The PEIMHF began in 1970 with a mandate to preserve and protect the Island's human, built and natural heritage. As the Provincial Museum System, it administers seven sites across the Island with offices located on the third floor of Beaconsfield Historic House, 2 Kent St. Charlottetown PEI. Beaconsfield is open to the public for tours year round and houses a bookstore on site.

The other six sites that fall under the PEI Museum mandate are; Basin Head Fisheries Museum, Elmira Railway Museum, Orwell Corner Historic Village, The Acadian Museum, Green Park Shipbuilding Musuem & Yeo House and Eptek Art & Culture Centre.

PEIMHF does stock many Community Histories at the Beaconsfield Bookstore. These are not being listed here, as often supplies of these books cannot be replentished on a reliable basis.
