New Phone in Museum

N1317 phone given me Aug 12, 2009 by Charles Dingwell. The phone as received had been improperly converted by a former owner to a handset phone without a proper apparatus blank installed in the location of the former transmitter - instead it had been replaced with a wooden dowel in the hole. When doing this conversion, one must replace the switch hook with one designed for an F1 handset - this phone still had the original switch-hook designed for the hanging receiver. The handset, instead of proper cords, had two lengths of lamp wire run to it. The former desk had been removed from the phone. Other than this, the phone was in good shape - all parts operational, and the wood in good shape.

This conversion was common and sanctioned by Northern Electric when they came out with the N1315, but there was a proper way, and a wrong way to do it. The Northern Electric T8 catalogue on page 71 covered the correct procedure and NE's MD-2127 conversion kit designed for the purpose. The old transmitter and transmitter bracket was to be removed from the front of the phone and replaced with a proper apparatus blank. The Receiver and cord were to be likewise removed. The switch-hook fulcrum pin was to be removed and a correct handset fork was to be installed. These parts were ordered, and this is the end result, a proper N1317 with MD-2127 conversion completed August 29.

As of Noon, Friday, July 16, 2010, the Island Register is on a new server. The move went well, and hopefully the move was totally transparent to our users. See the notes at the bottom of the page for an update effecting all our Newsletter Subscribers!

Updated Subscriber Information!Receive Free Newsletter/Updates Weekly!

To subscribe, please use the request links below to receive the free weekly email notice and newsletter of the latest changes and updates on the Register, and news items from the Genealogical, Historical, and Heritage communities of Prince Edward Island, and other items of interest to all. Newsletters will be emailed each Friday. Email addresses of those subscribed are kept 100% confidential. I have been immensely pleased with the popularity of the Newsletter - over 2053 people have signed up, and many very positive emails have been received about its content.

IMPORTANT UPDATE! - With July 17's server move, it became necessary to require that all newsletter recipients confirm their subscription by clicking on a custom link in a subscription probe message. This needs to be done once only unless you request your address be changed. This change was first mentioned in the Jun 11, 2010 newsletter. These messages went out to all newsletter subscribers just after the week's newsletter left the old server and were entitled "Please confirm your subscription."

If you don't think you received this message, please check your spam or junk mail filder to see if it got routed there. If you do not confirm your subscriptions in a reasonable time, the new server will automatically remove you from the list, and you will not receive newsletters. This is for legal and anti-spam reasons, and to validate subscribed addresses. Addresses which bounce 5 times will automatically be removed. These confirmations must be in place prior to July 23, 1010, in order to receive your next newsletter. I apologize for this being necessary, but these are the rules of the server we are now on.

You will NOT be able to subscribe anyone else but yourself. If you wish to have someone else subscribe, let them know about the newsletter, forward them a sample newsletter, whatever, and then ask them to contact me themselves if they wish to be added to the list. They then will receive their own confirmation link.

This procedure is safe and information remains private and will NOT be shared with anyone. It is for purposes of Newsletter management only. If you received the confirmation message and deleted it without following the confirmation link, you must contact me and let me know, so that I can try to get the server to send out a new copy, problem being each link is specifically tailored for you. If you do not, you won't be getting future issues. If you have difficulty confirming your subscription, turn line-wrap off in your email program before clicking on the link given in the message. Then try it again.
