Capt. Sebastian Cabot

P.E.I.

Still much controversy over Cabot's discovery. Said by some to have been really the discovery of his father, John Cabot. Others say the discovery was not P.E.I. On a 1544 map, Cabot names "St. John", as it was discovered on John the Baptist's Day. Ref: Warburton, "History of Prince Edward Island", pgs.2-5.

Quebec

Fort Amherst, P.E.I.

The New-London Summary or the Weekly Advertiser (Connecticut) - 1759 Sept 7 page 4: [a farily long story provided for full context, basically, an unnamed schooner landed at Fort Amherst, Island of St. Johns, shortly after the 10th of May, 1756 or 1759 (it's impossible to tell the year from reading the article as one could read the dates as being in the current year when the article was written or the year following his imprisonment)]
In a former Paper we gave an Account of Capt. Stobo's Escape from Quebec, and his Arrival at Cape Breton, the following is the Account he gives: " October 26, 1754. Arrived Quebec, from that Time to the 25th of June 1755, was allowed the liberty of the Town, and of going out into the Country on asking leave, but a Paragraph of a News Paper from London; dated January, 1755, mentioning a Letter I had wrote from Quesne to the Commander at Wills's Creek, (giving Information on the State of the Place) appearing, I was put in prison, and the Letter itself being afterwards taken with General Braddock's Baggage, I was tried by a Court Martial for my Life, and having been ever since in close Confinement, only on Account of its long duration being reduced to such a bad State of Health, that my Life was dispar'd of. I was moved from the common Goal to the House of an Inhabitant, from whence I made my Escape on the first of May, in Company of Lieut. Stevens of Rogers's Rangers, and three private Men, by carrying off a Birch Canoe, with some Arms and Provisions, which we had secretly provided. Coming down the River St. Lawrence, at Isle Verte, we boarded a shallop loaded with Wheat, having four Men on board. On board of her we continued our Voyage until the ninth of May; we fell in with 13 Sail of ships just above the Isle of Bicque, going up the River, who we had reason to think were French; next Morning, the 10th, we fell in with another Ship, opposite St. Barnabas, who fired on us under French Colours, be we got clear, and continued our Course until we came to the Bay of Cheleur, where we found a Schooner and a Sloop; we boarded the Schooner and took her, she had six Men on board, then fell along side the Sloop and took-her, she had five Men, we put six Men on Shore, and brought the rest with the Schooner to Fort Amherst, on St. John's Island, having first burnt the Sloop. [...continues but just gives some observations about the Militia of the Country, nothing further on the voyage...] [Brian Molyneaux]

The passengers of the Queen speak handsomely of the kind treatment they received from Capt. Morrison. His conduct is worthy of being followed by all masters of vessels and Humanity should dictate a similar treatment.
It is with singular pleasure we announce the arrival of those honest and worthy Caledonian emigrants, (whom we before mentioned to have embarked for this Island) in health and spirits, notwithstanding a very tedious passage of many weeks. There is not a doubt but they will receive a kind reception, and experience that hospitality which so characteristically and eminently distinguish the Highland race."

Sophia

Bristol, G. Britain

P.E.I.

Edinburgh Advertiser, 12 Oct 1808, page 5. A letter from Charlotte Town, Prince Edward's Island, of date August 25th, says -:- "The Sophia, brig from Bristol, arrived on the 16th inst. with a Mr. Norris, his family, and other settlers, in number, 23. They may prove a valuable acquisition. On the 21st, the Elizabeth, Milns, arrived from North Britain, with 76 settlers. These latter came without money or provisions, and it is said, will be followed by three ships more of the same description. It is melancholy to reflect that so many poor people should be so deceived, as they are taught to imagine that they are coming to a land flowing with milk and honey - and on their arrival cannot find a house to shelter them. But Highlanders are better calculated to meet such hardships than any other people. In a few days, they dissappear, and burrow like rabbits in the woods, or mix with their clans." [Brian Molyneaux]

Adamant

P.E.I.

Pictou

PAPEI RG 9 Collector of Customs Shipping Outwards 1810: "15 Nov., 1810 - "Adamant" of 217 tons Capt. Adam Hadley to Pictou -- See also The Times (London) 13 Sept 1811 page 3: MELANCHOLY ACCOUNT.- The Adamant, Hedley, of Newcastle, sailed on the 26th of July, 1810, from Oban, with 80 passengers, for Prince Edward's Island, where she arrived after a favorable passage of 49 days, and landed them safely. She took in a cargo of timber, and left the island on the 13th of October, the wind being W.N.W. turning to windward into the gut of Canso, where she cast anchor. On the 15th, weighed at 3 a.m. wind variable, and got to the mouth of the gut that night, when ?? came on to blow very hard from the N.E., with very foggy whether. On the 19th, the storm increasing, the vessel unfortunatly upset, and remained about twenty minutes with her masts in the water, when she righted as far as the lee-edge of the deck, her starboard gunwale remaining constantly under. The boats and other things on deck were swept away; the sea, being very high, had a free passage down the hatchways, and washed the provisions out of the cabin-windows. The crew, 13 in number, were all ?lashed, and had nothing to subsist on but a little raw beet (at which they were each allowed two ounces per day) and a small quantity of rum. The water-casks being all stove by the violent motion of the vessel, they were obliged to dring their own urine. By the 23d, four of the crew had miserably perished, and were thrown into the sea. On the 24th, they came within sight of land, which proved to be Sable Island, on the outer bar of which, on the north-side, the vessel struck about two p.m. that day; she lost her rudder, but did not go to pieces. Here they remained two days longer. On the 25th four more of the crew died. The people of the Island appeared with a boat on the 26th, which had been brought overland in a cart for their relief. They were conveyed to a house two miles from the shore, and received very proper treatment. Milk was the first thing given to them, and in a week they recovered their strenght. The four dead bodies left in the ship were brought ashore the next day, and were decently interred in one grave, and an inscription placed thereon. Those who died were John Tosh, William Smith, John Cutter, James Cowens, James Burrell, William Carmichael, D. Bell, Daniel Smith. The last four were buried ashore. Three of the surviors, viz. John Short, Thomas Chicken, and James Spence, arrived at Shields last week in the Fr?? Briton. They left the island the 2?d of June, after having lived there more than seven months. The other two, Mr. Thomas Ridley, the owner, and the Captain, put to sea from the island, in an open boat, a considerable time before them, and being taken up by some ship at sea, got home some time since. Sable Island was settled by the Governor of Halifax about ten or eleven years ago; but there were not more than eight persons living on it when the crew left it." [Brian Molyneaux]

While some Newfoundland sailings to P.E.I. are included here, we have information on many more sailings to P.E.I. from other Maritime Provinces, Newfoundland, and to and from Boston, as well as indexes to most RG-9 Customs House Records on our "Ships Page"! I have decided to keep the bulk of these separate to keep this database from getting cluttered by these sailings, and to keep this database primarily for International sailings! RG-9 listings on that page include Maritime, International, and Newfoundland sailings. Maritime Passenger lists on that page will also show the passengers we have come across so far for sailings within the Maritimes. All international sailings from the Customs House and newspaper records we have, have been included in this database.
