Discovering the History of Rustico
A bilingual conference on the history and heritage of Rustico will be held on Saturday, May 4th. Organized by the Sister Antoinette DesRoches Historical Committee, in conjunction with the Friends of the Farmers' Bank of Rustico, this conference will bring to light several aspects of the past of one of the Island's oldest communities. In fact, most Rustico Acadians can trace their genealogy to the founding families, the Gallants, Martins and Pitres, who settled the area around 1760.
Six lectures and three guided tours are included in this one-day conference. In the morning, Georges Arsenault will talk about the origins of Rustico and Robert Pichette, of Moncton, will give a presentation on the French Emperor Napoeon III and his generous donations to Rustico in the 1860s. The other morning speakers include Edward Blanchard who will explain how the well-known Farmers' Bank of Rustico operated, while Theresa Gallant will discuss the challenging task of tracing Rustico genealogies.
The conference will continue after lunch with a presentation by Francis Blanchard on Mgr. Bernard D. MacDonald, the builder of the St. Augustine 1838 church, while Carter Jeffrey and Arnold Smith will give an illustrated talk on the Doucet house, believed to be one of the oldest buildings in the area.
After the presentations, guided tours of the St. Augustine church, Barachois Inn and the Farmers' Bank Museum will be offered by Reg Porter who will comment on the architecture of those historical buildings.
This bilingual conference is open to the public. Registration will be held at 8:30 a.m. in the Farmers' Bank Museum. The registration fee, which includes lunch, is $10 per person. Please register before Wednesday, May 1st, by contacting : Judy MacDonald (963-2194), Edward Blanchard (963-2304), Musée acadien (432-2880), or Georges Arsenault (566-5067).
