Parents of Rt. Rev., Msgr., Alfred Edward (A.E.) Burke, D.D., (1862-1926) a very well known parish priest on P.E.I. through his energetic work in the parishes he served and his prolific letter writing ability in letters to the editor of local newspapers. He later went on to be President of the Catholic Canadian Extension Society and to be Editor-in-Chief of the Catholic Register. Through his friendship with Prime Minister, Sir Robert Laird Borden, he served as a Chaplain and was given the rank of Major in the Canadian Army during World War I, serving overseas. In 1919 he traveled to Mexico on a fact-finding mission for the United States Catholic Extension Society. Father Burke spent his last years in Rome, Italy and was interred in the Camp Santo Cemetery at his passing.

Michel, Joseph (dit Laruine) 1728-1756

His is a typical story of the French era on Ile-Saint-Jean prior to the 1758 deportation. Joseph was born in l'Acadie and then was forced to flee to this Island ca. 1749 to escape the growing troubles on the mainland in present day Nova Scotia. He married here to a native of this Island and they settled in this rough area on land granted to them verbally by Monsieur de Bonnaventure. They cleared land but in all intents and purposes (according to the 1752 census) lived in poverty. In 1758 his wife, daughter, mother-in-law, his wife's step-father and his wife's three half-brothers were among those who were rounded up by Lord Rollo's men and they died in the sinking of either the Violet or the Duke William in a violent storm on Dec. 13, 1758 at the mouth of the English Channel. Joseph's father-in-law, Pierre (Darambourg) Du Rambour is also interred here.

This monument, established in 1982, is situated at the site of the first Roman catholic cemetery in Hope River and is sacred to the memory of the Irish, Scottish and Acadian pioneers who settled the countryside and planted the seeds of faith that continue to nourish their descendants.

An interesting and contentious priest who was embroiled in controversy in St. Mary's, Newfoundland. He was also a pioneer in Newfoundland agriculture. Later he had a stormy pastorate in Guysborough, Nova Scotia, prior to moving to Prince Edward Island in 1858. He was known here for instruction, church construction and advocacy of temperance.

Parents of Sir Andrew Macphail, Professor at McGill University and the author of The master's wife, and James Alexander Macphail, one time member of the Prince Edward Island Legislative Assembly.
James Alexander Macphail was unique in that he was a Member of the House and a non-resident, living in Kingston, Ontario. He was allowed to run by the laws of the day, due to his owning land in the Orwell area of Queens County. Macphail was a Professor of Engineering at Queens University.
Sir Andrew Macphail was interred in Montreal, Quebec and James Alexander Macphail in Kingston, Ontario at their passing.

Of Loyalist descent she married a shipbuilder who captained his own vessels, transporting Bedeque area farm produce to Miramachi, New Brunswick. While on one trip, they were trapped in the great Miramachi Fire in October 1825. They fled to the River and saved their lives by standing in it, immersing themselves and their two young children in the cold water all night long. Her husband George held the children above his head for the night, keeping damp blankets on their heads. About six weeks later she gave birth to her third child and then tragically died shortly afterwards from the effects of the night in the River and childbirth. George left the Island about 20 years later and is interred in Illinois.

Wightman's Point Pioneer Cemetery

The first burial at this cemetery was in 1799. It is also known as the St. Andrew's Point Burial Ground. There are five headstones and numerous red stone markers. Several of the Graham family markers were removed from here and taken to the Murray Harbour North Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Suckles (Sickles or Suckills), Dembo 1762-1845
Believed to be born in Western Africa, he came to this island as a slave of Capt. William Creed.
He gained his freedom in 1802 and married a woman who may also have been a slave and was in the home of Governor Fanning. Oral history states that he had a mark on his back to the end of his life where an iron hook dug in during his capture by a slave hunter.
