The Descendants of Archibald Shaw and Catherine Bell
I owe many thanks to the family and the friends that I have met along the way and they are listed at the end of this document along with my resources. Special "thanks" go out to my father Neil Harrison Shaw for entrusting this project to me and giving me his family heirlooms (bibles and pictures) and, to Anne MacCannell Chapman and Reid Villett who kindly provided a lot of additional and valuable information that helped to further fill in our tree!

Generation 1
Archibald Shaw married Catherine Bell. We believe they emigrated from their beloved Scotland in 1819 aboard the Ship Economy alongside the McNeills/McMillans/Bells/Shaws (and most likely others), though no passenger list has been found. This ship may have first stopped in Pictou, NS and then voyaged to Canoe Cove, PEI though many stories say it landed first in PEI and only five people stayed aboard and landed in Pictou. No wedding or death information has been found to date for either Archie Shaw or Catherine Bell. We believe them to be buried either in St. Catherines or Argyle Shore Cemetery. It is as well quite possible they are buried in the New Dominion Cemetary. Their parents above are most likely buried either in townships in Argyll mentioned above or perhaps in Colonsay.
Notes: Quotes "within" names signify either the name they used or a nick-name. Archie and Catherine had issue: The first five children born to this couple were baptized in Colonsay, Argyll Scotland (Parochial Records Colonsay, Argyll SCT. Fische#1041079 family history centre 539/2-1).
1. John born 1806? baptized August 2, 1807 alongside his twin (2.)
2. Donald, twin to John above, baptized same day, same place
3. Neil born 1809 baptized July 2, 1810
4. Marion born 1814 baptized February 5, 1815
5. Margaret born 1817 baptized Feb 8, 1818
6. Barbara Annie born June 30, 1823 in Lot 30, Bonshaw PËI.
Generation 2
1. John Shaw baptized in 1807 Colonsay, Argyll Scotland is believed to be born 1806 married Margaret Isabella Matheson, January 5, 1842 in Rustico. Margaret born circa 1814 died in Bonshaw on January 8, 1885. Margaret maybe the daughter of Murdock Matheson and Catherine MacKenzie. Margarets death notice reads, "At Bonshaw, Jan 6th, 1885 after a lingering illness of three years, Margaret Matheson, wife of John Shaw, aged 78 years, leaving a husband and two daughters, thirteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren." From this notice we know that John was still alive in 1885. No graves have been located but we believe that Margaret and John were most likely buried in Bonshaw Cemetery beside their child, Margaret. John and Margaret had issue: 3 females
1.1 Catherine Kitty Shaw born March 14, 1844 (1901 census) in Bonshaw married Allen Rogerson of Crapaud on March 26, 1862. Catherine died 1920 and Allen died 1918. They are buried in the MacArthur Cemetery, Churchill, PE. Allan was the son of John Rogerson and his wife Mary Ann Allan. He was born October 1835 in Dumfries, Scotland. They had issue: 3 males and 8 females.
1.2 Margaret Shaw born 1848 in Bonshaw married Allens brother, Thomas Rogerson, on Jan 3, 1866 by Rev. Thomas Duncan. Witnesses were James Blue and Margaret Shaw registered Mar 15, 1866 by C. Irving, surrogate. Reference Heritage foundation PEI. Thomas was born October 1840 Scotland, died August 17, 1892. Margaret died sometime before 1879. She may be buried in Bonshaw or Argyle Shore Cemetery, no grave has been found. They had issue. 1 male and 2 females.
1.3 Mary Shaw born about 1851 in Bonshaw. Never married. She died after the 1901 census where she is listed as a seamstress. No issue.
2. Donald Shaw baptized in 1807 believed born in 1806 is a twin to John (1) and is believed to have died sometime after the families arrival on PEI (1819) and before the first census taken in 1841. A red sand stone has his name carved in it and sits in the Argyle Shore Cemetery. The cemetery records do not indicate where he was buried and unfortunately by times the stone seems to move - so the family is unaware of Donalds exact burial location or if in fact that he is buried there, its possible he could have died aboard ship and/or upon landing in Canoe Cove. Its possible someone within the last 50 years carved the stone..Donald is our mystery.
No issue
3. Neil Shaw baptized 1810 in Colonsay, Argyll Scotland was born in 1809 (according to his grave) married Mary McNeill born June, 13, 1831 West River, PEI on March 25, 1852. Marriage Record Book #5, 1852-1857 pg 21 PEI Archives. By license Robert McNair. Witnesses are Lachlin Currie & Neil McNeill. The bondsman was her father Neil McNeill and the surrogate was C. Irving. Neil died July 15, 1889 buried in Argyle Shore cemetery along wife Mary who died December 26, 1907. Their stone sits Lot 30, Cemetery 2, and Stone 105.
Marys father was Neil McNeil born 1798, Colonsay, Sct died Jan 5, 1875 New Dominion, PE. Marys mother was Mary "May" McNeill born September 22, 1807 died Nov 2, 1889 same cemetery. Marys grandparents on her fathers side would Neill McNeill born 1774 Colonsay and Peggy Currie born 1778 same place both died PEI believe buried ND. Marys grandparents on her mothers side would be Alexander McNeill and Margaret McPhee. Most likely buried in New Dominion.
Marys siblings include: Sarah born 1841, died Oct 19, 1898 married her first cousin Donald McNeill 1835, Margaret Sarah born 1835-37, Flora born 1829, Donald born 1850 married Elizabeth Barrett, Neil born June 1838, Malcom married Lucy MacDonald on March 11 1858, Duncan born May 1832, Hector born 1846 died Aug 13, 1876 and Alexander born 1847 died Oct 18, 1870. Hector & Alexander are buried in New Dominion Cemetery.
Records on McNeill family can be found in Parochial Register for Colonsay. (For more information on this McNeill family email this submitter).
Neil and Mary had issue, 5 males and 2 females.
3.1 Archibald Frank Shaw born Desable 1852 married wife #1, Margaret Pricilla Newsom on May 14 1874. Margaret born in Crapaud, March 17, 1851. ML Book #12 1871-1851 pg 34. Bondsman was William Irving and the wedding took place her fathers home. She is the daughter of James Newsom and Ann Warren. Her grandparents were Samuel Newsom (wife Mary) and Joseph Warren of North River. She died not quite three months after being married on August 1, 1874. Buried in Westmoreland Baptist Cemetery. No issue
Wife #2 Archie married Francis "Frankie" Theale of St. John New Brunswick on August 23, 1877 at St. Marks Church (of England) in St. John, NB. She is the daughter of William Young Theale, MD of same area. She had five sisters and a brother. Records from New Brunswick archives and census records. They had issue, one male baptised in Cornwall United Church.
Archie and Francis are believed to have traveled extensively between New Brunswick, PEI and Montreal. He was an accountant, a store clerk for Mr. Howatt and eventual owner of his own store in Crapaud around the 1870s. He was a founding member of the Loyal Orange Lodge #1368 formed in 1875 in Crapaud. Later, Archibald sold insurance. It is believed they died in Montreal.
3.2 Neil Shaw born February 5, 1855 in Desable and died August 26, 1937. Neil married wife#1 Rachel McKinnon born April 12, 1850, of Desable on December 28, 1876. ML Book 1871-1881 page 143 directed by Rev. W.P. Archibald. Rachels parents were Archibald McKinnon and Mary McKenzie. She died, from what is referred to in newspaper as heart attack but sounds more like an Aneurism, on October 30, 1901 while fetching a bucket of water from the neighbors well. They had issue, four sons.
Wife#2 Neil married Margaret McPhail February 25, 1903. ML Book 1871-1881. Bondsman was Archibald McNeill. Margarets parents were big Malcom McPhail and Flora McPhail (first cousins). She was born June 22, 1867 in Desable and died November 19, 1937. They had issue, two more sons.
Margarets siblings include her twin, Alex, Colin - never married, Harry married Flora MacGillvary, John who married Mary MacDougall, Flora married John MacDonald (& had the two boys Emerson and Gordon, Mary married Paul McPhee and Christy Ann who married Archibald Alexander McNeil "Archie" - a first cousin to Neil, Sophia McPhail, 3rd wife of Dr. John Murchison of Bonshaw, Catherine McPhail, wife of Mack McPhail of Desable and later York Point and John McPhail, known as "Johnny Black Malcom" McPhail.
Neil is believed to have not only been a farmer but to as well played a role in the construction of the main road from Charlottetown to their community. He along with his two wives is buried in Argyle Shore Cemetery. The stone simply reads for Rachel, "Faithful unto death", For Neil, "Gone but not forgotten", and for Margaret, "At rest. "
Six males were born into this family.
3.3 Kate Shaw born 1857 in Desable. She married husband #1, Neil McKinnon of Desable on July 12, 1876 but Neil died just two years later on August 18, 1878 and Kate returned home to Desable. It is believed now that Katie may have had issue with Neil giving birth to Mary Myrtle McKinnon born 1877. See obit below. Witnesses to marriage were Neil Shaw & Rachel McKinnon. Neil Shaw was the bondsman. Ceremony was performed by Rev. MacLeod. ML Book #12, 1871-1881 pg 13. They had issue: one female.
Kate married husband #2 Charles Wesley Beer of Desable of June 23, 1885 but Kate died giving birth to their daughter on August 19, 1887. They had issue: One female.
Notes for McKinnons: Neil is buried in Tryon cemetery along with his siblings and near his parents. Neils parents were Archibald McKinnon and Mary McKenzie. Neils siblings are:
a/Isabella McKinnon born and dying in 1800 circa marries James William Villett born 1854 dies 1928. She was the first of Jim Villetts three wives. She died at childbirth. They had no surviving children. She (we assume) was buried in the Crapaud Peoples Cemetery although there is no headstone for her. Jim was the younger brother of George Villett who marries our Katie Mae Beer (Shaw see 3.3a).
b/Sarah "Rachel" McKinnon marries our Neil Shaw (see 3.2)
c/Flora Jane McKinnon married Joseph McDonald of Crapaud (McDonald road). Joseph McDonald was not related to Neil MacDonald of Hampton. Flora and Joseph had three children, Russell, Frank and Mary (Mrs. Gordon MacDonald). Son Frank McDonald remained on the homestead and he married yet another MacDonald, Margaret Gray McDonald. They had four children, Jean "Buddie" (Mrs. Ralph Myers), Annalea Lord (Mrs. Arnold Taylor), Norman and Margaret Gray.
Flora Jane and Joseph are buried in the Crapaud Peoples Cemetery.
d/Annie McKinnon was with Rachel on the day she died records from Obit otherwise no info known on Annie at this time.
e/Neil McKinnon marries our Kate Shaw above.
Kate is buried in Brae United Cemetery, Brae. PE where strangely enough her gravestone says, "wife of the late Neil McKinnon", as if she had not remarried. It maybe that the Shaws raise Kates second daughter, Katie Mae Beer, as seen in Census records and perhaps the McKinnons raised her first daughter, Mary Myrtle.
Obituary: Mary Myrtle McKinnon 1877-1911
McKINNON At Crapaud, May 15th, at the residence of her uncle, Joseph McDonald, Mary Myrtle McKinnon, daughter of Neil McKinnon of DeSable in the 34th year of her age. Funeral (Tuesday) at 3 p.m. to the Crapaud Cemetery.

George born 1830 Lot 29, died April 29, 1887, lot 9 Milo. George and Annie were married in 1855. Georges parents, Charles grandparents were John Beer born about 1800 and Elizabeth Paddison (married approx 1820). Charles father George would be a brother to Phillip Beer who married Annie McDougall thus making Charles and Maggie (marries Chester Shaw) cousins marrying into Shaw family.

3.4 Malcom Shaw born 1856, according to his gravestone, in Desable PEI and died September 29, 1922 in Gonic, NH. Since I had Malcom born 1859 based on census records, rather than renumber his and his sister above I have left him as fourth child born to this couple but he is really the third child. Malcom immigrated to the USA in 1895 with Louisa and siblings following in early 1900s.
He married wife#1 Eliza A Beer of Desable on February 17, 1882. Eliza is a sister to Charles Beer (above). Eliza died April 30, 1893 buried in Brae United Church Cemetery. Malcolm Shaws Obituary from source Reid Villett year 1922.
FORMER ISLANDER KILLED
-A sad fatality occurred at Gonic, N.H. on Wednesday morning Oct 4th, when Mr. Malcolm Shaw, a resident of that place, was killed by a railway train. Mr. Shaw who was a middle-aged man, was born at DeSable P.E. Island and was twice married, first to Miss. Eliza Beer of Coleman, P.E.I., who left a family of five-Herbert, Bayfield and Pearl of Gonic; John in Western Canada and Nettie in P.E. Island. His second marriage was to Miss Louise Moreshead of West Devon, P.E.I., who, with one son, Roy, survives him. Two brothers, Mr. John Shaw, residing in East Boston, and Mr. Neil Shaw, are also left to mourn. Burial was in Rochester on last Sunday afternoon.
NOTE: Another source, Commander Dan, of Rochester mentioned he died in Sept on the 29th day this article suggests it was October 4, 1922 ?
Malcom, his wife and sons, Herbert and Roy are buried between the rows of North East Path and Rose in the back section. This cemetery is located off of Franklin Street, in Rochester, New Hampshire..
3.5 John Shaw born July 15, 1862 in Desable was married in 1888 to Jeannette Ida Johnson born 1865, Tignish, PEI. John immigrated to Suffolk County, Boston Mass. between 1879 -1887 according to US Census records which are confusing at best. In 1900 it says he emigrated at the age of 16. The census records indicate he was born in June of 1863 and not in July 1862. If John emigrated in 1879 he was 16, if he emigrated in 1884 he was 22.
John was assist. Superintendent, then foreman of the local sugar refinery and was retired by 1930 census. John died on June 11, 1937. Cause is listed as diabetic coma, duration 2 days, contributing factor arterioclerosis duration 2 years. He was buried in Woodlawn, Everett Mass. on June 13, 1937. His physician was E.L. Boother, undertaker F. E. Brown. Boston Death notice, Vol 16, pg 283.

marriage of Alexander Shaw and Susan E. BradshawSince Alexander was the youngest son to Neil and Mary Shaw and since he is born in 1867 it seems that the Census takers may have erred in the dates in which Alexander emigrated to USA. Census suggests Alex emigrated in 1877 and 1886. His brother John emigrates between 1879-1884 and therefore it is not impossible that Alex followed him to states as young child and/or he followed soon after John was settled.
No children known to be born to Alex and Susan or Alex and Florence however Alex would have raised two Bradshaw children.
4. Marion Shaw baptised in Colonsay Scotland 1815. Marion married a James Shaw. James dies before the 1861 cenus where Marion shows up as a widow. We believe this James to be the son of Malcolm Shaw and Margaret Murphy (Covehead, PEI. James grandparents on his fathers side would be Neil Shaw b. 1781, Covehead, PEI, m. 1810, Catherine (Kitty) Lawson, b. 1792, (daughter of James Lawson and Elizabeth Millar) d. 1859. Neil died 15 Jun 1859, Covehead, PEI.
Notes for James: His siblings a/ Malcolm Shaw d. Aft 1860. Living in Boston, MA b/ James Shaw d. Bef 1859. Lost at sea before the death of his father in 1859 c/ Robert Shaw d. Bef 1872, d/ David Shaw, e/ Elizabeth Shaw b. 1815, f/ Margaret Shaw b. 1817, d. 20 Aug 1849, Covehead, PEI, g/ William Shaw b. 1827, h/ Catherine (Kitty).Catherine died 1860 i/ Ellen Lucy Shaw b. 1833, j/Janet Shaw b. 1836, d. 11 Sep 1861. Never married, k/ Mary Shaw. Mary died Bef 1860.
Sources as well in PEI Archives Land records database show James Shaw, Captain Cumberland, lot 65 56 acres, June 2, 1846 Lease #178 and later shows transfer of same lease (deed) on Jan 21, 1873 to Gilbert (presumably a close relative, is this Gilbert Shaw or Bell?) of 80 acres and 20 acres to Donald McNeill which we assume is Marion #4, sister Margaret Shaws son, Donald. I question is Gilbert and Donald are somehow cousins or even nephews? Since Marion is widowed before 1861 census and James goes missing at sea in 1859 we assume we have the correct James Shaw listed and that after his death, Marion could not attend the farm herself and thus sold it.
We find in archives as well, Neil Bell lot 65 easing land May 10, 1821 he sells his lease on Mar 22, 1878 Lease #205 to Duncan Bell 81 Acresis Duncan Bell aka Gilbert Bell? Are they brothers or cousins? Or same personto whom Marion Shaw sells 80 acres to as well some 5 years earlier.

The Blockhouse Point Lighthouse is located on the west side of the entrance to Charlottetown Harbour. The coastal Lighthouse was built in 1876 and overlooks the Northumberland Strait and Charlottetown Harbour on the south shore of Prince Edward Island. This historic area was the site of large Mi'kmaq gatherings each summer and later on was the French Port La Joie and the British Fort Amherst. It was an important aid to the ongoing development of Charlottetown Harbour.
The Lighthouse is 12.8 m (42ft) in height from base to vane and is 17 m (56 ft) above high water level. The original structure at this location was built in 1851 and was simply a lantern mounted on a warehouse roof. It served as an outer harbour light. Citizens of the area presented a petition to the House of Assembly requesting that a lighthouse be built at the entrance to Charlottetown Harbour. Several days after the petition was presented, the sum of 10 was allotted to the building of a lighthouse. There was very little upkeep done to the 1851 light and by 1875, the structure was so deteriorated that only minor repairs were done as a new lighthouse was to be constructed.
The current Blockhouse Point Lighthouse is a considerable structure, the tower being broad and short and the two-storey flat-roofed dwelling being larger than most. The wooden, tapered Lighthouse is square in design with a shingled exterior. The flared cornices on the tower and dwelling and the pedimented tower windows were installed between 1890 and 1914. The cornices were originally bracketed and the windows were similar to the windows presently on the dwelling. The dwelling consists of a kitchen, a parlor and two bedrooms on the ground floor and four more bedrooms and a bathroom on the upper floor. The inside of the tower is lined with what was been described as 'tongue-and-groove wallboarding.' The tower is topped with an octagonal lantern. The light for a number of years has been a dioptric 4th order lens with a mercury vapour light source. Its flash pattern is: Flash 3 sec. Eclipse 1 sec.
The Blockhouse Point Lighthouse has seen several changes over the years. A porch that ran down the dwelling's south elevation was removed as well as the dwelling's roof balustrade and an attached shed. Other than these few changes, little restoration was been done to the Lighthouse.
The Blockhouse Point Lighthouse has seen several keepers. A.S. McNeil was 1st light keeper of the Blockhouse Point Lighthouse. Nelson Currie was the next light keeper. He started on May 6th, 1912 and it is assumed that he remained as light keeper until 1936. William Stanley Taylor became keeper of the lights from October 15th, 1936 until February 3rd, 1963. He then took on the role of caretaker of the Lighthouse until January 1st, 1967. The Lighthouse became automated on July 25th, 1962.
It was leased to Merrill Taylor until 2000 at which time the Coast Guard also discontinued the private leases to the New London Rear Range.
The Blockhouse Point Lighthouse has twice escaped planned replacement, first in 1963-64 and again in 1969-70. It was offered to Northern Affairs and Natural Resources in connection with Fort Amherst N.H.P in 1962.
To locate the Blockhouse Point Lighthouse, turn right off TransCanada Route 1 at Cornwall onto Route 19 Blue Heron Drive and follow it around past Rocky Point. Turn off towards Fort Amherst/Port La Joye National Historic Site and follow the road right to the end. You will end up in the lighthouse yard.

6 Annabelle McDougall was raised by Chester and Maggie as one of their own since she was an infant. She was always considered a sister to Lillie and Bertie, the only children of this couple who survived past childhood. Referred to by the children as Aunt Belle as were Chesters and Maggies own daughter's, Annabelle was very much a part of this family! It is believed that Annabelle would have been related to Maggie by way of her mother being a McDougall. Perhaps Annabelle is her mothers brothers child? Further research is needed in this area. Family is unsure whose child she really was but great memories of her, Lillie and Bertie are told from Jean Millar. Jean would be the daughter of Evelyn Shaw (Chester's and Ediths daughter) who married Stewart MacFarlane.
The family story as told by Jean is that Maggies (Edith) parents, Phillip Beer and Annie McDougall went to visit a house in Argyle Shore where there were many young children. After there arrival back home, the got to talking and wondered how this family would feed another young newborn infant. This infant was Annabelle. They returned to visit and offered to take care of the new baby as if she was their own child. This is how she came to live with Beer family but always continued to be raised in the McDougall name. It is possible that if this child were the daugther of Annie's brother, that his wife could have died leaving him with too many children to attend. We search for Annabells parents, her birth and exact death date.
Jean has very fond memories of Annabelle and visiting her in the states with her mother. Annabelle was a well-liked and smart woman. Annabelle moved to Providence Rhode Island and worked for some time, in a factory setting, before taking up housekeeping for the Teel family. The Teels, liking Annabel so much, continually left her items in there wills. This family had 3 female daughters, Dorcas Teel, Mary Teel and another Teel that Jean just can not recall by name. All the family including the daughters died before Annabel whom was left the house and all its contents.
Annabelle is proudly buried in the TEEL family plot in Providence, Rhode Island. Many times she has wanted to come home to PEI, to her family, but she as well had found another family and was given all the privileges of being a member of this family including a burial in their family plot.
Annabel is buried in the North burial grounds, Section 16, Lot 1956, corner of Main and Vine. Plot is small stone in the south corner. Maggie and her mother, as well for some time, worked in Rhode Island but returned to PEI. Phillip Beer died quite young and his daughters and their mother worked the farm before leaving for the states. Annabelles friend, Bessie Briggs, was apparently born in the states and visited PEI with Annabelle and Laura McFarlane. Laura was born in PEI and sometime later moved to Rhode Island where she opened the first, of a large hairdressing chain; others following in Florida and California.
Chester Shaw and Edith Beer had issue: 1 male, and 1 female.
3.2D John "Jack" Alexander Shaw was born July 7, 1886 in Desable according to 1901 census records. His Attestation papers from the Army say he was born July 1, 1888. He died September 1964 in California at the age of 78. He died in Long Beach, California and we are on a hunt for his grave. Source: LDS website US SS Index. He never married. He appears in one PEI census as a John "S" Shaw. He is in the PEI Census of 1901 @14 yrs and has emigrated before the next PEI Census in 1911. John preferred to use the name Jack.
From information supplied by family member Jean Millar, Jack joined the Canadian Army while in California, and he sent many letters home to his brother Chester. (this author is not in possession of these letters and so we presume they are held within the MacFarlane family home).
Jacks papers say he joined in 1917. Jean says one letter states that, "he is sorry he could not meet Aunt Annie (referring to Belle) while in Quebec on Army duty". It is told that Chester and a few relatives went to Halifax to meet Jack and it is there that they had pictures taken. (we believe the one picture we have of Chester, Neil (his son) and Jack (his brother) is this picture that Jean Millar speaks of and of course we are interested in gathering more family treasures.)
Jack was a boxer in the army and supposedly a Heavy Weight Boxing Champion though no source had confirmed that family tale.
3.2E Myron LeRoy Shaw born March 24, 1905 in Desable and baptized on October 15, 1905. He married Doreen Thacker on October 16, 1939. Doreen was the eldest of six children and was born in Lowesoft England on March 14, 1914. She was baptized in PEI on June 8, 1927 at the age of fourteen. Her parents were Archibald Thacker, Rushmere England, and Alice Cooper, Lowesoft England, who were farmers in Breadalbane. Doreen died on April 1, 1997. Myron died December 27, 1989. Records in PEI Archives baptisms Acc#3095, 1894-1921 and Acc#3162/a pg 20-21.

She will be buried in the same cemetery with Malcom. Records, PEI Archives cemetery transcripts and newspaper clipping. They had issue: 1 male and 1 female
3.3 Kate Shaw married husband #1, Neil McKinnon and, Husband #2 Charles Wesley Beer. She has issue with perhaps her first and second husband.
3.3A Mary Myrtle McKinnon 1877 1911
3.3B Katie Mae (Beer) Shaw was born August 7, 1887 in Lot 9, Brae. Her story is interesting, if only in the fact that she was raised by the Shaws and, though rightful to claim the name of Beer, she chose to marry as a Shaw. Katie married George "Edgar" Villet on July 18, 1909 in Inyo County, California. She had followed George to California 2 years after his emigration. George is born in Crapaud, PEI on August 31, 1881. He is the son of George Argus Villet and Catherine Ferguson. Reid Villett, descendant is skeptical about "argus or even Angus" being middle name as found in PEI card index files as this family was not from Scotland. George died in Sacremento, California on August 22, 1972 where he is buried with his 2cnd wife Florinda Dias Corey. Katie herself had died, just like her mother, giving birth to a daughter, her second daughter. She is buried in Bishop, California in the East Line Cemetery and died on January 4, 1911 just before her 24th birthday. The story of her 2cnd daughter is worse in nature as she was supposedly murdered in Mexico. Source: Mary Lou Molina. Katie and George had issue, 2 females.
Katie and George had issue: 2 females Alice and Jenny Mae
Katie Beer/Shaws Obituary 1911
Mrs. Edgar Villett
Clipped from a paper published at Bishop, Calif.
When the visitation of death takes away the young wife and mother, leaving little ones deprived of that most loving care, it seems to touch the sympathies more deeply than under any other circumstances. Strangers as well as friends are moved by it as by nothing else. Such is the case of Mrs. Edgar Villett, who died at the home of her friend, Mrs. C.M. Dixon shortly before noon Tuesday January 4th. Her sadly bereft husband is left with the care of two babes, one about fifteen months, the other but a few weeks old. Though the family are strangers to many of our readers, there are many who in this dark hour will most deeply feel with him. Mrs. Villett was a cousin of W.H. Collett of Bishop.
Mrs. Villett and her husband came here from Prince Edward Island in April 1909. During the employment of her husband at Mammoth and elsewhere as occasion required, she has made her home with Mrs. C.M. Dixon, who has been to her more than a friend. In the final illness she has had this devoted care, as well as the most assiduous attention of physician, husband and others, but it seems that nothing was humanly possible to stay the hand of death.
Tomorrow, at the Odd Fellows Cemetery, will be laid to rest the mortal part of this lady taken away at so untimely an age but twenty three years.
The pallbearers were all Prince Edward Island boys, viz. Wm Smith, Isaac Smith, John McIntosh, Roy McIntosh, John Bulpitt and Fred Bulpitt.
The late Mrs. Villett was an adopted daughter of Neil Shaw, DeSable, who was her uncle.
Notes: The pallbearers were all Prince Edward Island boys from around Crapaud, Hampton and Victoria. The Smith boys, William and Isaac, would have been descendants (great grandson and grandson) of Christopher Smith (1782-1857) and Deborah Foster who used to live by the Crapaud Peoples Cemetery. It was one of their California descendants Bill Smith who put together the Smith family tree, The Descendants of ChristopherSmith and Deborah Foster.
George Villett remarried Florinda Diaz/Dias some sources say Dias Carmichel perhaps she was married twice? born in Nevada on November 20, 1884. She died in Sacramento on May 21, 1963 at the age of 79 in the Hill Haven Nursing Home. Edgar and Florinda had issue: one daughter named Vivian Villett born June 29, 1917 East Auburn, CA died November 2,1987, San Franciso, CA. Florindas parents were Anthony Diaz and Mary Hendricks.

Roy was a veteran of WW1 and in known to be listed as the Commander of the American Legion during a burial for Anthony Cilley who died April 9,1927, a well-known Civil War veteran, answered the last roll call at his home on Spring Street early Saturday morning April 9,1927 following a long illness due to old age. The end came peacefully to the last of the Civil War Veterans in East Rochester. He was born in Plymouth, N.H., the son of Andrew and Charlotte (Leeds) Cilley, he came here in 1905 to live, purchasing a home on Spring Street. Severe injuries received in his term of service in the Civil War preventing his doing very much work. He enlisted in Company D, 7th N.H. Regt., and in an engagement in Lester, Fla., he received an ugly bullet wound in the forearm. At Morris Island, S.C., he was blown up with an ammunition wagon and when he struck the ground, in some manner he received a bayonet thrust. A comrade took him off the field and he was given medical attention. Had it not been for this comrade, he would have lost his life. For a number of years he endeavored to learn who this comrade was and finally learned that it was the late John McLaughlin of South Lebanon section. He was a good soldier, brave and fearless and received an honorable discharge. Mr. Cilley was an excellent citizen and neighbor, quiet and unassuming in disposition and never would wrong a person or say anything against him. In spite of his infirmities, he was always ready to aid the sick and distressed in every possible manner. He held membership in Bell Post, G.A.R., of Manchester and is survived by his widow, two sons, Police Officer Irvin H. Cilley and James Cilley, World War Veteran, also two daughters, Miss Mattie Cilley and Mrs. Frank Ames. The funeral services were held at the home Tuesday afternoon and full military honors were given by Rochester Post, No. 7, American Legion, of Rochester, Roy Shaw, Commander.

Maclaughlan, Donald Shaw (Charlottetown, P.E.I., 1876 - New York, 1938)

1902

Original Etching
Publisher:
Gazette des Beaux Arts, Paris
Note:
Donald Shaw MacLaughlan: Regarded as one of America's finest etchers of the early twentieth century, Donald Shaw MacLaughlan was in fact a Canadian. He was born and raised on a farm in Prince Edward Island, moving with his family to Boston in 1890. To complicate matters of nationality even further, most of Maclaughlan's outstanding works of art were created when he lived and worked first in France and later in Italy. MacLaughlan first studied art in Boston under J. W. O. Hamilton. By 1898, however, he had settled in Paris to complete his education at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts.
Within a very short period of time MacLaughlan had established himself as a major international etcher. In 1901 two of his etchings were accepted by the prestigious Salon de la Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts and in 1903 he was elected an Associate of the Salon. Etchings created during this period, such as, Ruelle du Pecheur, proved a major influence to artists of all nationalities. MacLaughlan even instructed other expatriate Canadian artists then living in Paris, most notably Clarence Gagnon and Frank and Caroline Armington. From 1905 to 1914, he lived and worked at Asolo near Venice, Italy.
In 1929 James Laver wrote on MacLaughlan's art: "His is probably the most considerable single achievement of any son of the British Dominions Overseas. It is only the completeness of his technical apparatus which makes his range as an etcher possible. Every process of etching technique, every stage in the production of the finished work, is treated by him almost as part of a religious rite. ... Most modern etchers know how to print, very many of them do their own printing, but few perhaps bestow upon the process the care and labour expended by MacLaughlan. Not content with the mere printing, he always grinds and prepares his ink himself, rightly claiming that some plates need a stiffer ink than others, that sometimes the appropriate tint is warmer, sometimes colder, and that it is only the etcher himself who can properly decide." * These comments help to explain why Ruelle du Pecheur, like so many other MacLaughlan architectural studies and landscape views, is a masterwork of the art of etching. * (James Laver, A History of British and American Etching, London, Ernest Benn Limited, 1929, pp. 120 & 121)
Gazette des Beaux Arts: The revival of etching as a prominent form of art first took place in France in the mid nineteenth century. Sparked by the Paris etchings of Charles Meryon, French artists elevated etching to a creative process of art as vital as painting or sculpture. Such an outburst of artistic energy in this field had not been seen since the days of Rembrandt and other seventeenth century Dutch master etchers.
At the vanguard of this wave was the Paris based Gazette des Beaux Arts. Beginning with its initial publication in 1859, the Gazette regularly commissioned the greatest etchers of the day to supply original graphic art for publication. Nineteenth century editions included original etchings by Daubigny, Goya, Meryon, Whistler, Seymour Haden, Max Liebermann, Albert Besnard and others. And from the beginning of the twentieth century until it ceased publication in 1930, such fine international artists as John Sloan and Donald Shaw MacLaughlan contributed works of art. With artists such as these it's easy to understand why etchings from the Gazette have long been sought after.

Annies parents were Allan Livingstone and Jannet MacDonald of Nine Mile Creek. Her brothers obituary from the Patriot May 13,1901says, he was killed by a falling boulder in a mining camp in Coloradothe sensational story got quite a headline in the Patriot but the obituary lists the surviving family: Donald at Silverton Colorado; Allan (my great grandfather) on the homestead; David, in this city; Hugh and Alexander, in East Boston; John, in Worcester and one sister, Mrs A. S. McNeill at the Block House. Annies mother must die and Allan remarried to a Margaret Adelaide MacNeill. Her Father was Donald MacNeill married to Catherine MacNeill. Dougalds parents were Dougald and Flora McMillan. There is a research paper about the families emigration from Colonsay on the Register by John W. Sheets. At one point, he states more than the passengers on the Spencer were related somehowno wonder I have a hard time straightening this group out.

3.2A8 Donald "Daniel" Alec Shaw born September 14, 1920 and baptized October 19, 1920 in Tryon as Donald Alec Shaw. Daniel married Margaret Mahoney.
Source:Reid Villett lists a Donald Shaw who died in infancy whom I dont list above. This is interesting for two reasons: Family sources find in the Argyle Shore Cemetery a stone simply carved Donald Shaw who we think is our first generation Donald baptized 1807 but perhaps not? And oddly enough that our USA family say that Daniel Alec always used the name Donald that they can recall however, no baptism records have been found for a Donald Shaw, but rather only Daniel Alec in Tryon Baptismal records. And of course the other reason being that I found two Neils born to this family, assuring the first Neil died in infancy.

3.2A10 Helen Grace Shaw born in Peabody Massachusetts. She married Myron "Buddy" Williams.

"Suffer little children to come unto me and forbid them not for such is the kingdom of heaven."
3.2B2 Helen Shaw.we have one family picture with Minnie and writing on back saying Minnie and Helen Shaw. We seek to find Helens birth information and guess she was born in Rhode Island though I have yet to locate this family since death of Marion Rachel above. Its quite possible they moved to another state.
3.2C Chester Shaw married Maggie Edith Beer and had issue
3.2C 1 Evelyn Rachel Shaw born May 2, 1906 in Desable married Stewart McFarlane. Died March 2000 and is buried in the Peoples Cemetery in Charlottetown.

She is the daughter of Captain Edwin MacWilliams, Cape Traverse PEI and he is one of the first Ice Boat Captains, her mother was Edith J. Stanley. Inez received her middle name because her mother liked their Doctor A Doctor Bovyer. No family connection to this family name.
Victor died November 15, 1999 and Inez January 28, 2003. They are buried together in the Crapaud Peoples Cemetery. Of note, Inez divorced Victor and remarried Len Cosgrove born Ontario. Inez separated from Len and died a few years later. Len returned to Ontario before Inez death. This was as well Lens second marriage and he has children in Ontario.
3.3A Katie Mae Beer married George "Edgar" Villett and had issue:
3.3A1 Alice Ruby Villett was born in Bishop, California on October 22, 1909. When her mother, Katie Mae Beer (Shaw) died in 1911 giving birth to Jenny May, Edgar Villett took Alice, the older of the two children, home to the Island to be cared for by Edgars parents. As it turned out, Alice became attached to her grandparents and so she chose to remain on the Island and was brought up by her grandparents. By this time Edgars parents, George and Catherine Villett, had moved from their farm in Hampton and had retired to Victoria village, P.E.I.
Alice attended school in Victoria. When she came of age she moved to Winnipeg. Alice went to Winnipeg with her aunt Winnifred Villett (Edgars sister) who was only a few years older than Alice. In Winnipeg Alice married Thomas Walker Pickersgill on May 31, 1931. Alice and Tom lived in Winnipeg for their entire working lives. She lived out her retirement years near her son in Black Diamond and Claresholm, Alberta. She died in a nursing home in Calgary, Alberta on May 13, 2003 at the age of 93. Her ashes were buried with her husband in the Elmwood Cemetery in Winnipeg.
Thomas Pickersgill was born on July 3, 1910 in Winnipeg. He died on October 18, 1980 in Claresholm, Alberta. He was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery back in Winnipeg.
They had issue: One female, one male
3.3A2 Jenny May Villett born 1911 in Bishop California.
Jenny May Villett, was left in Bishop in the care of Charles Mackieson "Mac" Dixon and his wife Florence MacKinnon who eventually adopted her. Mac and Florence were fellow travellers from P.E.I. In fact, Florence McKinnon was a sister of Dougald MacKinnon of DeSable and an aunt of Capt Dan and Wilfred Ferguson of Hampton. In 1920 Jennys adoptive mother, Florence (MacKinnon) died in California. Her adoptive father, Mac Dixon, then married her sister, Alice MacKinnon. Jenny and her new adoptive mother didnt get along and so Jenny left and went back with her father. Mac Dixon may have belonged to the Dixon family in the Clyde River area? He was not of the Dixon family of Desable, lot 29, so perhaps of lot 30?
The end result of this tragedy was that the two sisters, Alice and Jenny, never met each other not even in adulthood. They were separated as infants when their mother died. Alice was brought home to P.E.I. and, as mentioned above, and raised by her Villett grandparents. Her sister Jenny remained in California and was raised by her adoptive parents. In the midst of all this Jenny decided to use the name Jeane instead of Jenny. Jenny married; however, the name of her husband is unknown. It is believed that Jenny and her husband were murdered, presumable in Mexico, on their way to South America. They simply disappeared without a trace. This was somewhere around the early 1950s.

3.3A1 Alice Villett married Thomas Walker Pickersgill and had issue we only have information on daughter and not the three sons.
3.3A1A Frances Corriene Pickersgill, b. March 3, 1932, Winnipeg, Man. She died in New York State on June 17, 1965. As a young woman while attending a wedding in Idaho she happened to pass through Boise, Idaho. She liked the place so much that she returned to Boise and got a job there. She was a nurse. While in Boise she met her husband to be, Edward "Eddie" Wells Gooding. He was from Watertown New York State. Watertown is on the New York State side of Lake Ontario across from Kingston, Ontario. Frances and Eddie were married on September 16, 1955 in Boise, Idaho. They settled in Watertown, NY and had four children. One male and three females.
In 1965 tragedy struck the family. Frances died from a brain hemorrhage at the age of 33. About a year later Eddie died from cancer. The four children having lost both of their natural parents were all under ten years of age. As might be expected life became very difficult for the children (Alices grandchildren). For a time Alice and Tom took the two older children, Edward and Tenna, for a year or two. The other two children were taken by Eddies parents who were living in Florida. When the grandparents could no longer look after the children they were placed in the Masonic Home (orphanage). Despite their difficult childhood years the four children managed to regroup and remain together as a family.
Although Alice had many friends in Claresholm she spent the last few years alone as far as family was concerned. In the end it was Anna (her sons widow) and these grandchildren who kept in touch with Alice during her final years in Claresholm and took care of Alices funeral arrangements. What a remarkable life story she had. Born in California, raised in P.E.I., lived most of her adult life in Winnipeg, retired to Claresholm, Alberta and died in Calgary.
