It is my hope that by placing a separate BELL tree on the Register that someone will take more notice and help me to uncover what happened to this family. Please direct Queries and requests for source information to the email link above!

The Descendants of Archibald and Mary Bell

It is not known if this family came to the Island, remained in Scotland or moved elsewhere.

1. Archibald Bell (mcIIvoile?) married Mary Bell (mcIIvoile?) (circa 1730-40) married on Jan 21, 1769 In Inveraray and Glenaray, and had issue:

i. Isabel Bell born February 22, 1769, baptized February 24, 1769

ii. Duncan Bell born November 10, 1770, baptized November 11, 1770

iii. Dougald Bell born April 19, 1776, baptized April 21, 1776.

Notes for Dougald: He may have married a Catherine unknown - possibly McPhee? And had a son Neil born 1814 died 1897 lot 65...this info is not confirmed and is merely a guess at this point.

iv. Donald Bell born July 20, 1778, baptized

Notes for Donald: May have married a Catherine McMillan lived on lot 62 but this is not confirmed and merely a guess at this point and, I have some doubts because of the lot number, however I have found many family spread across PEI in the earlier years..

v. Catherine Bell baptized January 13, 1780, married Archibald Shaw bapt Sept 15, 1774, In South Knapdale. His parents are John Shaw and Mary McNeill. Believed to have come to PEI in 1819 with their family - all this couples children were born in Colonsay beginning in 1806.
Notes: (for more on this tree see Shaw family file on the Island Register)

vi. Agnes Bell born March 21, 1781, baptized March 22, 1781

FHC Film source#1041009 Inverary & Glenary Marriage Banns and Baptisms.

Notes: I am told that the Bells of Inveraray and Glenaray belonged to the Clan MacMillan (Mac illmhaol) the most common derivation was McIIvoile. Apparently between 1750-60 all the McIIvoiles became Bells. This may explain why there are no Bells much earlier than 1740. I may not find these parents born as Bells and guesstimate births to be around 1735.
