The Descendants of James Bardin Palmer and Millicent Jones

First Generation

1. James Bardin Palmer, the younger son of Joseph Palmer and Susanna Bardin of Dublin, was born about 1771 in Ireland and died on 3 Mar 1833 in Charlottetown, PEI at about 62 years of age. He was admitted to the Irish Chancery in 1791 and practiced in Dublin and London before traveling to PEI in 1802 as the land agent of Reverend Raphael Walsh of Dublin. During his life, he was a land agent and proprietor, lawyer, and holder of several government offices. He was a skilled lawyer and the leading lawyer in the colony from 1813 to 1833.

James married Millicent Jones of London, England on 22 Dec 1803. They married in Charlottetown, PEI. Millicent was born about 1782, and died about 1839 in PEI. She would have been around 57 years of age.

All of the children were born in PEI. Children from this marriage were:

Second Generation (Children)

2. Benjamin Palmer, born in 1804 in PEI.

3. Henry Palmer, born in 1805 in PEI.

4. Edward Palmer was born on 1 Sep 1809 in Charlottetown, PEI and died on 3 Nov 1889 in Charlottetown, PEI at age 80.

Edward was initially educated at Alexander Brown's Grammar School in Charlottetown, PEI. He later trained in his father�s law firm. Edward is said to have been a tall, slim man, described even as gaunt. He married Isabella Phoebe Tremain in Quebec on 22 Sep 1846. They had 9 children, one of whom, (Herbert) also became a Premier of PEI in 1911. Edward Palmer was a politician, judge, Attorney General, Chief Justice, Leader of the Conservatives, Leader of the Opposition, and was Premier of PEI briefly during the mid-1800s. He represented Charlottetown in the Legislature continuously from 1835 � 1870. He and George Coles, Leader of the Reformers, were bitter interlocutors in the House. In 1885, the two men fought a duel, the precise cause of which is now unknown. Neither man was injured. In 1872, Edward crossed the floor to join the Liberals as the result of his opposition, at the time, to PEI joining Confederation.

One of the children from the marriage of Edward and Isabella is:

+ 14 M i. Herbert James Palmer was born on 26 Aug 1851 in Charlottetown, PEI and died on 29 Dec 1932 in Charlottetown, PEI at age 81. Herbert married Ada Millicent.

5. Olivia Palmer was born in 1811 in PEI.

6. Frederick Palmer was born in 1812 in PEI.

7. Anna Louisa Palmer was born in 1813 in PEI and died in 1866 in PEI at age 53.

8. Millicent Palmer was born about 1813 in Tyron, PEI and died on 5 Jun 1872 about age 59. Millicent married Stephen Wright, son of Nathanial Wright and Ann Lord, on 3 Oct 1839. Stephen was born in 1801 in Tyron, and died on 27 Apr 1883 in Bedeque, PEI at age 82.

9. James Bardin Palmer was born in 1816 in PEI. James married Annie Marie Marshall. Annie was born around 1820 in England and died in 1877 in PEI at about 57 years of age. James was a farmer in DeSable, PEI, presiding over "Ozendyke" which continues to exist at the intersection of the Trans-Canada Highway and Argyle Shore Road, but is not now recognisable as the Palmer home due to renovations. James Bardin Palmer and his family attended Church of England services at St. John the Evangelist Church in Crapaud, or in a small family chapel on their property.

+ 21 F vii. Lucy B Palmer was born in Feb 1865 in Ozendyke, de Sable.

+ 22 F viii. Amelia Palmer was born about 1868 in Ozendyke, de Sable.

+ 23 F ix. Aggie S Palmer was born about 1873 in Ozendyke, de Sable.

10. Donald Palmer was born in 1817 in PEI.

11. Sarah Palmer was born in 1818 in PEI.

12. George Palmer was born in 1820 in PEI.

13. Charles Palmer was born in 1823 in PEI. Charles was a lawyer, and was Attorney General of PEI until 1872. He was succeeded in the post by his brother Edward.

Third Generation (Grandchildren)

14. Herbert James Palmer (Edward 2, James Bardin 1) was born on 26 Aug 1851 in Charlottetown, PEI and died there on 29 Dec 1932 at 81 years old. He worked as a lawyer in Charlottetown from about 1875 until 1932. He was elected Premier of PEI in 1911 and was a Member of the Legislature from 1900 to 1911. Herbert married Ada Millicent.

A child from this marriage was:

+ 24 M i. Harold Leonard Palmer, born about 1880 in Charlottetown.

15. Lilly Palmer (James Bardin 2, James Bardin 1) was born between 30 May 1854 and 30 May 1855 in Ozendyke, DeSable, and died in 1943 at about 89 years of age. She worked as a homemaker and mother after her marriage and resided at "Birchwood", Hampton, PEI until her death. Birchwood exists today and is renamed "Redcliffe Downs". Lilly married William Henry Inman in 1877 in PEI. William was born abt 1860 and died before Lilly.

+ 25 F i. Ethel Inman was born about 1877 in Hampton.

+ 26 F ii. Annie Inman was born between 1877 and 1883 in Hampton.

+ 27 F iii. Mary Inman was born in 1882 in Hampton.

+ 29 M v. Arthur Inman was born in Jun 1886.

+ 30 M vi. Leith Inman was born in Hampton in 1891.

16. Hedley Palmer (James Bardin 2, James Bardin 1) was born about 1857 in Ozendyke, de Sable, PEI. He farmed at Ozendyke. In March 1884, he was in Georgia, USA, but the reason for his travel is no known.

17. Ida A Palmer (James Bardin 2, James Bardin 1) was born about 1857 in Ozendyke, de Sable.

18. Edith Palmer (James Bardin 2, James Bardin 1) was born about 1861 in Ozendyke, de Sable.

Alice Maud "Mary" Palmer (James Bardin 2, James Bardin 1) was born on 1 Dec 1862 in Ozendyke, de Sable, PEI, and died on 15 Apr 1950 in Vancouver, BC at age 87. She was buried on 17 Apr 1950 in Vancouver, BC. Alice married Henry Hammond Pope Howard, son of James Howard and Charlotte (probably Charlotte Mutch) on 9 Nov 1892. The wedding took place at St. John the Evangelist Church in Crapaud. Henry was born on 25 Mar 1865 in Cornwall, PEI and died on 19 Aug 1927 in Vancouver, BC at age 62. Henry was a farmer in PEI prior to moving his family to Vancouver in 1913, where he was a salesman.

+ 37 M vii. Hedley Vicars Howard was born on 2 May 1905.

20. Sarah Palmer (James Bardin 2, James Bardin 1) was born about 1864 in Ozendyke, de Sable, PEI.

21. Lucy B Palmer (James Bardin 2, James Bardin 1) was born in Feb 1865 in Ozendyke, de Sable, PEI and died in 1944 at age 79. She attended Teachers' College at Prince of Whales College, and worked as teacher in 1884 in Bonshaw. She boarded with the Cyru family in Bonshaw three miles from Ozendyke while she taught there. She also taught from 1887 to 1890 in Mapleque. There is some evidence that a young man named Pope Howard was very interested in knowing Lucy. But, Pope went on to marry someone else, and Lucy married George Leslie Haslam on 3 Jan 1894. George was born about 1860. After her marriage, she resided at "Hazeldean", a home built for her by George before their marriage. She lived there until 1994.

The Haslams had five children one of whom ws Reginald:

+ 38 M i. Reginald Heber Haslam was born on 22 Sep 1900 in Springfield, PEI and died on 17 May 1971 in Summerside, PEI at age 70. Reginald married Doris Priscilla Muncey (b. 20 Jul 1905, d. 7 May 2000) on 22 Sep 1945 in Centerville, Bedque, PEI.

22. Amelia Palmer (James Bardin 2, James Bardin 1) was born about 1868 in Ozendyke, de Sable, PEI. She worked as a teacher in 1887 in Kensington.

23. Aggie S Palmer (James Bardin 2, James Bardin 1) was born about 1873 in Ozendyke, de Sable, PEI.

Fourth Generation (Great-Grandchildren)

24. Harold Leonard Palmer (Herbert James 3, Edward 2, James Bardin 1) was born about 1880 in Charlottetown, PEI and died about 1951 in Charlottetown, PEI about age 71. Harold married Dorothy Campbell Simpson, daughter of James Simpson and Alice Maude Susan Desbrisay, about 1902. Dorothy was born about 1882 in Charlottetown, PEI and died about 1944 in Charlottetown, PEI about age 62.

25. Ethel Inman (Lilly Palmer 3, James Bardin 2, James Bardin 1) was born between 1874 in Hampton, Queens, PEI and died in 1954 about age 80.

26. Annie Inman (Lilly Palmer 3, James Bardin 2, James Bardin 1) was born between 1877 and 1883 in Hampton, Queens, PEI. Annie married William Sawyer.

27. Mary Inman (Lilly Palmer 3, James Bardin 2, James Bardin 1) was born in 1882 in Hampton, Queens, PEI and died in 1975 at age 93.

28. Elise Inman (Lilly Palmer 3, James Bardin 2, James Bardin 1) was born in Mar 1885 in Hampton, Queens, PEI and died in 1932 at age 47.

29. Arthur Inman (Lilly Palmer 3, James Bardin 2, James Bardin 1) was born in Jun 1886 and died in 1972 at age 86. Arthur married Sadie Monkley.

30. Leith Inman (Lilly Palmer 3, James Bardin 2, James Bardin 1) was born in 1891 and died in 1973 at age 82.

31. Edith Louise Howard (Alice Maud Mary Palmer 3, James Bardin 2, James Bardin1) was born on 22 Sep 1893. Edith married Rev. William Huston in 1925. William was born about 1895 and died about 1985 about age 90. Edith and William had 3 children one of whom was

32. James Russell Howard (Alice Maud Mary Palmer 3, James Bardin 2, James Bardin1) was born on 12 May 1895.

33. Adèle Josephine Howard (Alice Maud Mary Palmer 3, James Bardin 2, James Bardin 1) was born on 1 Nov 1896 and died about 1989 in Vancouver, BC about age 93. She worked as a teacher in Vancouver, BC.

34. Ida Marjorie Howard (Alice Maud Mary Palmer 3, James Bardin 2, James Bardin 1) was born on 25 Oct 1898 and died about 1960 in Vancouver, BC about age 62.

35. Henry Brooks Howard (Alice Maud Mary Palmer 3, James Bardin 2, James Bardin1) was born on 4 Sep 1900 in Little York, PEI, died on 24 Dec 1991 in Victoria, BC at age 91, and was buried in Victoria, BC. He worked as a teacher, a stock broker in the 1930s, and as a salesman 1940s - 1966. He sold life insurance for Sun life of Canada in Vancouver, Regina, and Victoria from the 1940s until his retirement in 1966. Henry said he was selling Everwear pots and pans in 1917 in Vancouver when, on returning home one day, he found his sister Jo entertaining her friend, Christina, whom Henry met that day. Henry said he knew the first time that he met her that he would eventually marry her, and, eventually, she became his wife.

Henry married Christina Margaret Graham, daughter of James McIntosh Graham and Mary Ann Weir, on 28 Dec 1923 in Vancouver, BC. Christina was born on 13 Oct 1899 in Morden, MB, died on 9 Feb 1999 in Victoria, BC at age 99. Before she was married, Christina worked as a teacher from 1917 to 1923. She was the first white teacher in Tofino, and taught in Courtney, Vancouver, and Salmon Arm prior to her marriage. She received her Certificate of Canadian Citizenship on 2 October 1975. Although born in Canada, as there was no record of her birth when she applied for her pensions, it was necessary for her to prove Canadian (as opposed to American) citizenship. However, as it turns out, there is a record of her birth in Morden, Manitoba.

Christina and Henry had five children, all still living in 2005.

36. William Chester Howard (Alice Maud Mary Palmer 3, James Bardin 2, James Bardin 1) was born on 13 Feb 1903.

37. Hedley Vicars Howard (Alice Maud Mary Palmer 3, James Bardin 2, James Bardin1) was born on 2 May 1905.

38. Reginald Heber Haslam (Lucy B Palmer 3, James Bardin 2, James Bardin 1) was born on 22 Sep 1900 in Springfield, PEI, and died on 17 May 1971 in Summerside, PEI at age 70. Reginald married Doris Priscilla Muncey on 22 Sep 1945 in Centerville, Bedque, PEI. Doris was born on 20 Jul 1905 in Centry Bedeque, PEI and died at MacMillan Lodge in Charlottetown on 7 May 2000 at age 94.
