazette 1821) in New London.

Benjamin(e) & Isabella and all of their family, with the exception of George & his family, settled in Wisconsin in July, 1849.

Land Patent Records for Wisconsin show Benjamin M(a)cKenzie receiving 40 acres of land in Iowa County 06/01/1858.

1870 Census Town of Blue Mounds, Dane Co, Wisconsin

Benjamin(e) & Isabella are located in the Town of Blue Mounds in the 1870 US Census. Benjamin(e) is now a retired farmer, age 75, born in PEI and is a US citizen. Isabelle is keeping house, age 76, born in Scotland, cannot write (presumably cannot read? although not checked).

Benjamin(e) died in the fall of 1872 (see article under son William A MacKenzie).

Parents and siblings are unknown at this time. Based on the information contained in the 1798 PEI Census and the naming patterns used for the children, there is one family from the residents of Princetown with parents of an appropriate age which is a possibility. This needs further investigation.

April 5/2004 - INTERESTING NOTE FROM PETER CHAPMAN:

Peter Chapman has provided an interesting MacKenzie line on his website at: http://www.ancestors-genealogy.com/chapy/mackenzie.htm

There may be some connection to our Benjamin(e), but we are unable to confirm anything at this time. We know there were a number of MacKenzie families in Princetown/Malpeque area in the 1798 census and Peter's William MacKenzie line may belong to any one of these families as could our Benjamin(e).

The Descendants of Thomas Hyde on the Island Register does record Isabella, born in 1788, marrying a William MacKenzie on Oct 10, 1824. Location is not mentioned and only 2 children have been noted - Kenneth Alexander (Nov 19, 1824) and Hanna Bella (Jul 10, 1829) with no birth locations. It also indicates this was a second marriage for Isabella. She had previously been married to a Thomas Dunn on Jul 12, 1810. There is no mention of any children by Thomas Dunn.

Another interesting piece of the puzzle.

More About Benjamin(e) George MacKenzie:

Notes for Christy Ann MacKenzie:

Died young - had a family of 3 in Black Earth, Wisconsin. Husband's name unknown.

16. Col. Hugh3 MacLeod (John2, Unknown1) was born August 01, 1795 in Durness, Sutherlandshire, Scotland, and died March 13, 1866 in French River, PEI. He married Nancy Burke. She was born Abt. 1793 in PEI?, and died Bef. January 21, 1866 in probably French River, PEI.

Notes for Col. Hugh MacLeod:

According to 'French River and Park Corner History', Col Hugh MacLeod married a Nancy Burke. (Old notes in Geddie Memorial do not have this). No birth/marriage/death record of a Nancy Burke has been located yet. Hugh's wife must have predeceased him, as she is not mentioned or provided for in his will dated 21 January 1866 (see transcript below).

Hugh was possibly a Colonel in the British military (hence the title) and he may have been stationed in Halifax. Col. Hugh MacLeod owned the farm later owned by George Howatt.

Hugh mentions grandsons, James Wellington MacLeod, Neil MacLeod and John Grant in his will. We have located possible connections for James and John, but none for Neil at this time.

More About Col. Hugh MacLeod:

Baptism: August 12, 1795, Durness, Sutherlandshire, Scotland

Burial: Yankee Hill Pioneer Cemetery, French River, PEI

Notes for Nancy Burke:

Hector MacLeod's notes also mention that Hugh's wife is Nancy Burke - source of information is unknown.

It was popularly believed that the tombstone at Yankee Hill inscribed with 'Nancy Wife of Hugh McLeod died May 15 1867 Aet. 76' is that of this Nancy Burke.

I do not think this is the case. I believe that the Yankee Hill stone is for the wife of Hugh MacLeod the Elder (Died July 25 1845 aged 74) for the following reasons:

  1. The tombstone is physically situated beside that of Hugh MacLeod, the Elder.
  2. We know that Hugh the elder's wife, as mentioned in his will was named Nancy.
  3. If it is true, that Col. Hughs wife was deceased prior to Jan 21, 1866, as his will would have us believe, then this stone count not be for this Nancy Burke.

19. Andrew3 MacLeod (John2, Unknown1) was born Bef. May 10, 1804 in Durness, Sutherlandshire, Scotland, and died Bet. September 28 - October 18, 1838 in PEI. He married Catherine MacIntyre Bet. 1830 - 1831 in PEI. She was born September 11, 1811 in Scotland, and died March 13, 1902 in PEI.

Notes for Andrew MacLeod:

There is some apparent confusion as to the children of Andrew and Catherine.

French River Park Corner History

The information is this book states that Andrew MacLeod and Catherine McIntyre had one daughter, Catherine, who died at a young age, and five sons: Lemuel and Kenneth who went to the USA, Capt. George MacLeod (1843-1905) who married Alice Cornish, and Capt. John (Johnny Garland) MacLeod who married Sophia Sims and was lost at sea during the Aug 24 1873 gale. No detail given on the fifth son.

Will of Andrew MacLeod (Will of 28 Sep 1838 - PEI Archives Wills Liber 4 Folio 6)

According to Andrews will, he only had 3 children, sons John, Donald and Hugh. He bequeathed to them his 1/2 or share of land that had been bequeathed to him by his father in his last will and testament dated 11 April 1831 (see will of John MacLeod Sr). His wife Catherine was to receive the stock, implements, moveable effects and income of aforementioned land for her support and the support of John, Donald and Hugh. After John, Donald and Hugh became capable of supporting themselves, they were to support and maintain Catherine providing she remained unmarried. Andrew also provided for his share of the continued support of his mother in accordance with his father's will. Interestingly, by the time the will was proved 18 Oct 1838, the widowed Catherine had already married Kenneth MacLeod who, according to Geddie Memorial notes and L. Ann Coles, was the son of Kenneth MacLeod, Sr and therefore Andrew's first cousin.

Andrew died at approximately 34 years of age (unknown cause). His children would have still been very young at the time of his death and would normally have been provided for in the will. Why were supposed sons Kenneth and Lemuel not mentioned in will? Perhaps they were sons of Kenneth and Catherine?

Capt. George MacLeod is obviously not the son of Andrew and Catherine as he was born 5 years after Andrew's death. He is assumed to a son of Kenneth and Catherine.

(LDS IGI file also contains an entry for George MacLeod born abt. 1843, parents Kenneth and Catherine)

The children have been shown associated with the appropriate father as best as can be determined at this time.

Notes for Jane MacLeod:

The 'Elizabeth and Ann' did not depart from Thurso, N Britian until November 8, 1806. This leaves date of birth suspect as being born at sea on August 30, 1806 (as noted in Church Records of the Margate Circuit).

LDS IGI file and an LDS Pedigree file both have a date of birth of November 8, 1806.

Jennie was probably christened in Charlottetown shortly after ship landed. This information seems reasonable.

Dolly was born at Clifton, New London on the farm immediately east of the present cemetery. In error her parents names were once given to me by Bert MacKay as Alexander and Christy. This was confirmed by a quit claim deed which settled her father's estate. The name of her mother is unknown.'

In 1859 gold was discovered near Central City, Colorado. Overnight the tiny town became a boom town as prospectors poured in to make their fortune. Among those who went to Central City was George and his cousins Neil and John McKay. George was not one of those who made a fortune. Instead he became a teamster in a mine. Unmarried, he died in Black Hawk and was buried from a funeral parlour in Central City. The information for his death certificate, some of which is incomplete or in total error, was provided by his cousin Neil McKay. George always used the spelling 'Mc' rather than 'Mac' for his surname.

Notes for Capt. George MacLeod:

From L. Ann Coles:

On 2 January 1907, The Queen's County Guardian carried the following obituary to Capt. George McLeod.

'In the death of Capt. George McLeod on 16th December, ult., Buffalo, New York lost one of its best liked marine-insurance men, one whose wide experience and ability in his line of work made him very valuable to the interests for which he labored and whose uniform courtesy and kindliness endeared him to all who came into contact with him. Although he had been ailing for some time, his death was quite unexpected by his large circle of friends and acquaintances. For about a year and a half he had not been able to perform the duties of his position of marine wrecking master of the office of Smith, Davis & Co., and for about four weeks he had been confined to his home. Locomotor ataxia was the chief ailment. Capt. McLeod was born on May 1st 1836 at New London, PEI. He went to sea when fourteen years old and sailed to all parts of the world before he came to the Great Lakes in the spring of 1856. Surviving Capt. McLeod are his wife and a son and daughter. The son, Dr. E. J. McLeod and the daughter is the wife of Thomas J. O'Brien of the Chamber of Commerce. Miss Ellen Kennedy, daughter of Capt. McLeod's first wife, always lived with him as a member of his family'.

For a detailed account of Capt George MacLeod's career, see www.linkstothepast.com for Ship Captain Biographies taken from the book History of the Great Lakes, Vol. 2 by J.B. Mansfield, Published Chicago: J.H. Beers & Co. 1899.

29. Margaret Helen4 MacLeod (John3, Kenneth2, Unknown1) was born Bet. 1838 - 1842 in PEI, and died January 16, 1912 in Alberton, PEI. She married Capt. George R MacLeod. He was born Abt. 1846 in Nova Scotia, and died Aft. 1881 in possibly Gloucester, Essex Co, Massachusetts.

Notes for Margaret Helen MacLeod:

This family is very confusing!

From L. Ann Coles:

Margaret and George lived near the property later owned by Robert Morrison, in a little house down by the creek which flows into New London Harbour.

From Arlene Gillian in 2001(in turn from information received from Edith Eldershaw:

Margaret married in the USA and lived in Buffalo, NY. Son William was about 3 or 4 years old at the time of his father George's drowning and he supposedly was born in 1871 (making George's drowning about 1873/75). Information from Arlene also indicates that after George's death, William, Wesley and Margaret moved to ALBERTA.

I believe the above reference to Alberta should be Alberton, PEI, as William was married in Alberton, PEI in 1917.

So many questions - few answers so far.

New London Protestant Cemetery transcript - Stone #337

Indicates Margaret died at age 74.

(I believe this is the correct Margaret MacLeod)

Notes for Capt. George R MacLeod:

From L. Ann Coles:

George was a seaman and was drowned off the coast of Gloucester, Essex Co, Massachusetts. His parentage is unknown although he is thought to have belonged to one of the New London MacLeod families.

The following census record was located which I believe may be for this family.

1881 Lot 21, Queens Co, PEI

George R McLeod (35, born c1846), mariner, born in Nova Scotia, wife Margaret McLeod (39, born c1842), born in PEI and their son William (8, born c1873), born in PEI.

There is no mention of Wesley. Presumably, he was born after the 1881 census.

Children of Margaret MacLeod and George MacLeod are:

George (38) a farmer is shown with his children Herbert (15), John A (13), Ada M (5), Everett (3) and Beatrice (1) residing with his parents Kenneth (78), Catherine (69) and his sister Catherine (28) in the 1881 Census. Alice has not been shown.

A search of the census records has located Alice McLeod (36) who is married and has been enumerated at the residence of Benjamin Pillman in Lot 21.

The surname has been misspelled as 'Lerd'. Alice was probably visiting there at the time the census was taken. There is also another female McLeod (Lerd) at the same place with a first name of ?Emmietta/Emmerette. She is age 20 (born c1861). This appears to be Emeretta MacLeod (daughter of George MacLeod and Barbara Cole).

St Stephen's Anglican Cemetery transcript - Stone #16

'Mary M Pidgeon McLeod' is buried with her parents.

More About Mary Margaret Pidgeon:

Burial: St Thomas Anglican Cemetery, Springbrook, PEI

Notes for Donald MacLeod:

Until proven otherwise, we are assuming that this Donald MacLeod is Hugh MacLeod and Nancy Burke's son. Hugh MacLeod does not mention of a son Donald in his will, however, he did mention a grandson James Wellington MacLeod. Donald may therefore have been deceased by this date. No burial record has been located yet.

An LDS Ancestral file (submitted by Ralph Maahs from Michigan) has a James Wellington MacLeod born to Donald MacLeod and Mary Margaret Pidgeon in New London 20 July 1856. This is an unusual middle name so it is assumed this is the right family, although, this same file also has Donald MacLeod married a second time to Mary Palmer on 26 Feb 1863.

This second marriage does not appear to be possible as:

  1. Donald's wife Mary Margaret outlived him (she died in 1913).
  2. Notes in Geddie Memorial indicate Mary Palmer married Capt. Daniel MacLeod and lived in Cleveland, Ohio (biography of Daniel MacLeod also states this).

The LDS file also indicates Donald is the son of Donald MacLeod and Lydia Adams. This would also appear to be incorrect.

Date of birth is approximate based on date of birth for Margaret and their first known child.

Children of Mary Pidgeon and Donald MacLeod are:

176 i. James Wellington5 MacLeod, born July 20, 1856 in New London, PEI; died Aft. 1881.

Notes for Mary MacLeod:

Hugh MacLeod did not mention a daughter Mary in his will in 1866. He did however mention a grandson John Grant. It is possible Mary may have been deceased at time will was written. Her date of birth is estimated from date of birth of son John.

Reference: St. John's Belfast Church Baptism Records - pge 95

Male - Grant John McLeod - Born 14-Jun-1835, Baptized - 04-Aug-1836, Father - John Grant, Mother - Mary McLeod, Residence - New London.

John MacLeod, Sr also mentioned a granddaughter Mary in his will dated 11 April 1831 ..'excepting two Cows, two Calves and Six Sheep which I leave and bequeath to my Grand child Mary McLeod.'

This is more than likely the Mary that John was referring to, as his son Donald's daughter Mary was not born until 1830. It does not seem logical that he would leave a one year old granddaughter cows and sheep.

Notes for John Grant:

Family not located in 1881 Canadian Census.

Child of Mary MacLeod and John Grant is:

277 i. John MacLeod5 Grant, born June 14, 1835 in New London, PEI; died Bef. 1881.

Notes for John MacLeod Grant:

A grandson named John Grant is noted in Hugh MacLeod's will of January 21, 1866.

Do not know for certain, if this is the right child - see notes for mother Mary MacLeod. A John Grant was not located in the 1881 Canadian Census.

70. Margaret Jane4 MacLeod (Hugh3, John2, Unknown1) was born Abt. 1820 in PEI, and died Aft. January 21, 1866. She married (1) Capt. Joseph Palmer February 12, 1839 in New London, PEI. He was born Abt. 1818 in Nova Scotia or England?, and died Bef. August 16, 1860. She married (2) John McMillan August 16, 1860 in New London, PEI. He was born Unknown, and died Bet. 1871 - 1881 in PEI.

Notes for Margaret Jane MacLeod:

Date of birth is approximate based on date of first marriage.

French River and Park Corner History, etc.

Margarets mother is noted as a Nancy Burke, however no documentation to support this fact has been uncovered.

Margaret is mentioned in her father Hugh MacLeods will of January 21, 1866.

Geddie Memorial Church

Notes in the register include a list of Margaret and Joseph Palmer's children. Included was mention of two half-sisters, Christy Ann MacMillan (Mrs Archibald Delaney) and Louise MacMillan (Mrs Ristine, Nova Scotia). We are told that Christy Ann MacMillan's father was John MacMillan (from the French River & Park Corner History). There was no mention of her mother.

The Ancestors and Descendants of George Eden Meggison

Michael's book indicates Christy's mother is 'Annie' MacLeod. No source reference is noted for this information. Could Margaret Jane have gone by the nickname of 'Annie'?

Evidence supports the fact that Margaret married a second time to John MacMillan:

1) PEI Archives Marriage Register Book #7 1856-1863 pg. 411:

John 'McMullen', Bachelor, and Margaret McLeod, 'Spinster', married 16 Aug 1860 by License J. Herbert Read Rector of St. Eleanor's. Witnesses Wm. Murphy and Ida McLeod.

2) St. Mary's Indian River Parish Records:

Baptism for 'Christina Ann McMullin' found in records. She was born approx. Jan 1861. Parents were John McMullin and Margaret McLeod.

3) PEI Archives:

Baptism record was located for a Louisa Cundall McMillan born 19 Dec 1866. Father is John McMillan and mother Margaret.

Beverley Berney received information that Margaret MacLeod may also have had a child out of wedlock, namely a Gordon MacLeod, born 1848, and that the father may have been a MacKenzie from French River. There is no proof, just anecdotal at this time. This Gordon MacLeod is said to have had a half brother named Joe Palmer. This is questionable at this time. Gordon died in 1929.

Death Records at PEI Vital Statistics may yield the names of Gordons parents.

This need further investigation - see also Geddie Memorial Cemetery transcript - Stone #224.

Margarets daughter Eliza Jane stated in the 1891 census that her mother was born in Nova Scotia. Possibly Margarets father, Col. Hugh MacLeod was in Halifax, Nova Scotia with the British Army at the time of her birth. Could Nancy Burke also be from Nova Scotia?

No further information has been found on Margaret. She has not been located in any census records under her various surnames (MacLeod/Palmer/McMillan) and no cemetery record/tombstone has been found.

July 2004

I have received from Wilbur Lamont some Family Group Records which appear to have been completed by Carol Hull and reviewed by Jean Howatt. Also included was some correspondence from Carol Hull dated 2 March 1878 and 12 November 1988.

Margaret's name has been noted as 'Margaret Jane'

Notes for Capt. Joseph Palmer:

Date of birth is approximate based on date of marriage.

Information on the family of Joseph Palmer and Margaret MacLeod is from old notes in Geddie Memorial Church, New London, PEI and additional information supplied by Wilbur Lamont (July 2004).

According to some MacLeod researchers, Joseph Palmer was a sea captain from Nova Scotia and he may have shipped between Halifax, Nova Scotia and Southhampton, England. No evidence has been found to substantiate this information.

There also does not appear to be any connection to other Palmer families on PEI.

There is conflicting information about places of birth for several children. Some may have been born in Nova Scotia and some in PEI. All appear to have been baptized in PEI.

According to St. Mary's Indian River Parish Records, Joseph Palmer was deceased before 24 Jan 1861 (see notes for daughter Susanna). Burial location is unknown. Did he die at sea?

Marriage Notes for Margaret MacLeod and Joseph Palmer:

PEI Archives R.G. 19 Vital Statistics, Series 3 Marriage Records, Subseries 2 Marriage License Books, Vol. 2 1831-1843:

Joseph Palmer, Bachelor, New London, Margaret MacLeod Spinster, New London,

License 29 Jan. 1839. James Campbell Esq. J.P.

Also: Marriage Book 1832-1840 pg. 368:

Joseph Palmer, B, 'Elizabeth' MacLeod, S, married 12 Feb. 1839 by license

Witnesses John MacLeod, Benjamin McKenzie, Thomas Pillman. James Campbell J.P.

Appears Margaret's given name was incorrectly entered in marriage book.

Notes for John McMillan:

John McMillan is reported to be a blacksmith in French River in 1864 PEI Directory. He is still listed as a blacksmith in the 1871 Directory. By 1890, Archibald Delaney (his son-in-law) is listed as the blacksmith. He has not been located in the 1881 Census, so he has presumably died by this time.

More About John McMillan:

Occupation: Blacksmith

Marriage Notes for Margaret MacLeod and John McMillan:

PEI Archives Marriage Register Book #7 1856-1863 pg. 411:

John 'McMullen', Bachelor, and Margaret McLeod, 'Spinster', married 16 Aug 1860 by License.

J. Herbert Read, Rector of St. Eleanor's. Witnesses Wm. Murphy and Ida McLeod.

Presumably, this is our Margaret, but it is odd that she would be recorded as spinster.

An LDS search also has a marriage record for Margaret McLeod and John McMillan, married in New London, PEI, Aug 16,1860 (Record is from Patron Sheets submitted to LDS, author unknown).

Children of Margaret MacLeod and Joseph Palmer are:

278 i. Hugh5 Palmer, born Aft. 1839 in Nova Scotia or PEI?; died Bef. December 09, 1933.

Notes for Hugh Palmer:

No further information has been located on this Hugh Palmer.

279 ii. Mary Palmer, born Aft. 1839 in Halifax, Nova Scotia or PEI?; died Bef. December 09, 1933 in probably USA. She married Capt Daniel MacLeod February 26, 1863 in New London, PEI; born Abt. 1835 in PEI; died Aft. 1898 in probably USA.

Notes for Mary Palmer:

According to old notes taken at Geddie Memorial Church, Mary Palmer married a Capt Dan MacLeod and lived in Cleveland.

Notes for Capt Daniel MacLeod:

For a detailed account of Capt Dan MacLeod's career, see www.linkstothepast.com for Ship Captain Biographies taken from the book 'History of the Great Lakes, Vol. 2' by J.B. Mansfield, published in Chicago: J.H. Beers & Co. 1899.

In the article, it states that Capt Dan McLeod was born in PEI in 1835 (no parentage mentioned) and he was married in 1863 to Miss Mary Palmer, of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and has one daughter, Olive Genevieve. Daniel was still alive at the time the article was written in 1898 and he had been stationed the past 3 years in Cleveland, Ohio.

It is uncertain who Daniel's parents were, but he could possibly be connected to New London MacLeods.

280 iii. Susanna Palmer, born February 28, 1841 in New London, PEI; died Bef. December 09, 1933. She married Michael MacMillan Aft. January 24, 1861 in PEI; born Unknown; died Unknown.

Notes for Susanna Palmer:

Susanna is a real mystery woman as you can see from the following information.

Baptism found at PEI Archives in New London Parish Register, pg. 38.

St Mary's RC Parish Records has the following on Susan Palmer:

'On the 24 Jan 1861 I received the abjuration of and absolved from heresy Susan Palmer daughter of the late Joseph Palmer and Margaret MacLeod and baptized her conditionally'

James MacDonald

It appears from this statement that Susan must have been baptized a second time, this time into the Roman Catholic faith. Possibly as a prerequisite for marriage to a Roman Catholic?

A later baptism entry in St. Mary's parish records, 12 Dec 1868 for Margaret MacMillan, suggests that Susan may have married a Michael MacMillan.

However - to add to the mystery................

1881Census for Lot 20 shows a Susanna Palmer age 40 living with an Arthur family. She is unmarried. Her birthplace is indicated as Nova Scotia, she is Presbyterian and of English origin. Our Susanna?

Age and place of birth would appear to be for our Susanna as a brother Joseph and sister Eliza Jane also list themselves as having been born in Nova Scotia, but why would she be listed as a Palmer if she married a MacMillan?

In the 1901 Census for Lot 21, there is a a Susan Palmer age 55, living with the Duncan/Daniel McKenzie family as a domestic. She is single, age 55 with a date of birth of Feb 28, 1845/46?, born in PEI. Again a different person?

More About Susanna Palmer:

Baptism: May 10, 1841, New London Parish Register, page 38.

281 iv. John Edward Palmer, born January 25, 1844 in PEI; died March 8, 1929, probably Saugus, Essex Co, Massachusetts. He married Lavina Etta Williams June 26, 1873 in Saugus, Essex, Massachusetts; born September 11, 1852 in probably Provincetown, Barnstable Co, Massachusetts; died November 04, 1924 in probably Saugus, Essex Co, Massachusetts.

Notes for John Edward Palmer:

Information at the LDS submitted by member of LDS church has John Edward Palmer, date of birth 25 Jan 1844, christened 24 Mar 1844, New London, Queens, PEI and date of death of 8 Mar 1929. Parents are Joseph Palmer & Margaret McLeod. Same source has a marriage to Lavina E Williams on 26 Jun 1873 in Saugus, Essex, Massachusetts.

1880 US Census Saugus, Essex Co, Massachusetts

John E Palmer (35), born in New Brunswick is residing with Eletta (26), Pertoma (8), Patina (4), Edith (1) and Alice A Williams (50) a widow. With the exception of John, all others are born in Massachusetts. It is presumed that this is our John Palmer even noting the discrepancy in place of birth. A number of Palmers did settle in Massachusetts.

July 2004

I have received from Wilbur Lamont some Family Group Records which appears to have been completed by Carol Hull and reviewed by Jean Howatt. Also included was some correspondence from Carol Hull dated 2 March 1878 and 12 November 1988.

John's wife is noted to be 'Etta'. This would appear to validate the LDS and census information.

More About John Edward Palmer:

Baptism: March 24, 1844, PEI Archives New London Parish Register page 46

More About Lavina Etta Williams

Name is probably Lavinia. This record is probably for the same person (submitted by member of LDS Church - source unknown)

LAVINIA ETTA WILLIAMS

Birth: 11 SEP 1852 Provincetown, Barnstable, Massachusetts

Father: SAMUEL DAVIS WILLIAMS

Mother: ELIZA ANN (could be interpreted as Alice A on 1880 census record).

282 v. Eliza Jane Palmer, born April 19, 1849 in French River, PEI; died 1932 in Freetown, PEI. She married Charles Bernard February 02, 1871 in PEI; born May 15, 1846 in Long River, PEI; died 1921 in Freetown, PEI.

Notes for Eliza Jane Palmer:

Eliza Jane's place of birth is in question.

1881 Census Lot 20, PEI - Jane Palmer indicates she was born in Nova Scotia, Presbyterian and of Scottish descent.

Dave Hunter has Eliza Jane Palmer born in French River, PEI.

1891 Census Lot 20, PEI - Eliza Jane's mother was both born in Nova Scotia and her father was born in PEI.

Notes for Joseph William Palmer:

Tombstone inscription in Geddie Memorial Cemetery indicates Joseph died at age 83. This would place date of birth c1850.

1881 Census Lot 21, Queens Co, PEI

Joseph (30) is residing with Eliza J (21) and their children Mary A (1) and Maggy age 1mth. Joseph indicates he is a fisherman, of Dutch origin and born in Nova Scotia. Eliza is Irish and born in PEI. Both children were born in PEI.

1891 Census for Lot 21 does not exist.

1901 Census Lot 21, Queens Co, PEI

Joseph states he is a farm labourer, born in PEI, of Scotch origin and Presbyterian.

Age given in 1881 census would put date of birth about 1850 (which agrees with tombstone), but year given in 1901 census is c1853.

Neither PEI nor Massachusetts Vital Statistics has a death record for Joseph Palmer.

Joseph & Eliza Jane lost 3 children within the space of one year.

July 2004

PEI Archives - Summerside Journal, December 25, 1933 - Pge 4

Joseph passed away at the PEI Hospital on Saturday, December 9th at age 82.
